Fungi can help forest plants obtain nutrients and sustain soil processes, but the evidence does not support a simple story of a hidden web deliberately connecting trees or already reviving rainforests at scale. The headline’s ecologist is not identified by the available sources. A documented, relevant project at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is studying mycorrhizal fungi in Britain’s temperate rainforests and testing how fungal communities might inform restoration.
What the “invisible network” refers to
Mycorrhizas are relationships between plant roots and specialised soil fungi, rather than simply strands linking one tree to another. Kew describes these symbioses as occurring with most plant roots. The fungi are relevant to plant nutrient uptake and broader soil processes; the details vary among fungal groups and ecosystems. Kew’s overview of mycorrhizal ecology explains the relationship.

The popular phrase “wood wide web” can imply more than this evidence establishes. Fungi may form extensive associations with roots, but that does not by itself show purposeful communication between trees or routine sharing of resources from tree to tree. A more precise account asks which fungi and plants are involved, what ecological process was measured, and in which forest.
What Kew’s British rainforest project is investigating
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’s Mycorrhizas of the British Rainforest project focuses on ectomycorrhizal fungi in Britain’s temperate rainforest. It links these communities to questions about nutrient uptake, soil health, carbon cycling, and woodland resilience. The project is led by Prof Martin I. Bidartondo and Dr Laura M. Suz; researcher David Satori is mapping and characterising fungal diversity. These names identify the Kew team, not a confirmed identity for the ecologist implied by the headline.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The project’s aims include establishing a baseline map of fungal diversity, identifying priority species, investigating how diversity relates to ecological function, and developing guidance for woodland management. Its research plan also includes studying soil transfer and mycorrhizal inoculation as possible restoration methods. These are approaches under investigation, not demonstrated proof that either method has restored forests at scale.
What studies in other rainforests have found
Findings from Brazil and Sumatra show why fungal communities matter to restoration questions, but they should not be conflated with Kew’s British project. Each study concerns a different region, land-use history, and measured outcome.

| Forest system | Finding | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Brazilian Atlantic rainforest and adjacent sugarcane fields | A 2022 study sampled arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities along 200-m transects from native forest into sugarcane. It reported biotic homogenisation after conversion; sugarcane communities were not simply a subset of forest communities, and forest fungi appeared locally specialised with restricted geographic ranges. Pereira et al., Soil Biology and Biochemistry (2022). | A result from this study system about fungal community composition; not a universal result for every rainforest conversion. |
| Sumatran rainforest, rubber, and oil-palm plantations | A 2025 study reported declining richness of indicator plant taxa and plant–fungal associations as land use intensified. Root communities shifted from native and endemic rainforest taxa toward non-native, generalist herbaceous species in plantations. Journal of Ecology (2025). | Evidence about root–fungal associations across this regional land-use gradient; distinct from the British project and the Brazilian study. |
| Tropical rainforest lower canopy | A 2012 study examined aerial rhizomorph-forming fungi that trap falling leaf litter. The study authors reported litter capture of 257.3 kg ha−1. Experimental removal reduced arthropod abundance by 70.2 ± 4.1% and morphospecies richness by 57.4 ± 5.1%. Proceedings of the Royal Society B (2012). | Measurements of an aerial litter-trapping system and its effects on arthropods—not mycorrhizal nutrient sharing, tree-to-tree communication, or forest recovery. |
How fungi may help retain nutrients in wet forests
In a 2018 publication record, the U.S. Geological Survey summarises literature suggesting that mycorrhizal fungi in tropical rainforests may rapidly recycle nutrients from litter back to canopy trees, limiting leaching in high rainfall. This is a plausible ecological mechanism, not a quantified claim about its importance in every rainforest. The USGS record provides that qualified context.

Fungal diversity, nutrient cycling, tree health, plant–fungal associations, and arthropod abundance are different measures. Evidence that one changes does not automatically prove a forest has recovered overall. In particular, Kew’s project is investigating whether soil transfer or mycorrhizal inoculation could help restoration; the project page describes research objectives, not successful large-scale outcomes.

The strongest supported conclusion is that root-associated fungi are part of forest ecology and that land-use change can alter fungal communities and plant–fungal associations. Whether particular fungal interventions can accelerate rainforest recovery remains a question to test in the relevant forest, with outcomes measured directly.
