Unsaturated, oxygenated forest mineral soils remove atmospheric methane when aerobic methanotrophic bacteria diffuse methane into their pore spaces and use it for energy and carbon. The microbes oxidize most of the methane to carbon dioxide and water, incorporating a smaller share into biomass. That sink is conditional, however: waterlogging, flooding, compaction, drought stress, nitrogen inputs, warming and disturbance can reduce uptake or allow methane production to exceed oxidation.
What happens to methane in forest soil?
Methane (CH4) reaches forest soil from the atmosphere by moving through connected air-filled pores. In a well-drained mineral soil, oxygen can move through the same pore network. Aerobic methanotrophs consume the methane as both an energy and carbon source. Their metabolism converts methane primarily into carbon dioxide and water, while some carbon becomes microbial biomass.

This creates a net soil methane sink: more methane enters the microbes and is oxidized than is produced inside the soil and released to the air. The balance is not fixed. Methanogens, which are different microorganisms, generate methane in oxygen-poor environments. Forest-soil exchange therefore reflects two opposing processes—methanotrophic oxidation and methanogenic production—plus the physical movement of gases.
The organisms that consume methane
Aerobic methanotrophic bacteria are the principal biological consumers of atmospheric methane in oxic mineral soils. They are most effective where methane and oxygen can reach them. Their abundance and activity vary with moisture, temperature, pH, nutrients, soil carbon, vegetation and site history.

The organisms that produce methane
Methanogens thrive where oxygen is scarce, such as persistently saturated soil pores, waterlogged depressions or flooded organic layers. They produce methane that can diffuse upward or move through plants and water. If production and transport exceed oxidation, the forest soil becomes a methane source rather than a sink.
Why pore-space moisture is the immediate control
Gas transport usually determines whether methanotrophs can access atmospheric methane. Water-filled pore space slows diffusion far more than air-filled pore space. Bulk density and compaction also change the number and connectivity of air pathways. A loose, well-drained mineral soil generally offers methane and oxygen easier access to microbial surfaces than a compacted or saturated soil.
| Soil condition | Gas movement and biology | Likely methane exchange |
|---|---|---|
| Unsaturated, porous mineral soil | Oxygen and atmospheric methane diffuse through air-filled pores; methanotrophs are active. | Usually a methane sink. |
| Moderately moist soil | Water supports microbial activity, but excessive filling of pores begins to restrict gas diffusion. | Site-dependent; uptake can remain positive but often changes seasonally. |
| Compacted soil | Air-filled pore volume and connectivity decline, limiting methane and oxygen transport. | Weaker uptake; local production may become more important. |
| Persistently saturated or flooded soil | Oxygen diffusion is restricted and methanogenesis can proceed. | May emit methane. |
Drying illustrates why moisture effects cannot be reduced to “drier is always better.” If a previously wet soil drains, newly air-filled pores can increase methane diffusion and oxidation. Severe drought, however, can stress microbial communities and alter roots, carbon supply and soil structure. The direction and size of the response depend on the site, drought intensity and duration.
Other factors that set oxidation rates
Temperature
Temperature changes microbial reaction rates and the balance between methanotrophy and methanogenesis. Warming can accelerate biological activity, but it does not guarantee greater methane uptake: if warming dries a soil, increases saturation after heavy rain, or stimulates methane production in oxygen-poor microsites, the net response can differ.

pH, soil carbon and nutrients
Methanotroph communities have different chemical tolerances. Soil pH, available carbon and nutrient status influence which organisms are present and how active they are. These factors interact with moisture and diffusion rather than acting as independent switches.
Nitrogen inputs
Nitrogen deposition and fertilizer often inhibit methanotrophy in nitrogen-rich soils. Nitrogen-poor systems can respond differently, so a nitrogen addition cannot be assumed to reduce or increase uptake everywhere. Any comparison should report the soil’s initial nutrient status and the form, timing and amount of nitrogen supplied.
Plants and microbial communities
Vegetation affects shade, litter, root activity, water use and soil carbon. Plant communities also help determine which microbial communities develop. Methanotroph abundance and activity are therefore partly a record of the forest’s hydrology, vegetation and disturbance history, not just a property of the mineral particles.

Global estimates vary because studies use different definitions, measurements and system boundaries. The National Academies’ 2023 assessment summarizes an estimated 18–40 teragrams (Tg) of methane per year removed by methanotrophs in unsaturated, oxic soils. An Annual Reviews synthesis published in 2018 estimated 9–47 Tg CH4 per year for oxidation by aerobic mineral soils globally.

The National Academies also reports that terrestrial soils account for approximately 5% of the total global methane sink in the cited Saunois and colleagues 2024 budget. That percentage describes the global budget’s accounting category, not a fixed fraction for every forest or year.
These ranges should not be added together. They come from different assessments and system boundaries, and they may treat soil classes, extrapolation methods and uncertainty differently. A global range cannot be converted into a reliable uptake rate for an individual stand without local measurements.
Soil is only one part of a forest’s methane exchange
A forest is not a single methane surface. Methanotrophs and methanogens also live on tree stems, bark, branches and foliage. The National Academies reports a 2024 estimate by Gauci and colleagues of 24.6–49.9 Tg CH4 per year for methane uptake by tree surfaces in free-draining upland environments. Some tree types emit methane instead.

When a forest soil becomes a methane source
Flooding and prolonged saturation
Standing water and a high water table cut off oxygen diffusion. Methanogens can then produce methane faster than methanotrophs can consume it, especially below the oxygenated surface layer. Drainage status can change after storms, snowmelt, beaver activity, altered groundwater or management, so a site can switch seasonally between weak uptake, neutrality and emission.
Compaction and disturbance
Heavy equipment, repeated traffic, cultivation and other disturbances reduce air-filled pore space and disrupt the physical conditions that support diffusion. Land conversion and soil cultivation generally weaken the biological and transport conditions associated with methane uptake.
Drought followed by rewetting
Extreme drying can stress microbes and change soil structure. Rewetting may then create oxygen-poor microsites and release pulses of methane, even if the annual balance remains a sink. Measuring only a dry-season snapshot can miss these transitions.
Is the forest-soil methane sink changing?
Long-term observations do not support treating forest uptake as permanent. A long-term PNAS study reported significant declines in methane uptake at forest sites in Baltimore, Maryland, and Hubbard Brook, New Hampshire, and concluded that the soil sink may be declining in several regions.
Best Value
The direction of future change is difficult to predict because drivers interact. Warming can alter reaction rates and water balance; drought can increase diffusion but stress organisms; intense rainfall can create saturation; nitrogen deposition can inhibit methanotrophy in nitrogen-rich soils; and disturbance can compact or expose soil. The 2020 Forest Ecology and Management review cautions that methane sinks may be overestimated and that drought, flooding, warming, disturbance and management can all alter fluxes.
How scientists measure methane removal
Closed-chamber measurements
For plot-scale work, researchers place a sealed chamber over a defined soil area and measure how methane concentration changes through time with gas analysis. The slope indicates uptake or release during that deployment. Results depend on chamber placement, collar installation, soil depth represented, time of day, season, temperature, recent rain and whether roots, litter or nearby tree surfaces are included.
Eddy covariance
Eddy-covariance systems measure turbulent methane exchange above a larger ecosystem footprint. They integrate many patches and can reveal seasonal or interannual patterns, but the footprint changes with wind and atmospheric conditions. The measurement represents the ecosystem area influencing the air column, not a single soil profile.

How to compare results fairly
- Match the hydrologic category: unsaturated upland, seasonally wet or permanently waterlogged.
- Record soil texture, bulk density and compaction because they control gas diffusion.
- Compare the same depth, season and temperature context.
- State whether tree stems, bark, litter and canopy are included.
- Identify the method—closed chamber or eddy covariance—and its spatial footprint.
- Report whether the value is a short-term flux, a seasonal average or an annual estimate.
How to interpret a claim that “forests absorb methane”
The statement is accurate only with a defined compartment and condition. An unsaturated mineral-soil plot can consume atmospheric methane while a nearby wet hollow emits it. Tree surfaces can add uptake or emissions that change the whole-forest balance. A credible claim should identify the site’s water regime, soil and disturbance history, measurement method, time period and system boundary.
For comparing forests, use these axes together rather than ranking sites by forest type alone:
Quick Recap
- Hydrologic status and seasonal water-table behavior.
- Texture, bulk density, pore connectivity and compaction.
- Temperature regime and freeze–thaw or drought history.
- pH, soil carbon and nutrient availability.
- Nitrogen deposition or fertilizer exposure.
- Vegetation and methanotroph community.
- Disturbance, cultivation and land-use history.
- Sampling method, depth, timing and ecosystem boundary.
Practical conclusions
- Look first at oxygen and water. Air-filled pores determine whether atmospheric methane can reach aerobic methanotrophs.
- Expect spatial and seasonal variation. Upland mineral soil, a compacted trail and a flooded depression in the same forest can have different fluxes.
- Treat nitrogen effects as conditional. Nitrogen-rich and nitrogen-poor soils may respond differently.
- Separate soil from tree surfaces. Whole-forest exchange cannot be inferred from a soil chamber alone.
- Use global numbers as ranges, not site rates. The published estimates span different methods and boundaries.
- Watch for long-term decline. Measurements from Baltimore and Hubbard Brook show that an established soil sink can weaken over time.
