Football clubs bring in money from matchdays, broadcasting and competition distributions, and commercial activity. But revenue is not profit, and neither figure alone shows whether a club can meet its bills. To understand a club’s finances, look at how it earns money, what it spends, how transfer fees are accounted for, and whether liabilities are covered by reliable cash and funding.

How do football clubs make money?

Club income is commonly grouped into three streams. The balance varies by club, league and season, and can shift with sporting results, competition participation and commercial performance.

Matchday income

This includes ticket sales and hospitality. It is affected by stadium capacity and use, attendance, ticket mix and the number of home fixtures. Reaching a cup or continental competition can add matches, but participation and match counts vary from season to season.

Broadcasting and competition distributions

Clubs receive income connected to broadcasting rights and, where applicable, distributions from competitions. The amounts a club receives depend on its league and competition context; a club’s participation and sporting performance can affect the income it earns. A change in competition status can therefore affect this revenue stream.

Commercial activity

Commercial income can include sponsorship, merchandising, licensing and related business activity. Its scale depends in part on a club’s audience and commercial reach, as well as the deals and activities it can secure. Deloitte’s 2026 Annual Review covers financial performance during the 2024/25 season and discusses commercial growth and diversified revenue streams.

For sector context, Deloitte reported that the European football market generated €38 billion in revenue during the 2023/24 season. That is an aggregate for the market covered by Deloitte, not an average or representative revenue figure for an individual club.

Why revenue is not the same as financial health

Four measures answer different questions. They should not be treated as interchangeable, and figures are meaningful only when their reporting period, reporting entity and definitions are clear.

  • Revenue: income recognized from the club’s activities. It does not show how much remains after costs.
  • Accounting profit or loss: the result after the relevant income and expenses are recognized under the club’s accounting policies. It is not necessarily the cash available to pay bills.
  • Operating cash flow: cash generated or used by operations over a period. Payment timing matters: amounts recognized in accounts and cash received or paid may fall in different periods.
  • Net debt: a measure of debt after specified cash or other items are taken into account. The precise calculation depends on the definition used; it is not automatically the same as total liabilities or all amounts owed.

These distinctions explain why a club can report substantial revenue yet still face pressure from wages, financing costs, transfer commitments or payment deadlines. Deloitte’s methodology defines measures such as operating profit or loss and net debt or funds using financial-statement data and particular aggregation choices. Comparisons across reports can mislead if the definitions or reporting entities differ.

What do football clubs spend money on?

Costs include squad payroll and other operating expenses, as well as costs associated with player registrations and financing. The squad wage bill is only one part of the total. The timing and accounting treatment of transfer activity can also make a season’s accounts look different from the cash movements during that season.

Transfer fees: cash paid versus accounting expense

A transfer fee headline does not tell you how much cash the buying club paid immediately, nor how much expense it recognized in that financial year. Transfer payments may be made over time. Where a club capitalizes a player registration, the acquisition cost is generally amortized across the contract term: the accounting charge is spread across the relevant periods rather than recorded all at once as an expense on the purchase date.

When a player is sold, the club may record a gain or loss on disposal, based on the accounting treatment and the registration’s remaining carrying value. UEFA’s 2026 regulations address the accounting treatment of player registrations and require relevant calculations to follow defined rules. For a specific club, its published accounts and accounting policies are needed to understand the figures.

Financing costs

Borrowing can bring interest and other financing costs in addition to repayment of principal. UEFA’s regulations define finance costs in connection with financing and financial liabilities. A club’s financial statements and debt disclosures are needed to assess the amounts involved and when they fall due.

How owner funding affects a club’s finances

An owner can provide money through equity or a loan, and the distinction matters. Either can bring cash into the club, but they do not have the same balance-sheet or repayment consequences. Owner funding is not operating revenue merely because the club receives cash.

Giga Mech Games Counter Attack - A Matchday Simulation Game That Captures The Thrills of Football for 1-2 Players!
  • Counter Attack is a football (soccer) strategy game which lasts for 90 minutes. The two players ('managers') each control a team of 11 players. Every player has a unique set of skills that the managers try to best utilise during play. Managers control how the players move, pass, dribble, tackle and shoot.
  • Duels between players on the pitch - whether tackles, shots or headers - are determined by a combination of the unique player skills plus a dice roll. During movement phases, a sand timer is used to keep the pace of the game up.
  • Counter Attack features everything you'd expect in a game of football, from corners to free kicks, penalties to red cards and injuries.
Funding type What it means for the club Key question for readers
Equity contribution Adds capital rather than creating the same kind of repayment claim as a loan. Is the club relying on further contributions, and are they actually being provided?
Owner loan Leaves the club owing principal and potentially interest, according to the loan terms. What are the amount, interest terms, repayment dates and any changes to the balance?

Owner support can help fund operations or investment, but it does not by itself establish that a club is financially secure. The club’s obligations, the terms of any loans and the continuity of support all matter. UEFA says its equity-contribution requirements were tightened to prevent additional debt.

What UEFA’s financial sustainability rules cover

UEFA’s financial sustainability system has three pillars: solvency, stability and cost control. It operates through UEFA’s club monitoring process; it is not a universal rulebook for every club or a complete measure of all club costs. Domestic competitions can have separate rules.

The squad-cost ceiling

For UEFA competition monitoring, the permanent squad-cost ceiling is 70% from the 2025/26 season. The defined calculation covers player and coach wages, transfer costs and agent fees in relation to club revenue. UEFA’s published transition thresholds were 90% in 2023/24 and 80% in 2024/25 before the permanent 70% threshold took effect.

This is a regulatory calculation for the categories and revenue base defined by UEFA, not a universal wage cap and not the club’s entire cost base. The precise calculation and applicable monitoring requirements are set out in UEFA’s regulations.

Other monitoring requirements

UEFA’s rules also include a football-earnings requirement and an overdue-payables requirement. The football-earnings calculation uses defined relevant income and expenses, monitoring periods and permitted adjustments; it is not accurately summarized as a simple rule that clubs may never spend more than they earn. The overdue-payables requirement addresses payment obligations. Exact definitions and adjustments depend on the applicable UEFA regulations and monitoring period.

How to assess a club’s financial position

A single revenue total or transfer-spending figure is not enough. When comparing clubs, use the same financial year, currency, reporting entity and metric definitions, then examine these areas together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Revenue mix: how much comes from matchdays, broadcasting and competition distributions, and commercial activity—and how exposed the club is to changes in any one stream.
  • Squad-cost burden: what payroll and other squad costs represent relative to the relevant revenue base. Do not assume a UEFA squad-cost calculation is identical to a club’s full wage bill.
  • Transfer commitments: distinguish cash instalments and payment timing from amortization, and consider disposal gains or losses.
  • Debt and financing: examine net debt using a stated definition, interest or other finance costs, repayment dates, and whether obligations are owed to owners or external lenders.
  • Owner dependence: identify whether new support is expected, whether it is structured as equity or a loan, and what the terms imply for repayment.
  • Applicable rules: establish whether the figures concern UEFA monitoring, domestic competition rules or another reporting context.

These checks make the central question more precise: not just how much a club earns, but whether its income, costs, cash timing, liabilities and available funding can support its obligations.
