Fog nets collect water by intercepting wind-borne droplets on a vertical mesh. As foggy air passes through, droplets stick to the fibers, merge into larger drops and run by gravity into a gutter, hose and storage tank. The stored water can then be delivered to crops, tree nurseries or restoration plots. This passive system works only where fog occurs regularly, wind can move it through the mesh and the site can convey and store the runoff.

What a fog net is

A fog net is a vertical collector made from mesh stretched across a frame. It does not create water from humidity in clear air and it does not pump groundwater. Instead, it captures liquid droplets already suspended in moving fog.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The mesh is exposed directly to the atmosphere. Wind pushes fog through the openings, and droplets collide with the fibers. Surface tension holds the droplets until neighboring drops coalesce into heavier beads. Gravity pulls the combined water down the mesh into a lower gutter. A conduit then carries the runoff to a cistern, tank or pond, where it can be distributed through hoses or irrigation lines.

This sequence is summarized in the FAO AGRIS abstract for Klemm et al. (2012): “The mesh is directly exposed to the atmosphere, and the foggy air is pushed through the mesh by the wind. Fog droplets are deposited on the mesh, combine to form larger droplets, and run down passing into a storage tank.”

How the collection process works

  1. Fog reaches the collector. A panel is positioned in the path of recurring fog, normally perpendicular to the prevailing cloud flow. The wind supplies the airflow that drives droplets through the mesh.
  2. Droplets contact the fibers. Tiny droplets strike or brush against the mesh strands. Mesh geometry, open area, fiber surface and droplet size affect how efficiently water is captured without excessively blocking airflow.
  3. Water coalesces. Individual droplets join on the fibers and form larger drops. Clean, well-tensioned mesh helps water move downward instead of remaining trapped or being blown away.
  4. Runoff enters the gutter. The drops drain to the bottom edge, where a gutter or channel collects them. The FAO Chile feature describes microdroplets condensing on the meshes and running off into gutters.
  5. Water is conveyed and stored. Plastic conduit or hose carries the flow to a tank, cistern or pond. Elevation can provide gravity flow; otherwise a pump may be needed after collection.
  6. Stored water is allocated. Hoses or irrigation lines deliver water to crops, nursery plants, native-species restoration areas or another approved use. In the Chile project, FAO reports that hoses distribute collected water to irrigation areas.

Where fog nets can work

Recurring fog is the first requirement

A collector needs a dependable fog regime rather than an occasional mist. Coastal deserts, mountain ridges and other arid zones can have frequent low clouds even when rainfall is scarce. A site with many clear days may produce too little water to justify a large installation.

Wind must move air through the mesh

Still air limits the volume of fog that contacts the panel. Excessive wind can stress poles, anchors and mesh, while gusts can carry droplets past the collector. The useful condition is recurring fog accompanied by enough airflow to pass through the panel without damaging the structure.

Topography and plumbing affect the usable yield

A ridge or elevated slope may intercept fog efficiently, but a remote or steep location can make conveyance and maintenance difficult. The route from gutter to storage should be short enough to inspect and protected from abrasion, blockage and animal damage. Storage must sit where collected water can be reached by the distribution system; otherwise a theoretical collection gain may not become usable irrigation water.

Core components and design choices

Component or decision Why it matters Questions to resolve on site
Polypropylene mesh The collector surface catches droplets while allowing foggy air to pass. What mesh opening, fiber construction and weather resistance suit the local fog and wind?
Frame, poles and anchors They keep the panel stretched and oriented through wind loads. Can foundations resist local soil movement, corrosion and seasonal gusts?
Orientation A panel normally works best when placed perpendicular to prevailing fog flow. Which direction do fog and wind most often approach, and does that direction change by season?
Gutter It receives water draining from the lower edge of the mesh. Is the gutter sloped, screened and accessible for cleaning?
Conduit or hose It carries runoff to storage and determines losses over distance and elevation. Can the line maintain flow without leaks, kinks or unsupported spans?
Tank, cistern or pond Storage makes intermittent fog collection useful during dry periods. What volume is needed between fog events, and how will overflow, covers and sediment be managed?
Distribution system Hoses or irrigation lines deliver water to the intended plants or fields. Will gravity supply the plots, or is a pump and power source required?

The OAS technical description identifies rectangular polypropylene-mesh obstacles as a normal collector form and describes droplets coalescing before flowing by gravity through a plastic conduit. A complete project therefore includes more than mesh: structural support, drainage, conveyance and storage are all part of the water system.

How much water can a fog net produce?

There is no single yield figure that applies to every fog net. Output changes with fog frequency, wind speed, droplet size, mesh properties, panel orientation, contamination, maintenance and losses in gutters, hoses and storage. A panel can collect very different volumes in two locations with the same area.

The clearest documented project-scale figure comes from Chile. In a 15 June 2026 case study, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported that the Cerro Grande Ecological Reserve has 34 fog catchers covering 306 square metres. Together, they can collect up to 650,000 litres per year, with most collection occurring in spring when fog and wind are strongest.

Chile example Reported figure Qualification
Existing Cerro Grande installation 34 fog catchers; 306 m² of catchment area Figures reported by FAO on 15 June 2026
Annual collection Up to 650,000 litres Project total; most water arrives in spring when fog and wind are strongest
GEF-supported expansion 90 additional m² Expected to produce over 200,000 litres annually, according to FAO

These are reported results and expectations for a named Chilean reserve, not a guaranteed production rate for another farm or restoration site. For planning, measure local fog and wind, install a monitored pilot panel and size storage around the observed seasonal pattern rather than dividing the Chile total by panel area and assuming the result transfers elsewhere.

Using fog water for farming

Keeping crops alive through dry periods

Fog water can supplement rainfall when a crop is already established but the soil is drying. A tank allows collection during foggy periods and controlled delivery during rain-free intervals. Drip lines or low-flow emitters can direct limited water to the root zone, reducing evaporation compared with broad surface flooding.

Supporting small production cycles

Where the available volume is modest, prioritize high-value beds, seedlings, vegetables or a small demonstration plot instead of attempting to irrigate an entire field. Separate irrigation zones let an operator direct water to plants at the most sensitive growth stage and suspend lower-priority zones when the tank level falls.

Matching storage to demand

Fog is intermittent, so daily crop demand must be compared with the tank’s usable volume. Include dead volume, sediment space and a reserve for hose or conveyance losses. A larger tank does not increase collection; it only preserves more of the water already captured for later use.

Using fog water for reforestation

Nurseries and hardening-off areas

Young native plants often need reliable watering before they are planted out. Fog collection can supply a nursery or a hardening-off area, where plants are gradually exposed to field conditions. This concentrates water where survival gains are greatest and avoids installing irrigation across an entire restoration landscape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Establishment irrigation after planting

Restoration plots may need supplemental water during the first dry season while roots develop. Lay out short distribution lines to planting clusters, inspect emitters regularly and reduce watering as plants become established. The objective is establishment, not permanent replacement of rainfall.

Ecological restoration benefits

FAO reports that the Cerro Grande water supports ecological restoration of native species as well as crop irrigation. The same case also reports drinking-water supply for people and animals, but collection alone does not make water potable; drinking use requires treatment and monitoring under local rules.

Planning a fog-net project step by step

  1. Survey fog and wind. Record fog occurrence, direction, duration and seasonal changes at candidate ridges or coastal slopes. Note whether fog arrives at the same height and direction as the proposed panel.
  2. Choose an accessible alignment. Place the collector across the dominant flow while leaving room for anchors, a safe work area and an inspection path. Avoid locations where rocks, vegetation or buildings will block airflow.
  3. Define the end use. Decide whether the water is for field irrigation, a nursery, restoration, livestock or treated household supply. The end use sets filtration, treatment, storage and distribution requirements.
  4. Size a pilot panel. Start with a manageable collector and install a way to measure daily or weekly runoff. Track both gross gutter flow and water delivered from storage so conveyance losses are visible.
  5. Engineer the frame and anchors. Account for prevailing and extreme winds, soil conditions, corrosion and the weight of wet mesh. Keep the panel taut enough to drain while allowing safe replacement.
  6. Install gutter and conveyance. Give the gutter a continuous fall, protect its inlet from leaves and debris, and support hoses so they do not sag or rub against sharp surfaces. Provide a drain or overflow route for intense collection events.
  7. Provide covered storage. A covered tank limits contamination, evaporation, algae and animal access. Include an inlet screen, an outlet that can be isolated and a low point for periodic sediment removal.
  8. Monitor before expanding. Compare measured production with crop or planting demand across wet and dry fog seasons. Expand only when the pilot demonstrates that structural, maintenance and storage constraints are manageable.

Water quality and safe use

Fog droplets can contact airborne dust, smoke, industrial emissions, bird waste and the collector itself. Mesh, gutters, hoses and tanks can also add contaminants if they are unsuitable, degraded or dirty. For that reason, a fog net is a collection method, not a water-quality certification.

Irrigation users should assess whether local contaminants could harm crops, soil or workers and should keep animals away from untreated storage when required. Water intended for drinking needs a treatment train and testing plan appropriate to local regulations. Typical design questions include first-flush diversion after dirty conditions, filtration, disinfection, tank hygiene and laboratory verification. Do not label collected water potable solely because it looks clear.

Maintenance and common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Fog is visible but little water reaches the tank Panel is misaligned, mesh is blocked, gutter is leaking or the hose is kinked. Check orientation, wash or replace contaminated mesh, inspect every gutter joint and restore continuous hose flow.
Water drips off the front instead of entering the gutter Mesh is slack, the lower edge is uneven or the gutter is too far below the panel. Retension the mesh, level the lower edge and adjust gutter position.
Yield falls after dusty weather Particles reduce effective wetting and alter drainage. Clean using a method that does not damage the fibers, then compare runoff before and after cleaning.
Frame movement or torn mesh Wind loading, failed anchors or material fatigue. Take the panel out of service during unsafe conditions, reinforce foundations and replace damaged sections.
Tank fills but irrigation is unreliable Storage outlet, filter, valve or emitter is blocked; elevation is insufficient. Flush lines, clean filters, check valves and calculate whether a pump or higher tank is needed.
Bad taste, odor or visible growth Contaminated inlet, uncovered storage, stagnant water or unsuitable contact materials. Isolate the supply, clean and disinfect the system, test the water and correct the source before reuse.

There is no universally established maintenance interval or guaranteed yield for all fog-net projects. Set inspection frequency from local exposure: high dust, heavy bird activity, salt spray and strong winds justify more frequent checks than a sheltered site. Keep records of cleaning, repairs, tank levels and measured output so a falling yield can be separated from a change in fog conditions.

How to compare fog-net options

When choosing between designs or project proposals, compare the same eight dimensions rather than mesh area alone:

  • Fog and wind regime: frequency, seasonality, direction and damaging gusts.
  • Mesh material and open area: polypropylene construction, fiber geometry and resistance to fouling.
  • Orientation and anchoring: alignment with cloud flow, foundation quality and access for repairs.
  • Collection area versus seasonal yield: measured or documented output, not an assumed universal rate.
  • Conveyance distance and elevation: hose length, slope, leakage risk and pumping needs.
  • Storage capacity: usable volume, cover, overflow, sediment management and seasonal demand.
  • Maintenance exposure: dust, salt, wildlife, vandalism and availability of replacement parts.
  • End use: irrigation, restoration, livestock or treated potable supply, each with different quality controls.

Limits, costs and realistic expectations

Fog nets are location-specific infrastructure, not universal substitutes for rainfall, wells or reservoirs. The evidence available for this topic does not establish a universal capital cost, a standard maintenance schedule, a single water-quality standard or a guaranteed yield. Costs depend on frame materials, foundations, terrain, storage size, conveyance length, labor and whether pumping or treatment is necessary.

A low-cost mesh panel can still fail as a project if the tank is undersized, the hose route is inaccessible or the fog season does not match crop demand. Conversely, a larger installation may be justified where measured fog, secure anchoring and a clear end use support reliable seasonal production. The strongest decision is therefore based on a monitored pilot and a complete water pathway from atmosphere to plant roots.

Bottom line

Fog nets work by turning wind-driven fog droplets into gravity-fed runoff: mesh captures the droplets, coalescence forms larger drops, a gutter collects them and storage makes the water useful later. They can support farms, nurseries and native-species reforestation where fog and wind are dependable, but performance is site-specific. The Cerro Grande figures—up to 650,000 litres a year from 306 square metres and more than 200,000 litres expected from an added 90 square metres—show what one Chilean project reports, not what every location will produce. Measure local conditions, design the frame and plumbing as one system, protect storage and treat water separately when people or animals may drink it.
