How Floral Scents Deceive Pollinators: The Signals Behind the Trick

Some flowers use scent to lure pollinators by imitating signals for a mate, food, or an egg-laying site. The odor is a blend of airborne chemicals—not a perfume made for people—and it can work with a flower’s color, shape, or texture to trigger an insect’s approach, landing, or probing. The details depend on the particular flower and pollinator; not every deceptive flower smells pleasant or imitates a mate.

How do flowers trick pollinators with scent?

Flowers release blends of volatile compounds that travel through the air. To a pollinator, those compounds can carry information: they may resemble cues associated with a resource or a behavior the insect is already inclined to perform. Depending on the pairing, the scent can attract an insect from a distance and help prompt it to land or probe the flower.

“Trick” is shorthand for an evolved signal, not a flower acting with conscious intent. Odor is not necessarily the only cue. In some systems, visual resemblance, texture, or flower structure reinforces the chemical signal. The exact compounds and the insect’s response vary by species.

What signals can deceptive flowers imitate?

A mate

In sexual deception, a flower mimics chemical cues associated with a female insect. A male may approach and attempt to mate with the flower. During that attempt, pollen can attach to the insect; a later attempt at another flower can transfer it. Orchids in genera such as Ophrys, Chiloglottis, and Drakaea are among the examples discussed in reviews, but their chemical systems are not interchangeable recipes: the cues differ across plant-pollinator pairings.

Food

A flower may imitate the odor or other signals of a rewarding food source without supplying the expected food. This is food deception, not sexual mimicry. An Annual Reviews article from 2020 says food deception through reward-signal mimicry occurs in “close to a third of all orchid species.” That approximate figure refers to orchids and that described mechanism, not to all flowers or all forms of pollination deception. The article does not establish a current census.

An egg-laying or larval-development site

Some flowers mimic places where insects lay eggs or where larvae develop. Flies and beetles are among the insects that may be targeted. An odor that people find strong or fetid can be attractive to those insects. Visual cues and structures that trap and release visitors may reinforce the scent in some systems.

Other deceptive signals

Reviews of orchid pollination also describe shelter imitation, rendezvous attraction, and pseudoantagonism. These are additional categories of deception; they should not be collapsed into mate mimicry or assumed to work through scent alone.

How the main strategies differ

Strategy Signal imitated Typical visitor response Reward
Sexual deception Chemical cues associated with a female insect; visual or physical resemblance may also contribute A male approaches and attempts mating, potentially carrying pollen to another flower The expected mate is not provided; pollen transfer is the flower’s reproductive outcome
Food deception Signals associated with food or a rewarding flower An insect searches, lands, or probes for the expected resource The expected food is absent in the deceptive interaction
Brood-site deception An egg-laying site or place for larval development A fly or beetle may investigate or attempt to use the site The expected breeding or larval resource is absent

These are broad patterns, not rules for every species. The strength and specificity of the mimicry, the pollinator targeted, and the role of non-scent cues depend on the particular system.

Why attract an insect without giving it nectar?

One proposed advantage is that a flower can avoid the costs of producing a reward. Another hypothesis is that unrewarded visitors may move between flowers in ways that promote cross-pollination. These are possible benefits, not a settled explanation for deceptive pollination as a whole.

There is a trade-off: without a reward, a flower may receive fewer visits, which can also mean less fruit production. A 2006 review of deceptive orchid pollination discusses resource allocation and cross-pollination as hypotheses but notes that lower visitation and fruit production complicate them. The review reported generalized food deception in 38 orchid genera and sexual deception in 18 genera; these are review-era counts, not a current census or estimates for all flowering plants.

Do orchids smell like female bees or wasps?

Some orchids produce chemical blends that mimic cues associated with female insects, and males of the targeted pollinator may respond by attempting to mate. That does not mean every orchid smells like a bee or wasp to a person, or that one universal “female insect” odor exists. The particular compounds, the insect targeted, and the role of visual or physical resemblance depend on the orchid species and its pollinator.

Do all deceptive flowers imitate a mate?

No. Sexual deception is one strategy alongside food deception, brood-site imitation, and other forms of deceptive signaling. Even within one strategy, the flower’s scent may be only part of a broader signal that includes appearance or structure.
