To fish in Graveyard Keeper 2, put a rod on your hotbar, cast at a fishing spot, respond when the float dips, then reel during rests and release during fights. The fish you can catch depend on the water, bait, time of day, and how many fish remain at that spot. The mechanics and catch data below come from an unofficial database for build GraveyardKeeper2-4599483364566526977, not a developer-published fishing guide.
What you need before casting
- Put the fishing rod on your hotbar. A rod kept in your backpack does not count.
- Have at least 1 Farming mastery.
- Choose a fishing spot with fish remaining.
- Use bait accepted by a fish in that area, or fish for a species that bites without bait.
The database says the rod itself adds Farming mastery. Each cast consumes one bait immediately, even if the fish gets away or you do not land a catch.

Getting the first rod
The first Basic Rod is given by the twins in the “Two Peas in a Pod” quest in exchange for six clay plates. The database also lists a Basic Rod crafting recipe unlocked at Fishing I for 15 green points, with Flax Thread (45 green points) needed first. These progression requirements are database-reported and may change with a game update.
How to catch a fish without breaking the line
Fishing has two distinct timing stages: first respond to the bite, then manage tension while fighting the hooked fish.

- Cast and wait. The database reports a 1–8 second wait depending on the fish. Pressing before a bite scares it away.
- Respond to the bite cue. When the float dips and the prompt appears, follow the displayed prompt promptly. The database reports a response window of 0.7–2 seconds; use the prompt shown in your current game build.
- Reel during a rest. Once the fish is hooked, hold the reel input while it is resting.
- Release during a fight. Stop reeling as soon as the fish starts fighting. Reeling through a fight raises tension rapidly; the database says the line can break in about a second.
- Repeat until the fish reaches you. Releasing lowers tension quickly, but lets the fish gain some distance. It escapes if it reaches the far end or the line breaks.
If your Farming mastery is below the fish’s Fight value, reeling during a fight can also pull the fish away. Higher Farming mastery increases reeling speed during rests. The Fisherman talent reduces each fish’s Fight value by 1–6, depending on the species.
Worked example: Basic Rod and Roach
The database’s example uses a Basic Rod, Farming mastery M=1, and the rod bonus R=1. It reports a Roach approach speed of 24 units per second while resting—about four seconds of reeling—and tension rising by about 102 per second if you keep reeling during a fight. These are database-reported example values, not independent test results.

Why a spot may stop producing a fish
Fish stock at a spot is finite at a given time. Catching a fish removes it until it returns, up to the spot’s starting stock. Because the reported chances assume a fully stocked location, a depleted spot can yield different results from the percentages shown above.
