In Ultimate Team Champions, EA says opponent selection considers your location, your Form in the active Champions competition, and your platform and cross-play settings. Form is a temporary score based on wins and losses in that competition—not your Rivals Skill Rating or a permanent measure of ability. EA says players can generally expect opponents in similar Form, but it does not publish an exact matching range or promise that every opponent will be equally skilled.
What determines your Champions opponent?
EA’s current How Ultimate Team Champions works in EA SPORTS FC 27 Help page identifies three considerations: location, current Form in the active Champions competition, and platform and cross-play settings. Those factors help define the pool of eligible opponents and the match EA can find at that time. EA does not disclose the precise weighting of each factor or a complete matchmaking formula.

- Current Form: your win-loss results in the Champions competition you are playing.
- Location: a consideration in selecting the EA SPORTS FC Game Data Center used for the match.
- Platform and cross-play settings: conditions that can determine which players are eligible to match with you.
EA describes the intended result as opponents generally having similar Form, while also saying matchmaking tries to find the best available match at a given time. “Similar” is not a published guarantee of identical ability. The public explanation does not give a Form range, a skill-rating equivalent, or a rule for how the search changes if a suitable opponent is not immediately available.

How Champions Form is calculated
Form is a running score for results in your current Champions competition. It starts at zero. Each win adds one point and each loss subtracts one point. It is not a permanent account rating: the score describes your results in that competition, not your overall record or a fixed estimate of your skill.

Example: W/L/L/W/W
- Start at 0.
- Win: Form becomes +1.
- Lose: Form returns to 0.
- Lose: Form becomes -1.
- Win: Form returns to 0.
- Win: Form becomes +1.
After those five results, your Form is +1. The sequence matters because the score reflects the wins and losses in the active competition; it is not a label that permanently follows your account from one competition to another.
What Form does—and does not—tell you
Form is the published results-based input for Champions. It should not be read as a precise skill score. Two players with similar Form can have different levels of experience, squads, tactics, or match-to-match performance. EA does not publish a conversion between Champions Form and a skill rating, nor does its Champions explanation state that the game matches players using Rivals’ Elite Division Skill Rating.
Similar Form is a guideline, not an equal-skill guarantee
In its EA SPORTS FC 26 October Feedback Update, EA said players could generally expect to face others in similar Form. The same statement qualifies that expectation: matchmaking is complex and seeks the best available match at a given time. That leaves room for individual matches to feel uneven without, by itself, proving that Form was ignored.

EA has not published the numeric distance between Forms that it considers acceptable, how long it will search before accepting a less similar Form, or how it balances Form against the other published considerations. It is therefore not possible to infer from one opponent’s apparent quality exactly what their Form was, how long either player waited, or which factor determined the pairing.

Perceived skill is also not directly observable from a single match. A player may have a strong game, use a style that counters yours, or make different decisions under pressure. Conversely, a win or loss does not establish what matchmaking input produced the pairing. Form is a description of recent competition results, not a promise that both players will feel equally challenging.
How location and data centers affect selection
EA says location helps determine which EA SPORTS FC Game Data Center is used for a match. This makes location a geographic and network-related matchmaking consideration. It does not establish that an opponent is physically nearby, identify the precise location of the opponent, or provide a particular latency threshold that guarantees a match.
The distinction matters: the published explanation connects location to data-center selection, not to a disclosed distance-based ranking of individual players. If a match feels delayed, the source does not establish that the opponent’s location caused it or explain how latency is balanced against Form. EA does not publish a formula showing how data-center choice interacts with the other factors.
How platform and cross-play settings affect your eligible pool
Cross-play needs to be enabled for you to match with players on another platform. EA’s current Champions Help page describes these platform groupings:

These groups describe eligibility, not a ranking system. Having cross-play available does not mean every player is necessarily in your pool: settings and the platform grouping still matter. EA’s page does not specify here how large a pool is in a particular region or at a particular time, so platform alone cannot predict who you will face.
What to check if you want cross-platform matches
- Confirm that cross-play is enabled in your game settings if you want to be eligible for cross-platform opponents.
- Check whether your platform belongs to the same cross-play generation group as the platform of a player you expect to encounter.
- Do not assume Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 can cross-play with the other listed platforms; EA’s current page says they are outside cross-play.
The Help page establishes the cross-play requirement and platform groupings, but it does not provide a specific menu path for changing the setting. The available pool can therefore be narrowed by platform eligibility or settings, but the exact size of that pool is not stated.
Champions matchmaking is not the same as Rivals matchmaking
It is easy to conflate the two modes because both pair players for Ultimate Team matches. EA’s descriptions, however, identify different rules. The Champions page lists current competition Form, location, and platform and cross-play considerations. EA’s separate Rivals guide describes rank-based matchmaking and Skill Rating matching within Elite Division, including a 2200 Skill Rating cap for matchmaking in that Rivals context.

The 2200 figure belongs to the Rivals explanation. EA does not state that Champions uses Rivals Skill Rating, applies the Rivals cap, or translates a Champions Form score into that rating. Unless EA publishes a Champions-specific rule, treating the modes as if they share a rating system goes beyond the available explanation.

What the 15-match Finals format means
EA’s current FC 27 Help page lists a 15-match format for Champions Finals. That is useful context for planning the competition, but EA does not identify the number of Finals matches as an opponent-selection input. The published matchmaking considerations remain location, current Champions Form, and platform and cross-play settings.

EA’s October FC 26 feedback update reported that the Form aspect of FUT Champions matchmaking was not working as intended in the first Champions competition of that season. EA said the issue could result in more variety in potential opponents’ skill levels and that it had addressed the problem server-side.
This is a historical report about an early FC 26 competition, not evidence that the same issue is present in FC 27 or that a current FC 26 competition is affected. It also does not reveal the underlying algorithm or define a numerical Form window. EA’s general statement in that update remained qualified: players could generally expect similar Form, while matchmaking sought the best available match at the time.

If an opponent seems much stronger or weaker than expected, the public rules support a few careful conclusions—not a precise diagnosis. Use this checklist to separate what is known from what is guesswork:

- Consider the mode: a Champions pairing should not be explained using Rivals Elite Division Skill Rating unless EA publishes that connection.
- Remember what Form measures: it is the current competition’s win-loss score, not a permanent skill grade.
- Check eligibility settings: cross-play being off or platform-generation restrictions can limit the opponents available to you.
- Do not infer the opponent’s Form from their play: performance in one match does not reveal the hidden pairing details.
- Do not infer a specific search rule: EA has not published the acceptable Form gap, search duration, or queue-expansion mechanism.
These limits mean there is no reliable way to reverse-engineer the matchmaking decision from the scoreline or a perceived skill gap alone. The published description identifies the broad inputs and goal, not the exact decision for an individual match.
What EA has and has not made public
EA’s current FC 27 Champions Help article is the primary source for the stated inputs, Form arithmetic, cross-play eligibility, and Finals format. Its separate Rivals Help article is relevant only for distinguishing that mode’s Skill Rating rules. The FC 26 October Feedback Update is the source for the historical Form issue and EA’s qualified description of similar-Form matchmaking.
- Published: Champions considers location, current competition Form, and platform and cross-play settings; Form starts at zero, increases by one for a win, and decreases by one for a loss.
- Not published: a numeric Champions Form window, an equivalence to a skill rating, a weighting formula, or exact queue fallback behavior.
- Mode-specific: the 2200 Elite Division cap is described for Rivals, not Champions.
- Format context: the 15-match Finals format is stated by EA, but not as a matching input.
That is the practical boundary of what can be stated confidently: EA describes the inputs and intended general behavior, but does not expose enough detail to calculate in advance who you will face or to audit a particular pairing.
