Fast radio bursts (FRBs) can help astronomers find the Universe’s missing ordinary matter and understand how gas reshapes cosmic structure. Their millisecond radio signals are dispersed by ionized material along the way; by measuring that effect and locating bursts in host galaxies, researchers can estimate how much gas lies between galaxies and how it influences matter clustering. FRBs do not directly detect dark matter, dark energy or neutrinos, but they can improve the measurements used to study those questions.
What fast radio bursts reveal in their signals
FRBs are brief, bright radio transients, most of them observed at cosmological distances. As a burst travels, free electrons in ionized gas delay lower-frequency radio waves more than higher-frequency waves. This frequency-dependent delay, called dispersion, measures the integrated electron content along the signal’s path. It is a line-of-sight total: by itself, it does not say exactly where the electrons are.

That distinction matters because the signal can pass through several environments: the Milky Way, the FRB’s host galaxy and its surroundings, and the intergalactic medium (IGM), the diffuse gas between galaxies. Pinning a burst to a host galaxy and modeling the other contributions helps researchers estimate the IGM share. A 2020 Nature study established important groundwork for using localized FRBs in a baryon census.
How FRBs help locate the Universe’s missing ordinary matter
Much of the Universe’s ordinary matter, or baryons, is not contained in stars. It is diffuse and ionized, making it difficult to observe directly. FRB dispersion offers a way to trace that gas across long distances and estimate how baryons are divided among the IGM, galaxies and galaxy clusters.

A 2025 Nature Astronomy study using localized FRBs reported a late-Universe baryon abundance of Ωb h70 = 0.051 ± 0.006 and estimated that the IGM contains a baryon fraction of fIGM = 0.76, with uncertainties of −0.11/+0.10. These are that study’s estimates, derived by accounting for contributions along the bursts’ paths; they are not a final, uncertainty-free census.
Here, “missing matter” means ordinary baryonic matter that is hard to see because it is diffuse and ionized. It does not mean dark matter. FRBs constrain the amount and distribution of ionized baryons indirectly, through their effect on radio signals and the modeling needed to interpret those signals.

What FRBs can tell us about gas and cosmic structure
Gas does not simply remain where galaxies form. Energy released by stars and other processes can push baryons out of galaxies and their surrounding halos. This feedback changes how matter is distributed across space, which in turn affects measurements of cosmic structure.
A 2026 Nature Astronomy study used 114 FRBs to infer fluctuations in baryon density and constrain feedback’s effects on matter clustering at wavenumbers k ≈ 0.1–3 h Mpc⁻¹. The authors described their constraints as competitive with legacy measurements. That is a result of their analysis, not a settled consensus about the precision FRBs will ultimately achieve.

Accounting for baryonic effects can help scientists interpret observations such as weak gravitational lensing, where foreground matter bends light from more distant galaxies. This makes FRBs potentially useful in cosmological analyses involving dark matter, dark energy and neutrino mass: they help constrain the ordinary-matter contribution that can otherwise complicate those measurements. They do not independently identify or directly detect any of those components.
What FRB host galaxies suggest about their origins
Identifying a host galaxy provides more than a correction to the dispersion measurement. Host demographics also help test ideas about what produces FRBs. A 2024 Nature study analyzed 30 host galaxies observed by the DSA-110 survey and found a deficit of low-mass hosts, with FRBs occurring preferentially in massive star-forming galaxies.

The study discussed metallicity—the abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium—as one possible influence on progenitors. That is a proposed explanation, not proof of a single cause. At least some FRBs repeat, and at least some are associated with magnetars, but the full range of progenitors and the radio-emission mechanism remain unresolved, as summarized in a 2023 Reviews of Modern Physics review.
What FRBs can—and cannot—settle
- They can probe: the integrated free-electron content along a sightline, the distribution of ionized baryons when paired with localization and modeling, and the possible impact of gas feedback on matter clustering.
- They can inform: cosmological measurements that need to account for ordinary matter, including studies of structure relevant to dark matter, dark energy and neutrino mass.
- They cannot establish on their own: the precise location of every electron along a path, a complete final baryon census, a single FRB progenitor for all bursts, or a direct detection of dark matter, dark energy or neutrinos.
The strength of the method depends on the FRB sample, the quality of host localization and how reliably researchers separate Milky Way, host-galaxy and IGM contributions. As those measurements improve, FRBs can become a more useful independent way to map otherwise elusive gas and account for its influence on the cosmic web.
