ChatGPT went from a public research preview in November 2022 to more than 1 billion weekly active users, according to OpenAI’s August 2026 announcement. OpenAI also reports sharply rising revenue and workplace use. Those figures describe different things—users, business seats, messages and revenue—and should not be treated as interchangeable or as independently audited results.
How quickly did ChatGPT gain users?
OpenAI released ChatGPT publicly as a research preview on November 30, 2022. In its 2025 economic research paper, the company recounts that the service had more than 1 million registered users by December 5, 2022. OpenAI later described the early pace as 1 million users in five days and 100 million in two months; that characterization appeared in a July 2025 analysis and is OpenAI’s own claim, not an independent ranking of consumer technology adoption. | August 31, 2026 | More than 1 billion | Weekly active users, as stated in OpenAI’s announcement |
The historical and consumer-plan figures come from OpenAI Economic Research’s 2025 paper, “How People Use ChatGPT.” The billion-user milestone comes from OpenAI’s August 31, 2026 announcement. The September 2025 consumer-plan figure and the later total weekly-active-user figure are not a single directly comparable series: the dates and stated populations differ.

What does “weekly active users” mean here?
It is a measure of activity during a week, not the number of paid subscriptions, accounts created over time, messages sent or people using ChatGPT at work. OpenAI’s 2025 paper also cautions that its account credentials and browser cookies can count more than one account or device for an individual, so the figures should not be read as an exact count of distinct people.
How has OpenAI’s reported revenue changed?
In its August 2026 announcement, OpenAI said it reached $1 billion in revenue within a year of ChatGPT’s launch, was generating $1 billion per quarter by the end of 2024, and was generating $2 billion per month at the time of the announcement. These are company-reported revenue milestones, not an independent audit. The intervals differ: the first is a milestone within a year, the second is a quarterly run rate reported for late 2024, and the third is a monthly figure reported in August 2026. What do the workplace figures show?
OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report says it served more than 7 million workplace seats. It reports that ChatGPT Enterprise seats grew approximately ninefold year over year, while weekly Enterprise messages grew approximately eightfold since November 2024. The report describes its findings as analysis of de-identified, aggregated customer usage. OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report

Seats, customers and messages answer different questions. A seat is a workplace provision metric, not necessarily one active person; message volume indicates activity, not the number of unique users. OpenAI’s 2023 Enterprise launch described features including security and privacy provisions, faster access to GPT-4, longer context windows and data analysis. That establishes what the offering included, but not which feature drove adoption. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise announcement

Where is adoption growing, and how is ChatGPT used at work?
OpenAI’s 2026 regional analysis reports rising use across continents since July 2023, with relative growth fastest in Africa and Asia under the measure used in that analysis. Its regional measure excludes countries where ChatGPT does not operate and users under 18, so it does not represent every person or country. OpenAI’s regional adoption analysis
A separate OpenAI economic analysis reports that 28% of employed U.S. adults who had ever used ChatGPT said they used it at work, compared with 8% in 2023. The denominator is employed U.S. adults who had ever used ChatGPT—not all employed U.S. adults—and the figure is a survey response, not a count of enterprise seats. What explains the growth—and what remains unproven?
The available figures document the scale and timing of ChatGPT adoption, revenue milestones and workplace deployment. They do not establish a complete causal explanation. OpenAI’s product announcements provide context about features available to users and businesses, but the figures alone cannot show that a particular launch, feature, demographic or market caused the trajectory. Nor do OpenAI’s own publications provide a neutral, independently verified comparison with competitors.
