How Fast-Charging EV Batteries Are Changing Cars, Chargers and the Grid

EV fast charging is advancing across the whole system: battery cells must accept power safely, vehicles need compatible high-voltage hardware, and charging networks and electricity grids must deliver that power reliably. Manufacturer claims of charging in minutes are not yet a universal measure of what drivers will experience. The charge window, temperature, vehicle, charger and evidence behind a figure all matter.

What makes an EV charge faster?

Charging speed is a property of the battery, vehicle and charger working together—not of a battery cell or charging post alone. A pack contains hundreds or thousands of cells. Those cells must accept high current without overheating or suffering unacceptable wear, while the vehicle’s electronics and cooling system manage the power and the charger supplies it.

Higher voltage helps, but does not remove cell limits

Many electric cars have used systems around 400 volts; higher-voltage designs are expanding. For a given power, higher voltage means lower current, which can reduce cabling losses. It also raises demands on power electronics and cell quality. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says cell-level limits and effective cooling remain central to faster charging. IEA, Ultra-fast charging batteries (2026).

C-rate expresses charge or discharge current relative to a cell’s capacity. A high C-rate can indicate a cell is designed to accept a large current for its size, but it is not by itself a promise of a particular vehicle’s charging time: pack design, temperature management, charging curve and the usable state-of-charge window also matter.

Higher-voltage models are reaching the market

The IEA counted more than 30 new high-voltage electric-car models released globally in 2025, over 80% of them from Chinese manufacturers. It characterized 2025 as a turning point that included the first 1,000-volt models and megawatt-scale charging for passenger cars. That is a count of new models, not a measure of their market share or of drivers’ access to compatible chargers. IEA, Ultra-fast charging batteries (2026).

Which battery technologies are shaping the race?

LFP is already a major part of the market

The competition is not waiting for solid-state batteries. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) accounted for more than 55% of global EV battery deployment in 2025, up from nearly 50% in 2024, according to the IEA. IEA, Electric vehicle batteries — Global EV Outlook 2026.

BYD describes its Blade Battery 2.0 as an LFP battery and says it increases energy density by 5% while enabling faster charging. Those are BYD’s claims about its own product; the IEA’s deployment figures do not independently verify the battery’s performance. BYD announcement, 5 March 2026.

Solid-state batteries remain a development and roadmap story

Solid-state batteries may offer performance advantages, but the IEA says their production is more complex and costly than lithium-ion production, and pack integration imposes stricter mechanical requirements. It expects all-solid-state batteries to remain limited to premium segments until the first half of the 2030s. IEA, Electric vehicle batteries — Global EV Outlook 2026.

In June 2026, Stellantis and Factorial said they had integrated FEST solid-state cells into a Dodge Charger Daytona development vehicle and begun road testing it. The partners’ figures of 375 Wh/kg and charging from 15% to 90% in 18 minutes refer to cell demonstrations conducted in 2025—not a retail car or a production-pack test. The road tests are intended to assess performance, safety and reliability. Stellantis announcement, 11 June 2026.

How do the headline charging claims compare?

The figures below describe different charge windows, products and development stages. They are manufacturer claims or roadmap targets—not results from a common, independent test. A 10%–70% result cannot be treated as equivalent to a 10%–80% or 10%–97% result.

Geely A company-announced 10%–70% time of 4.5 minutes and 10%–97% time of 8 minutes 40 seconds. Figures from a company announcement reported by the Associated Press (AP) in September 2026, not an independent head-to-head test. AP, 24 September 2026.
Stellantis and Factorial development vehicle 375 Wh/kg and 15%–90% charging in 18 minutes. Reported 2025 cell-demonstration figures. The partners began road-testing a development vehicle in June 2026; the cell figures are not established production-car performance. Stellantis, 11 June 2026.

What a charging-time number leaves out

To compare two charging claims fairly, look for the starting and ending state of charge, battery and ambient temperatures, vehicle and charger used, and whether the stated power is a brief peak or sustained. Also check whether the result is a company claim, a roadmap target, a development-stage demonstration or an independent test. When these details are absent, the figure cannot establish how quickly a customer’s car will charge in ordinary use.

Peak power is not the same as average power over a session. Charging time covers a defined change in state of charge, and battery and vehicle controls determine how much power is accepted along the way. A headline maximum therefore cannot, on its own, tell a driver how long a particular stop will take. The published claims above do not supply a common set of test conditions from which to calculate a direct ranking.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

There is no single time that applies to every EV or charging stop. Use a vehicle-specific estimate for the particular charger and conditions rather than applying a company’s headline time to another car. The figures in the comparison above cover selected charge windows and systems; they are not estimates for the entire EV market.

It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and plugs into a 240V outlet with a 14-50 receptacle, requiring a 40A or 50A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter
  • Check the charge window. A time from 10% to 70% covers less charging than one from 10% to 97%. An 18-minute result from 15% to 90% describes yet another interval.
  • Check compatibility. The car must be designed to accept the charger’s power, and the charger must support the vehicle’s system.
  • Check conditions and evidence. Temperature, cooling and the vehicle’s power-control strategy affect charging; a roadmap or cell demonstration is not a customer-car result.
  • Check the charging location. The network must have a compatible, working high-power charger available. A vehicle’s theoretical capability cannot make an unavailable charger usable.

What could keep ultra-fast charging from becoming routine?

Charger coverage, reliability and grid capacity

High-power charging requires more than installing a post: sites need a reliable supply of electricity, and grids must be able to handle peak demand. The IEA identifies widespread, reliable ultra-fast chargers and resilient electricity grids as necessary for consumers to benefit. IEA, Ultra-fast charging batteries (2026).

AP reported in September 2026 that much of China’s public charging infrastructure was below one megawatt at the time, while the highest charging claims rely on greater power. Its report also cited analyst concerns about network expansion and grid upgrades. Independent analyst of China’s auto industry Lei Xing told AP, “China is way, way, way ahead in terms of multiple players engaged in the charging competition.” That describes the intensity of competition, not proof that every driver can access the newest charging speeds. AP, 24 September 2026.

Battery life and safety evidence

Repeated high-current charging and the heat it can produce make cooling and battery management important. The cited sources do not provide a common, independent long-term comparison of battery life across the announced systems. BYD reports safety tests for its battery, and Stellantis and Factorial say development-vehicle road testing is underway; neither establishes comparative lifetime performance across competing products. Those limits mean the speed claims alone cannot answer how different systems will age in long-term use.

What the charging race does—and does not—show

Battery chemistry, vehicle voltage, power electronics, thermal management and charging infrastructure are all advancing, but at different speeds and with different kinds of evidence. LFP already accounts for a large share of global EV battery deployment, while the most dramatic solid-state results remain tied to cell demonstrations, development vehicles or future targets. Company-announced charging times point to what compatible systems may achieve; they do not establish a universal charging experience, broad charger access or proven lifetime durability.
