Fast charging can keep a humanoid robot productive for more of a shift by shortening energy-replenishment pauses. It cannot increase the energy stored in a battery: dependable uptime still depends on the robot’s workload, battery size, charging power, cooling, controls, and site workflow. For some operations, autonomous battery swapping can reduce the interruption even further, but it requires charged spare packs and additional infrastructure.
What “uptime” means for a humanoid robot
Robot uptime is not simply the battery’s advertised runtime. For a deployment manager, the useful figure is the share of scheduled time during which the robot is available and performing its assigned work. That includes walking, manipulation, perception, onboard computing, safety checks, navigation to a charger, connection time, charging, and any required inspections.

Most current humanoids are measured in hours rather than a complete industrial shift. McKinsey wrote in 2025 that most humanoids run for two to four hours on a charge, well below the eight-to-12-hour length of a typical real-world shift. Fraunhofer IPA measured a Unitree G1 at 1 hour 49 minutes in a typical scenario and 2 hours 49 minutes while standing still in 2026. Standing still uses less energy than walking and manipulating objects, so the second number should not be treated as a normal workday runtime.

It does not create energy and does not remove the need for multiple packs, a larger battery, task scheduling, or a second robot when the workload exceeds what one battery can support.

How fast charging raises productive availability
Consider a simplified cycle in which a robot works for two hours and then charges for one hour. Ignoring travel, task handoffs and safety margins, its theoretical duty fraction is 2 ÷ (2 + 1), or about 67%. If the same pack can be replenished in 30 minutes, the theoretical fraction becomes 2 ÷ (2 + 0.5), or 80%. Actual results will be lower if the robot cannot reach the charger reliably, must wait for a connector, charges more slowly near a high state of charge, or spends time in a thermal cooldown.
The operational gain is largest when charging is aligned with natural pauses: meal breaks, shift changes, scheduled maintenance, pallet replenishment or a task that already requires the robot to wait. A high charge rate that cannot be used because the robot is busy, hot or unable to connect safely does not translate into equivalent uptime.
Charge time is only one part of the cycle
- Usable runtime: Measure energy consumption under the actual payload, walking speed, manipulation pattern, compute load and environmental temperature.
- Required state of charge: A specification may describe a full charge, while the operation may need only enough energy to reach the next break. Charging from 20% to 80% can take a different amount of time from charging from empty to full.
- Access time: Include travel to the station, alignment, connector engagement, authentication and departure checks.
- Thermal limits: Charging power may be reduced when cells, power electronics or connectors approach their permitted temperature.
- Workflow reliability: A charger blocked by another robot or a connector that fails intermittently can erase the theoretical advantage.
What current humanoid figures show
Vendor and laboratory figures are model-specific. Payload, gait, software, temperature, battery reserve and the definition of “runtime” can change the result, so these examples should be used for planning ranges rather than as a universal industry benchmark.

The figures illustrate why a buying decision should focus on guaranteed shift coverage rather than a single headline number. A robot with a longer runtime but a long, unpredictable recharge may deliver less work than one with a smaller pack and a repeatable charging workflow.

What a fast-charging system must contain
Fast charging is a system property, not merely a powerful wall charger. The battery pack, charger, connectors, cooling loop, sensors and battery-management system (BMS) must be designed and validated together.
Battery cells and pack design
Higher charging current creates more heat and can promote lithium plating. Over repeated cycles, those conditions can accelerate loss of capacity and power. A pack sized for high energy density may provide longer runtime but be less tolerant of extreme charging power; a pack optimized for power may accept current more readily but carry less energy for the same mass.
A 2026 experimental study of cylindrical cells found that higher charging C-rates generated more heat, and that charging produced more heat than discharging in the tested cells. The result is not a universal temperature curve for every humanoid pack, but it reinforces the need to specify charge power together with cooling capacity and allowable temperature limits.
Thermal management
Cooling must keep cells in a safe, useful temperature window and limit temperature differences between cells. Uneven temperatures can cause uneven aging and force the BMS to reduce power even when the charger is capable of more. Active cooling, as listed for the Figure system’s 2 kW charge, can support a higher rate, but it also consumes energy, adds components and creates maintenance points.

Battery-management and power electronics
The BMS monitors voltage, current, temperature and cell balance. It should be able to reduce or stop charging when a sensor, connector or cell behaves outside its limits. Power electronics must handle transients from walking and manipulation as well as the charging load. A specification that gives only peak kilowatts does not establish how long that power can be sustained or what state-of-charge range it covers.
Connectors and mechanical interfaces
Humanoids repeatedly connect and disconnect under vibration, dust and possible misalignment. The interface needs a controlled sequence for electrical isolation, mechanical locking, data exchange and confirmation before the robot moves away. Contact resistance, wear, ingress protection and service intervals belong in the uptime calculation.
Fast charging versus battery swapping
Fast charging leaves the installed pack in the robot and brings electrical energy to it. Swapping removes the depleted pack and installs a charged spare, moving most of the charging time away from the robot’s critical path.
| Consideration | Fast charging | Battery swapping |
|---|---|---|
| Interruption at the robot | Can range from minutes to about an hour or more, depending on the target charge | Potentially very short when a charged pack and automation are ready |
| Core infrastructure | High-power charger, cooling, connector and electrical capacity | Swap mechanism, charged-pack storage, chargers and safety interlocks |
| Inventory | Usually one installed pack per robot, subject to planned downtime | Requires one or more spare packs per operating cycle |
| Failure modes | Thermal throttling, connector faults and charger outages | Pack availability, alignment, latch wear and interoperability failures |
| Energy and maintenance | Cooling energy and high-current component wear | Additional packs, charging cycles, handling and inspection |
| Example | LimX Luna lists about four hours of battery life and about one hour to charge | UBTECH says Walker S2 can autonomously swap a battery within three minutes |
Swapping is not automatically cheaper or safer. Every spare pack adds capital cost, storage requirements, charging cycles and a potential handling hazard. The station must verify pack identity, state of health, temperature and charge before installation. Fast charging avoids that inventory but places more stress on the installed pack and demands sufficient site power.

Can one humanoid cover a full shift?
For most currently documented systems, not on one battery without planned charging or swapping. A full shift can still be covered by combining several short work periods with breaks, using spare packs, deploying overlapping robots, or assigning lower-energy tasks during recharge windows.
A practical coverage calculation
- Record the shift length and the robot’s actual task schedule, including breaks and handoffs.
- Measure usable runtime at the required payload and pace, not only the vendor’s best-case figure.
- Set a reserve threshold for safe return to the station; do not plan to arrive at zero percent.
- Measure the time from “leave task” to “ready for work,” including travel, connection, charge or swap, checks and departure.
- Calculate how many cycles and spare packs are needed to cover the shift with a maintenance and fault allowance.
- Validate the plan over repeated shifts, because battery aging and heat can change the cycle time.
For example, a two-hour work period followed by a one-hour charge yields a 67% theoretical duty fraction before logistics. A schedule that uses a 20-minute break for partial charging may be more effective than a nominally faster charger that requires a separate trip and cooldown. The correct comparison is productive hours delivered per shift, not charging power in isolation.
Safety, degradation and maintenance risks
High-current charging can increase cell temperature and the risk of lithium plating, capacity fade and power fade. Repeated transient loads from dynamic walking and manipulation add another stress pattern. The 2026 review of humanoid batteries describes a three-way tension between energy density for runtime, power capability for movement and long cycle life under repeated loads.
- Use temperature, voltage and current limits validated for the complete pack, not copied from a cell’s marketing specification.
- Trend charge time, peak temperature, delivered energy and BMS warnings for every cycle.
- Inspect connectors, latches and cooling paths at defined intervals.
- Quarantine packs with swelling, abnormal temperature rise, insulation faults or unexplained capacity loss.
- Provide physical separation, fire detection and an emergency isolation procedure appropriate to the battery chemistry and site.
- Define who can restart a charger after a fault and what evidence is required before returning a pack to service.
Charging power should taper or stop when the pack reaches its permitted limits. A system that advertises a high peak rate but spends much of the cycle throttled may deliver less usable energy per hour than expected.

How to specify a dependable deployment
Ask for comparable operating conditions
Request runtime and charge curves at the intended payload, walking speed, ambient temperature, software version and state-of-charge limits. Ask whether runtime means continuous motion, a mixed task, standby or a laboratory demonstration.
Specify the coverage guarantee
Write the requirement in operational terms: productive hours per shift, maximum interruption, minimum reserve, allowed charger downtime and recovery after a failed charge. McKinsey recommends evaluating guaranteed shift coverage, infrastructure and safety evidence rather than relying on a headline charge rate.
Check site capacity
Confirm incoming electrical capacity, peak demand, cable routing, cooling-water or air requirements, network connectivity and space for safe access. Several robots charging simultaneously can create a site-level peak far above the power of one station.
Plan for aging
Ask how capacity and charge time are expected to change with cycle count, temperature exposure and calendar age. A shift plan that works only with a new pack is not a reliable production plan.
Common planning mistakes
- Using standing-still runtime for walking work: Static endurance is not equivalent to a manipulation route.
- Comparing full-charge times with partial-charge needs: Define the state-of-charge window for the actual break.
- Ignoring charger access: Include navigation, alignment, queueing and post-charge checks.
- Buying peak power without cooling: Thermal throttling can remove the promised advantage.
- Assuming a swap is always instant: Spare-pack availability, authentication and mechanical checks determine the real interruption.
- Generalizing one model’s claim: Figure, Luna, Atlas, Walker S2, Digit 5 and Unitree G1 figures are not interchangeable.
What the numbers mean for operations
The strongest case for fast charging is a workflow in which the robot can repeatedly take short, predictable replenishment opportunities and the site can supply the required power safely. The strongest case for swapping is a workflow where even a brief charge interruption is unacceptable and the organization can justify spare-pack inventory and automated handling.
Agility’s 2026 announcement of a 90-minute Digit 5 runtime and nine-minute charge using Nyobolt technology implies a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio, but it remains a manufacturer claim until independent field data establish performance across payloads, temperatures and repeated shifts. Similarly, a three-minute autonomous swap is valuable only if the station has a charged, healthy pack ready and can repeat the process reliably.
For purchasing and deployment, rank options by verified productive shift coverage, not by battery capacity or charging watts alone. Include runtime under the real task, charge or swap time to the required state, electrical and thermal infrastructure, safety evidence, connector and BMS compatibility, battery cycle life, maintenance intervals and a plan for degraded packs.
