How Fast Can Modern Military Helicopters Fly? Apache, Chinook, Black Hawk and Osprey Speeds

Modern military helicopters do not have one universal top speed. Published upper-end figures for familiar conventional rotorcraft generally fall around 150–170 knots, but the result changes with the aircraft, variant and definition being used. Boeing lists the AH-64E Apache at 150+ knots (279+ kph) in maximum level flight, while its CH-47F Block II Chinook page gives 170 KTAS (302 kph) maximum speed and 157 KTAS (291 kph) cruise speed.

The U.S. Army lists the UH-60L/M Black Hawk at 120–145 knots cruise airspeed and 156 knots maximum continuous airspeed. The MV-22B Osprey can reach up to 280 knots, but it is a tiltrotor that changes into turboprop-style airplane flight, so it is not a like-for-like conventional helicopter comparison.

Published speeds for current military rotorcraft

The most reliable way to answer a speed question is to preserve the exact label used by the organization publishing the number. “Maximum speed,” “maximum level flight speed,” “cruise speed,” “maximum continuous airspeed” and “combat mission speed” describe different operating points or limits. They should not be averaged into a single ranking.

Aircraft Published figure Source’s exact label
Boeing AH-64E Apache 150+ knots (279+ kph) Maximum level flight speed
Boeing CH-47F Block II Chinook 170 KTAS (302 kph) Maximum speed
Boeing CH-47F Block II Chinook 157 KTAS (291 kph) Cruise speed
UH-60L/M Black Hawk 120–145 knots Cruise airspeed
UH-60L/M Black Hawk 156 knots Maximum continuous airspeed
MV-22B Osprey Up to 280 knots Speed reported by the U.S. Army; tiltrotor category

The Chinook figures are given as knots true airspeed (KTAS) by Boeing. That unit label matters: it describes speed through the surrounding air after accounting for the aircraft’s operating conditions, not a guaranteed speed over the ground. The figures in this table come from manufacturer or military publications, not from a common flight test performed under identical conditions.

What the speed labels actually mean

Maximum speed

A maximum-speed figure is an upper performance value under the conditions defined by the aircraft maker or military. It is not necessarily the speed crews use for an entire mission, and it may be limited by fuel consumption, payload, temperature, altitude, handling margins or other operating restrictions. Boeing calls 170 KTAS the CH-47F Block II’s maximum speed, but separately lists a lower cruise figure.

Maximum level flight speed

“Maximum level flight speed” identifies a specific condition: the aircraft is flying level rather than climbing or descending. Boeing uses this wording for the AH-64E Apache and publishes 150+ knots (279+ kph). Because the label is more specific than a bare “top speed,” it should not be silently compared with a source that uses a different test condition.

Cruise speed

Cruise is the practical operating figure selected for sustained travel. It is normally below the aircraft’s maximum. The CH-47F Block II’s published cruise speed is 157 KTAS (291 kph), compared with its 170 KTAS maximum. For the Black Hawk, the Army gives a cruise airspeed range of 120–145 knots rather than one single cruise number.

Maximum continuous airspeed

The Black Hawk data also include a 156-knot maximum continuous airspeed. This is a separate operating-limit category from both the cruise range and an aircraft’s absolute maximum. Treating it as interchangeable with either one can make the aircraft appear faster or slower than the source intended.

Combat mission speed

Military manuals sometimes report speed in the context of a mission profile. The Army’s Apache comparison labels its figures “combat mission speed.” That term should remain attached to the number; it is not automatically the same as a manufacturer’s maximum-level-flight specification.

AH-64 Apache: why two official figures can both be correct

The AH-64 is a clear example of why variant and terminology matter. Boeing’s current AH-64 Apache page lists the AH-64E at 150+ knots (279+ kph) maximum level flight speed: Boeing AH-64 Apache specifications.

An older U.S. Army article gives 145 knots for the AH-64D and 164 knots for the AH-64E under the Army’s “combat mission speed” label: U.S. Army AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopter article. Those numbers are not a contradiction that should be solved by averaging them. They refer to different variants and use different source labels. The defensible statement is that published AH-64E figures include 150+ knots maximum level flight from Boeing and 164 knots combat mission speed in the Army article.

The Apache is an attack helicopter, so a specification sheet can emphasize a mission condition rather than a short-duration dash. A reader comparing it with a transport helicopter should first align the variant and performance term, then compare the numbers.

CH-47F Block II Chinook: the fastest conventional example in this comparison

Boeing lists the CH-47F Block II Chinook at 170 KTAS (302 kph) maximum speed and 157 KTAS (291 kph) cruise speed: Boeing H-47 Chinook specifications. Among the conventional helicopters in the table, that is the highest published maximum figure supplied here.

It is still too broad to call the Chinook the fastest military helicopter in the world. The comparison covers selected published specifications, not every national model, prototype, upgrade or flight-test condition. The precise claim supported by these figures is narrower: the CH-47F Block II has the highest maximum-speed number among these conventional examples, according to Boeing’s listed specification.

The lower 157-KTAS cruise figure illustrates how a heavy-lift helicopter can have a high upper limit without operating there continuously. Cruise speed is the number that better represents sustained movement between locations, while the maximum figure describes the edge of the published envelope.

This presentation is useful because it shows a range rather than pretending every flight uses one speed. A Black Hawk carrying a different load, flying in different weather or following a different mission plan may use a point within that cruise range. The 156-knot value is the Army’s maximum continuous airspeed, not a claim that the helicopter should cruise at that speed on every sortie.

When someone asks, “How fast is a Black Hawk?” the most accurate short answer is therefore “about 120–145 knots in the Army’s listed cruise range, with 156 knots maximum continuous airspeed for the UH-60L/M data.” A single unlabeled number leaves out the distinction the manual makes.

Why one helicopter has several speeds

Variant and upgrade differences

Military aircraft names often cover multiple generations and configurations. The Apache figures above differ between the D and E variants. Similar differences can occur when an aircraft receives new engines, rotor systems, avionics, armor, fuel arrangements or mission equipment. Always identify the exact model before treating a specification as universal.

Mission load and operating conditions

A published figure is tied to the conditions selected for that source. Payload, fuel state, external stores, temperature, altitude and required safety margins can all affect the speed a crew can use. A lightly loaded aircraft making a dash is not operating under the same constraints as one carrying troops, weapons or cargo.

Airspeed versus ground speed

Airspeed measures motion relative to the surrounding air. Ground speed also reflects wind. A helicopter flying at a stated airspeed can cover ground faster with a tailwind or slower into a headwind. For that reason, a specification cannot promise a fixed travel time between two bases without route and weather information.

Different publication dates and purposes

The Boeing pages provide current variant-specific manufacturer figures accessed for this article on October 13, 2026. The Army flight manual is dated 2020, and the Army Apache article is dated 2014. An older military article may still be valuable, but its terminology and variant context should remain visible beside a newer manufacturer specification.

Where the MV-22B Osprey fits

The Army reports the MV-22B at up to 280 knots: U.S. Army report on an Osprey air assault. That number is far above the conventional-helicopter figures listed above, but the aircraft belongs in a separate category.

A tiltrotor takes off and hovers with its rotors oriented vertically. In forward flight, it rotates the engine-and-rotor assemblies and operates more like a turboprop airplane. Calling the MV-22B simply the “fastest helicopter” hides the design difference that makes the comparison misleading. It is better described as a fast military tiltrotor whose reported speed reaches up to 280 knots.

The distinction also explains why informal lists can produce confusing results. If the question is about conventional helicopters whose rotors remain in the helicopter configuration during forward flight, exclude the Osprey. If the question is about military rotorcraft generally, include it but label it separately.

How to compare military helicopter speeds without being misled

  1. Identify the exact aircraft and variant. “Apache” or “Black Hawk” alone may cover more than one model.
  2. Copy the source’s performance label. Keep maximum, maximum level flight, cruise, maximum continuous and combat mission speed distinct.
  3. Check the unit. KTAS means knots true airspeed; a knot-based figure is not automatically a ground-speed prediction.
  4. Separate conventional helicopters from tiltrotors. The MV-22B’s 280-knot figure should not be placed in an unmarked helicopter ranking.
  5. Compare like with like. A cruise figure should be compared with another cruise figure, not with a maximum or a mission-specific number.
  6. State the evidence boundary. A manufacturer figure for one variant does not establish a worldwide record across every military helicopter.

So, what is the practical answer?

For the conventional military helicopters covered by the published figures here, think in terms of roughly 150–170 knots at the upper end, with normal cruise figures often lower. The Apache is listed at 150+ knots maximum level flight, the CH-47F Block II at 170 KTAS maximum and 157 KTAS cruise, and the UH-60L/M at 120–145 knots cruise with 156 knots maximum continuous airspeed.

The exact answer to “How fast can a modern military helicopter fly?” is therefore a specification with a label, not one universal number. If tiltrotors are included, the MV-22B’s reported 280 knots changes the category of the comparison rather than providing a conventional helicopter top speed.
