Point Nemo is approximately 2,688 kilometres (1,670 miles or 1,451 nautical miles) from the nearest land. The oceanic point at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W lies in the South Pacific, equally distant—within measurement limits—from three remote land points: Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island. If the International Space Station happens to pass directly overhead, its astronauts can be closer than any person on Earth, but that is a temporary geometric condition, not a permanent ranking of the nearest people.

Where Point Nemo is located

Point Nemo is the commonly used name for the South Pacific oceanic pole of inaccessibility: the point in the ocean farthest from any coastline. NOAA’s National Ocean Service gives its coordinates as 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. In decimal form, the same location is often rounded to about 48.87°S, 123.39°W.

Those coordinates place it well south of the equator and far from major continental shores. It is not an island, reef or permanent settlement. “Point” means a calculated position on the ocean surface, identified by latitude and longitude. A vessel can travel through or near it, but there is no piece of land at the coordinate itself.

The name comes from Captain Nemo, the submarine commander in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The literary reference is appropriate because the location is defined by its separation from ordinary coastal geography, although the name has no effect on the calculation.

The distance from Point Nemo to land

The concise, commonly published answer is about 2,688 km from the nearest land. That is approximately 1,670 statute miles or 1,451 nautical miles. NOAA’s National Ocean Service published the 2,688-kilometre figure as an approximation on a page last updated January 4, 2021. Guinness World Records gives the same rounded values.

A peer-reviewed calculation gives a closely matching result: 2,690 ± 2 km. Daniel Garcia-Castellanos and Umberto Lombardo reported that value in “Poles of Inaccessibility: A Calculation Algorithm for the Remotest Places on Earth,” published in the Scottish Geographical Journal, volume 123, issue 3, in September 2007. The difference between 2,688 km and 2,690 km is not a disagreement about the location. One is a rounded public figure; the other is a calculated result with a stated uncertainty.

Unit Distance How to read it
Kilometres About 2,688 km NOAA’s approximate figure
Statute miles About 1,670 miles Land-distance miles used in everyday travel
Nautical miles About 1,451 nautical miles Marine and aviation navigation unit
Peer-reviewed calculation 2,690 ± 2 km 2007 numerical result using a digitized coastline

Because all of these figures describe the same remote point, adding extra decimal places would suggest a precision that the underlying coastline data do not support.

Land point General direction from Point Nemo Geographic description
Ducie Island North Part of the Pitcairn Islands
Motu Nui Northeast An islet near Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
Maher Island South An island near Antarctica

NOAA identifies these three places as the nearest land points. The 2007 calculation likewise used the coasts of Motu Nui, Maher Island and Ducie Island. The point is described as virtually equidistant from them, so presenting one island as decisively closer than the other two would overstate what the measurements establish. Separate point-to-point distances for each island are not stated in the cited sources.

The word “land” also matters. Point Nemo is not measured from the nearest inhabited city or from the nearest continental shoreline; it is measured against the closest coastline or island coast. A tiny islet can therefore be one of the decisive reference points even though it is not a mainland destination.

How geographers find the oceanic pole of inaccessibility

The calculation is a maximum-distance problem. Imagine every possible position on the ocean being assigned its great-circle distance to the nearest coastline. The oceanic pole of inaccessibility is the position where that nearest-coast distance is as large as possible.

  1. Represent the coastlines. The calculation begins with a digital map of coastlines and islands. Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo used a digitized coastline dataset with an approximate resolution of 500 metres.
  2. Measure spherical distances. Distances are measured along great-circle paths, the shortest routes on Earth’s curved surface, rather than as straight lines on a flat map.
  3. Search for the maximum. A numerical algorithm tests candidate ocean locations and identifies the point whose nearest coastline is farthest away.
  4. Check the surrounding reference coasts. At Point Nemo, the limiting coastlines are those of Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island.

The result cannot be more precise than the geographic data and the definition of a coastline. A shoreline is not a mathematically perfect line: tides, estuaries, deltas, mapping scale and the choice of which small features count as coast can all alter a local measurement. The published 2,690 ± 2 km result therefore communicates both the calculated location and the uncertainty attached to that method.

Are astronauts really the nearest people?

Sometimes—but only when the International Space Station is positioned appropriately. Guinness World Records explains the geometry this way: if someone were at Point Nemo while the ISS were directly overhead, the station’s crew, at an altitude of around 400 km (248 miles), would be nearer than anyone on Earth.

That comparison works because the distance upward to a spacecraft directly above the observer is roughly its altitude, whereas the nearest person standing on land would be separated by thousands of kilometres of ocean. The ISS does not need to be permanently stationed over Point Nemo; it only needs to be passing across the relevant part of the sky at that moment.

The condition is essential. The ISS orbits Earth and is continually moving. When it is over another region, its crew may be much farther from Point Nemo than people aboard a ship or on one of the surrounding islands. “Astronauts are the closest people” is therefore a conditional statement about an overhead pass, not a fact that remains true every hour of every day.

What the comparison does not mean

  • It does not identify one astronaut who is always nearest.
  • It does not mean the ISS is normally above Point Nemo.
  • It does not replace the land-distance measurement; the 2,688 km figure is measured to coastlines, not to people.
  • It does not establish a permanent population at Point Nemo. The point is an ocean coordinate, and no verified count of people there is part of the distance claim.

The Atlantic has made the same point in practical terms: from a boat at Point Nemo, the closest humans will likely be ISS astronauts as the station passes overhead. “Likely” and “as it passes” preserve the moving, time-dependent nature of the comparison.

Why the nearest-person answer changes

“Nearest people” can mean several different things, and each interpretation produces a different answer:

  • Nearest people on land: the answer depends on where people are located on the surrounding islands or Antarctic territory at that time. The available distance figures establish the nearest land points, not a permanently nearest individual.
  • Nearest people anywhere: an aircraft, research vessel or other ship could be closer than a person on shore, depending on its route.
  • Nearest people above Earth: an ISS crew member can be the closest human during a sufficiently near pass, especially if the station is directly overhead.

For that reason, a responsible answer does not name a specific person as permanently closest. The defensible claim is comparative and conditional: Point Nemo is farther from land than any other ocean location, and an overhead ISS pass can put astronauts closer than people on Earth.

Putting 2,688 kilometres into perspective

The number describes a radius-like separation to the nearest coast, not a single standard travel route. A ship would follow navigational and weather constraints rather than a perfectly straight line, so a voyage from Point Nemo to an island could cover more distance than the great-circle measurement. The figure also should not be confused with the distance to a national capital, a port or a continent; all three nearest references are remote islands or Antarctic land.

Using nautical miles helps explain why the value appears in maritime discussions. One nautical mile is based on latitude and is used for navigation, while statute miles are the everyday land-distance unit. Kilometres remain the clearest international measure, which is why official summaries lead with 2,688 km.

Maps can make the location look closer to one reference point than another because many world maps distort scale, especially toward the edges. The three-way description comes from spherical-distance calculations, not from measuring a ruler on a rectangular map.

Common misunderstandings about Point Nemo

“It is the middle of the Pacific.”

Point Nemo is in the South Pacific, but “middle” is informal. Its formal meaning is the point farthest from land, calculated from coastlines around it.

“It is exactly 2,688 km from one island.”

The rounded figure applies to the nearest land set as a whole. NOAA names Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island, and the peer-reviewed calculation treats their coasts as the limiting references.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Astronauts are always the closest humans.”

No. The ISS comparison applies when the station is directly overhead or otherwise close enough. Its orbit changes the answer continuously.

“The coordinates prove centimetre-level accuracy.”

No. The coordinates identify the calculated location, while coastline resolution and shoreline definitions limit how finely the distance can be interpreted.

The answer in one line

Point Nemo, at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, is about 2,688 km (1,670 miles; 1,451 nautical miles) from the nearest land—Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island—and astronauts become the nearest people only when the International Space Station passes close overhead.
