Families can make a baking soda rocket with a compatible snap-lid plastic film canister, vinegar, baking soda, and a clear outdoor launch area. For a straightforward family launch, follow NASA’s educator procedure from start to finish rather than combining it with another recipe: vinegar goes in the canister, while a small tissue packet keeps the baking soda separate until the lid is closed.
What you need
- A plastic film canister with a tight-fitting snap lid. Check that its lid fits securely inside the rim; a loose or incompatible lid can cause a failed or premature launch.
- Vinegar, baking soda, and a small piece of single-ply tissue.
- Eye protection for everyone near the launch.
- An outdoor launch spot clear of people, buildings, and clutter, plus a catch pan for the launch and cleanup.
- Paper and tape only if you want to decorate the canister. Keep decorations away from the rim and lid so they do not interfere with closure.
How to assemble and launch the NASA-style version
NASA’s educator method specifies 1 milliliter (¼ teaspoon) of baking soda held in single-ply tissue above vinegar in the canister. The tissue delays contact until the canister is closed. Follow the complete NASA procedure for its vinegar amount, loading sequence, and setup; do not substitute quantities or steps from another activity.
- Choose and prepare the location. Work outdoors in an uncluttered area. Put a catch pan where the launch will happen, make sure nobody is in the flight path, and have children wear eye protection under close adult supervision.
- Load the canister. An adult should handle the loading. Keep the canister level as directed in NASA’s method, with the vinegar inside and the measured baking soda wrapped in single-ply tissue positioned above it. Close the lid securely, without leaning over the loaded canister.
- Position it safely. Set the canister in the launch position described by NASA, with the lid directed toward the catch pan and away from faces and other people. Never point it at anyone.
- Step back and wait. Move away before the reaction builds pressure. If it has not launched after about 30 seconds, follow NASA’s teacher-check guidance: an adult should check it with the lid oriented toward a catch pan. Children should not pick up a loaded canister or look inside it.
- Clean up. Once the launch is complete and it is safe to approach, collect the liquid and rinse the canister and launch area.
Other complete procedures are alternatives, not mix-and-match recipes
Published activities use different quantities, loading methods, and launch setups. Pick one source’s complete procedure and follow its own safety instructions. Mixing one source’s measurements with another’s sequence can change how the rocket behaves.

All three approaches depend on a compatible film canister and a lid that closes as intended. LPI specifies a lid that fits inside the canister rim. If you add a paper body or fins, make sure they do not obstruct the lid.

How does a baking soda rocket work?
Baking soda and vinegar react and produce carbon dioxide gas. In a closed canister, gas pressure rises until it forces the lid off. As gas escapes, the canister moves in the opposite direction. This is a simple demonstration of thrust, not a miniature space-launch vehicle: a small film canister does not reproduce the scale, engineering, or operating conditions of a real rocket.
Make the next launch a fair experiment
After a successful launch, change one factor at a time so you can tell what may have affected the result. Keep the canister and baking soda amount constant while changing vinegar volume, or keep the mixture constant while adding equal masses to the paper rocket. Record each launch’s delay before liftoff and its relative height, and repeat each condition if practical.

- Write down the exact recipe and setup for every attempt.
- Change only one variable between comparisons.
- Use the same launch area and measurement method each time.
- Compare repeated attempts rather than drawing a conclusion from a single launch.
Science Buddies reports that, in its own activity trials, a rocket nearly full of vinegar launched roughly 6 feet, while one with the least vinegar flew nearly 15 feet. Those are observations from that specific setup, not expected heights for every canister or recipe. LPI notes that adding mass should reduce height when thrust is fixed, which is another reason to change only one factor at a time.

October does not change the recipe. Check the local forecast and daylight, then launch only when there is a clear outdoor space and conditions let the group see and stay well away from the rocket. If the ground is wet or the area is crowded or windy, choose a safer location or another time rather than moving the activity indoors.
