Fairphone identifies seven user-replaceable parts, including both earbud batteries, the charging-case battery, individual earbuds, ear tips, silicone rings and case components. The company says the battery swaps are tool-free and glue-free, while broader opening and part changes use your fingers and, where needed, a screwdriver.
That means a worn battery, a lost left or right earbud or a damaged case does not automatically require a new set. Fairphone lists a €9.95 two-battery earbud kit, a €12.95 case battery and a €29.95 charging-case core, alongside individual replacement earbuds. Fairbuds 2 cost €119 at the European recommended retail price, deliver up to eight hours from the earbuds or 40 hours with the case, and have a stated spare-parts support aim through the end of 2030.

What “modular” means on Fairbuds 2
Most true-wireless earbuds are sealed assemblies. When a tiny lithium battery loses capacity, the practical repair is often to replace the entire pair. Fairbuds 2 take a different approach: the enclosure is intended to come apart, and several worn or damaged modules can be bought separately.

Its US product FAQ makes a narrower, important promise: both earbud and case battery changes are designed to be tool-free and glue-free. In other words, you do not need to pry through adhesive to perform the battery service the company describes, although opening other sections can involve the screwdriver mentioned on the product page.

Fairphone calls the design “user-repairable.” The central claim is seven replaceable spare parts, not that every internal component is independently serviceable. The replaceable modules documented in its support material are:
- Left replacement earbud
- Right replacement earbud
- Earbud battery and silicone-ring set
- Additional silicone rings
- Eartips
- Charging-case outer shell or case body
- Charging-case inner/core assembly and battery
The support pages describe these as separate service options; Fairphone’s seven-part figure is the company’s way of grouping the modular system. It should not be read as a promise that every screw, circuit or acoustic component can be purchased individually.
Which Fairbuds 2 parts can you replace?
Earbuds and lost components
A single replacement earbud is documented, so losing one side does not require purchasing a complete pair. Left and right units are listed separately because each side is a distinct component. This is particularly useful for households where one earbud is misplaced or damaged while the other remains usable.
Earbud batteries
Both earbud batteries are replaceable. Fairphone sells an earbud battery kit containing two batteries and two silicone rings for €9.95. The kit is intended for Fairbuds, not Fairbuds XL. Two batteries are supplied because the original left and right batteries commonly reach the end of their useful life at roughly the same time.

Silicone rings and eartips
The silicone rings that sit around the earbud modules can be replaced, and eartips are separately replaceable wear items. These parts matter for fit and sealing as well as appearance: a stretched ring or worn tip can make an otherwise healthy earbud feel loose or reduce isolation.
Charging-case parts
The case has several replaceable elements. Fairphone lists a case battery at €12.95, a €29.95 charging-case core and an outer case or shell. A damaged shell therefore does not necessarily condemn the electronics inside, while a failed battery does not automatically require replacing the whole case.
How battery replacement works
Battery aging is the most predictable failure mode for wireless earbuds. Every charge cycle gradually reduces capacity, and the effect becomes obvious when playback time falls far below the original specification. Fairbuds 2’s modular construction gives you a component-level remedy instead of treating that decline as the end of the product.
- Identify the failing module. If one earbud drains much faster than the other, the affected earbud battery may be the problem. If both earbuds still perform normally but the case no longer stores enough charge, the case battery is the relevant part.
- Obtain the correct replacement. The €9.95 earbud kit contains two batteries and two silicone rings and is for Fairbuds, not Fairbuds XL. The documented case-battery price is €12.95. Check the regional spare-parts shop for current availability before ordering because inventory can vary by market.
- Open the appropriate module. Fairphone describes the battery swap as tool-free and glue-free. Its product page also says the earbuds can be opened with your fingers and a screwdriver. Do not force a seam or use improvised metal tools that could damage the housing or battery.
- Exchange the battery and ring as directed. The kit’s rings are supplied alongside the batteries, allowing the sealing or mounting ring to be refreshed at the same time. Keep the replacement battery oriented and seated exactly as shown in Fairphone’s current service instructions.
- Reassemble and test. Confirm that the earbud closes fully, charges in the case and reconnects to the companion app or phone. Test each side independently before relying on the pair for travel or calls.
The procedure is designed for user service, but a lithium battery is still an energy-storage device. Stop if a cell is swollen, punctured, hot or visibly damaged; do not bend, crush or short it. Follow local rules for disposing of the removed battery rather than placing it in household waste.

Replacement versus a true hardware upgrade
Modularity makes maintenance and refreshes easier, but it does not create an open-ended hardware-upgrade platform. The documented physical options are replacement parts: new batteries, rings, eartips, shells, case assemblies and individual earbuds. Fairphone has not promised a higher-capacity battery, a new radio module or cross-generation component compatibility.
There is a separate software path. Fairphone’s product story refers to firmware updates and potential new features through the companion app. Those are software improvements, not a guaranteed roadmap for faster wireless standards, new sensors or a future high-performance earbud module. Treat “upgrade” in Fairbuds 2 coverage as a refresh of replaceable parts unless Fairphone announces a specific compatible component.

The battery-kit price is for the documented two-cell kit, not a per-earbud price. Playback figures are “up to” ratings with ANC off, so actual time changes with volume, codecs, calls, temperature and other settings. A replacement part can be inexpensive relative to €119, but shipping, taxes and regional stock can change the final amount.
How Fairbuds 2 compare with conventional earbuds

This is a comparison of the replaceability claims recorded in that table, not a laboratory teardown of each model. “None” means the manufacturer product information used for the comparison did not list user-replaceable parts or batteries; it does not prove that a specialist repairer could never open the device.

Battery-life expectations
Fairbuds 2 are rated for up to eight hours of earbud playback with ANC disabled and up to 40 hours when the charging case is included. Those figures describe runtime when new under the stated test conditions. Replaceable batteries address the predictable capacity loss that occurs over ownership, but they do not guarantee that every other component will last as long.
Warranty
Fairphone lists warranty coverage of up to three years under its stated conditions. The exact eligibility and registration requirements depend on the applicable regional terms, so retain proof of purchase and check the terms for your market. A warranty claim and a user-paid spare-part repair are different routes: a covered defect may be handled by Fairphone, while normal battery wear is generally the reason owners use replacement parts.

Support through 2030
Fairphone says it aims to support Fairbuds spare parts until the end of 2030. That is a company aim, not a guarantee that every item will remain continuously in stock in every country. If long service life is your priority, buy the parts you are most likely to need while they are available, especially the two-battery kit and case battery, and keep them stored according to the manufacturer’s safety guidance.

Practical decisions before you repair
- Replace one earbud when only one side is lost or damaged. Buying a single side avoids discarding a working earbud and case.
- Choose the two-battery kit when runtime has declined in both earbuds. The paired kit is designed around batteries that commonly age together and includes new silicone rings.
- Replace the case battery when the earbuds still perform normally but the case cannot provide its expected recharges.
- Choose a shell or case component for physical damage. A cracked exterior and a failed charging circuit are different faults; the modular parts are not interchangeable solutions.
- Do not assume a newer Fairbuds generation will share parts. Cross-generation compatibility is not promised in the documented material.
Common pitfalls and safer troubleshooting
The wrong product family
The €9.95 battery kit is for Fairbuds and specifically excludes Fairbuds XL. Confirm the model before ordering. A physically similar cell is not a safe substitute unless Fairphone identifies it as compatible.
Confusing a battery problem with a charging problem
Clean, inspect and reseat the earbuds in the case before ordering parts. If one side intermittently charges, the issue could involve contact alignment or the case rather than battery capacity. Replace the battery only after the symptom remains consistent with reduced capacity.
Expecting a performance leap
A fresh battery restores lost runtime; it does not turn Fairbuds 2 into a newer radio or acoustic platform. Firmware may add app-enabled features, but Fairphone has not documented a hardware-upgrade roadmap.

Prices in this article are the documented euro figures. Availability, taxes, shipping and currency conversion vary by market. The 2030 support aim should therefore be used for planning, not as assurance that a part will be immediately orderable everywhere.
Who benefits most from the modular design?
Fairbuds 2 make the strongest practical case for people who normally replace earbuds because of battery wear, a lost single side or a damaged case. The low documented prices of the battery modules mean a common failure can be addressed without buying another €119 set, and the ability to refresh rings, eartips and the shell lets owners maintain fit and appearance as well as runtime.
The design is less significant if you replace earbuds frequently for sound, noise-cancellation or wireless-standard improvements. Fairphone’s documented parts are maintenance modules, not a promise of annual performance upgrades. For everyone else, seven user-replaceable parts, replaceable batteries in both the earbuds and case, and a spare-parts support aim through 2030 make Fairbuds 2 unusually repair-oriented among mainstream true-wireless options.
