Short answer: an exciton condensate is a coherent collective state of electrically neutral electron–hole pairs. A superconductor condenses charged Cooper pairs, while an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) condenses atoms behaving as bosons. The ideas overlap because all involve macroscopic quantum coherence, but the particles, environments and measurable transport are different.

Exciton condensates can produce striking electrical signals in semiconductor bilayers, yet that does not mean the neutral excitons carry an ordinary zero-resistance current. Disorder, vortices, optical loss and the specific device platform determine what is actually observed.

What an exciton condensate is

An exciton is a bound state of an electron and a positively charged hole. In a semiconductor bilayer or coupled quantum wells, electrons can occupy one layer while holes occupy the other. Their Coulomb attraction binds them into an electron–hole pair without giving the pair a net electric charge.

When many excitons occupy compatible quantum states and develop a shared phase, the system can form an exciton condensate. The condensate is therefore not merely a gas containing excitons; it is a collective ordered state. J. P. Eisenstein’s 2014 review describes the bilayer quantum-Hall case as resembling a superconductor, “only with the Cooper pairs replaced by excitons consisting of electrons in one layer bound to holes in the other.” The analogy identifies a type of coherent order, not identical microscopic physics.

Why bilayers are useful

Separating electrons and holes into nearby layers helps keep excitons from immediately recombining. The layers can then be contacted and measured independently. Experiments can look for correlations between the two layers, including counterflow: electrons move one way in one layer while the electrical response in the other layer corresponds to motion in the opposite direction. Such observations are evidence of interlayer coherence, but they should not be described as a conventional charged current carried by bare excitons.

What “condensation” means here

Condensation refers to collective quantum coherence. It does not require that every exciton be individually visible in an optical detector, nor does it guarantee a universal transport law. The observable signatures depend on magnetic field, temperature, layer separation, disorder, density and whether the platform is an equilibrium bilayer or a driven optical device.

Exciton condensate versus superconductor

The comparison is helpful because both systems have a coherent many-body order and involve paired constituents. The decisive difference is what is paired. In a familiar superconductor, electrons form charged Cooper pairs in an electronic material. In an exciton condensate, an electron binds to a hole, producing a neutral composite boson.

System Condensing or paired entity Typical setting What transport means
Superconductor Charged Cooper pairs Electronic material The condensate supports superconducting electrical behavior; the pairing analogy alone does not establish the same mechanism in an exciton system.
Exciton condensate Electron–hole excitons, which are composite bosons Semiconductor bilayers or coupled quantum wells Interlayer coherence can produce counterflow and other electrical signatures, although the excitons themselves are neutral.
Atomic BEC Atoms acting as bosons Dilute atomic gas Its defining order is Bose condensation of atoms rather than electronic pairing in a solid.
Exciton-polariton condensate Hybrid light–matter quasiparticles Semiconductor microcavity or related optical platform Often driven and dissipative; it is not simply a bare-exciton condensate.

Charged pairs versus neutral pairs

A Cooper pair has a net electric charge, so a superconducting condensate directly participates in electrical charge transport. An exciton’s electron and hole charges cancel overall. The neutral pair can still couple the two layers: moving electrons in one layer is linked to the hole component in the other. The resulting electrical response is a property of the coupled bilayer and its coherent order, not proof that neutral excitons behave like charged carriers in a wire.

The analogy has a boundary

Eisenstein and A. H. MacDonald emphasize that the superconducting comparison is a way to understand interparticle coherence. It should not be used to claim that every exciton condensate has zero resistance, a conventional Meissner effect or the same vortex dynamics as a superconductor. The relevant observables and dissipation channels depend on the platform.

Is an exciton condensate a Bose–Einstein condensate?

Yes, in the broad classification that treats Bose condensation as a collective state of bosonic objects, an exciton condensate can be viewed as a BEC of composite bosons. But “BEC” is not the name of one material. It describes the ordering phenomenon; the identity and environment of the boson still matter.

Composite bosons and atomic bosons

An exciton is built from two fermions: an electron and a hole. Together they have bosonic behavior under the conditions relevant to condensation. In the familiar dilute atomic BEC, the condensed objects are atoms in a gas. Thus, both systems can show macroscopic coherence, yet one is an electron–hole composite in a semiconductor and the other is an atomic gas.

This distinction affects interactions, confinement, lifetime, detection and how the condensate is prepared. A semiconductor device has crystal disorder, contacts and electromagnetic screening. An atomic gas is usually isolated from solid-state disorder and controlled by optical or magnetic trapping. Calling both states BEC does not erase those environmental differences.

Dark, bright and gray exciton condensates

In the dilute semiconductor regime discussed by Monique Combescot, Roland Combescot and François Dubin, the lowest-energy exciton condensate can be optically dark because it does not couple efficiently to light. At densities above a threshold, a coherent bright component can emerge. The resulting state is described as “gray,” meaning that dark and optically active components coexist.

Darkness is therefore a platform- and density-dependent property, not a definition of every exciton condensate. Optical visibility should not be used as the sole test for whether coherent order exists.

Why exciton-polariton condensates are a separate case

An exciton-polariton is a hybrid of an exciton and a cavity photon. A polariton condensate therefore contains mixed light–matter quasiparticles, not only electron–hole pairs. The optical component makes these systems easy to probe with emitted light and allows phenomena such as long-range order, vortices and superfluid-like behavior to be studied.

That same photonic component means polariton condensates are commonly driven and lossy. Particles can leak from the optical cavity, so pumping and decay are part of the dynamics. The 2015 review by Benoît Deveaud discusses dissipation and disorder as central features. A polariton condensate should consequently be identified as a distinct, often nonequilibrium platform rather than labeled a bare-exciton condensate without qualification.

Do exciton condensates conduct electricity without resistance?

There is no single yes-or-no answer that applies to every exciton condensate. In a quantum-Hall bilayer, counterflow and other interlayer measurements can reveal coherent transport. However, the neutral exciton is not an ordinary charged current carrier, and the measured conductivity is controlled by the full bilayer.

Why counterflow is not automatically zero resistance

In the idealized picture, a coherent condensate can support counterflow with very little dissipation. Real samples contain disorder and topological defects. Eisenstein and MacDonald note that disorder-induced mobile vortices can limit counterflow conductivity in quantum-Hall excitonic condensates. This is why a claim that “exciton condensates have zero resistance” is too broad: it ignores the device geometry, measurement channel and dissipation from vortices.

What an electrical experiment actually measures

  • Layer-resolved voltage: contacts probe each semiconductor layer separately.
  • Counterflow response: equal and opposite layer currents test interlayer phase coherence.
  • Disorder and vortex effects: mobile defects can produce dissipation even when coherent order is present.
  • Platform losses: polariton systems add optical pumping and decay rather than ordinary dc conduction.

Electrical anomalies are therefore evidence to interpret, not a universal definition of exciton condensation. The appropriate comparison is with the specific superconducting or superfluid response being measured.

How the main platforms differ

Bilayer quantum-Hall systems

These systems use two closely spaced electron layers in a strong magnetic field. At sufficiently low temperature and an appropriate high magnetic field, the bilayer can develop an interlayer-coherent state. The electron in one layer and the hole associated with the missing state in the other layer form the excitonic description. Counterflow experiments are especially important because they expose correlations between the layers.

Indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells

Here, electrons and holes are deliberately separated into neighboring wells. Their longer spatial separation can extend the exciton lifetime compared with a direct electron–hole pair, allowing collective behavior and spatial coherence to be investigated through photoluminescence. The condensate may still have a dark ground-state component in the dilute regime, with brightness changing as density increases.

Van der Waals layered materials

A 2025 perspective in Nature Reviews Physics identifies van der Waals layered materials as an expanding platform for studying exciton condensation. It discusses electrical transport, proposed routes toward higher-temperature condensation and unresolved challenges. These are research directions, not established consumer technologies or guaranteed high-temperature devices.

Exciton-polariton microcavities

Microcavity polaritons combine excitonic matter with photons. Their emitted light gives direct optical access to the collective state, while pumping and decay make the system dissipative. Vortices and superfluid behavior can appear at sufficient density, but the interpretation must account for nonequilibrium conditions and disorder.

A practical way to classify a claimed condensate

  1. Identify the boson. Is it an electron–hole exciton, an atom, or an exciton–photon polariton?
  2. Check the setting. A semiconductor bilayer, coupled quantum wells, van der Waals layers and a dilute atomic gas have different constraints.
  3. Determine the measurement. Electrical counterflow, photoluminescence, phase coherence and vortex imaging test different aspects of order.
  4. Ask whether the system is equilibrium or driven. Optical pumping and particle loss are central to polariton condensates.
  5. Separate coherence from transport. A coherent condensate can show dissipation from disorder, vortices or decay.
  6. Use optical visibility cautiously. A dark condensate may be weakly coupled to light, while a bright component can emerge above a density threshold.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “An exciton is just a Cooper pair.” Both are paired objects, but a Cooper pair is charged whereas an exciton is a neutral electron–hole composite.
  • “Every exciton condensate is an atomic BEC.” BEC names a type of collective order; exciton BEC and atomic BEC contain different bosons in different environments.
  • “Neutral means electrically irrelevant.” Bilayer coherence can create strong layer-resolved electrical signatures even though the exciton has no net charge.
  • “A polariton condensate and an exciton condensate are identical.” Polaritons contain a photon component and are often dissipative.
  • “Condensation guarantees zero resistance.” Disorder-induced vortices and platform-specific losses can limit conductivity.
  • “If it does not glow, it is not condensed.” The dilute semiconductor ground state can be optically dark.

What the comparison tells us

The cleanest distinction is to track three properties: the constituent, the charge and the environment. Superconductors organize charged Cooper pairs in an electronic material. Exciton condensates organize neutral electron–hole composites, often across semiconductor layers. Atomic BECs organize atoms in a dilute gas. Exciton-polariton condensates organize mixed light–matter quasiparticles in an optical structure.

Those differences explain why the same words—coherence, condensation, superfluidity and resistance—cannot be transferred from one platform to another without qualification. An exciton condensate can resemble a superconductor in its collective order, qualify as a BEC in the bosonic sense and still display transport limited by disorder or optical dissipation. That combination is the reason it is best understood as its own family of quantum matter.
