Ethena says protocol revenue can come from staking yield, perpetual-futures funding or dated-futures basis, and rewards on liquid stablecoins. USDe itself does not pay interest to holders; users who are eligible can stake it for sUSDe, whose value may increase as rewards accrue.
Those sources are variable rather than guaranteed. Funding can turn negative, collateral can lose value, exchanges and custody providers can fail, smart contracts can contain defects, and USDe can trade away from one dollar. Direct redemption is also restricted, so a holder may depend on secondary-market liquidity.

What USDe is
Ethena describes USDe as a synthetic dollar, not a fiat-backed stablecoin. A fiat stablecoin normally targets its value by holding conventional currency or short-term fiat-denominated assets. USDe instead combines crypto assets with derivatives intended to offset their price exposure. Ethena’s own overview states that USDe is not the same as a fiat stablecoin such as USDC or USDT.
The protocol may hold Bitcoin, Ether and other governance-approved spot assets, together with liquid stablecoins. Against the volatile spot assets it establishes short positions in perpetual or deliverable futures. If the spot asset rises, the short position should lose value while the collateral gains value; if the asset falls, the short should gain while the collateral loses value. This is a delta-hedging design, not a guarantee that every movement cancels perfectly.

The hedge can be affected by funding payments, futures basis, execution prices, exchange limits, collateral haircuts, liquidation rules, custody arrangements and delays between venues. The result is intended to reduce directional crypto exposure while leaving the protocol exposed to the plumbing of derivatives markets.
How the backing and hedge are supposed to work
Spot collateral
USDe’s backing can include crypto assets, liquid-staked tokens and liquid stablecoins. Liquid-staked tokens introduce an additional dependency: their market price and redemption mechanism must continue to function. A token can trade below the value of the underlying asset, and a smart-contract problem in a liquid-staking system can impair collateral even when the underlying network is operating normally.
Short derivatives
Ethena uses short perpetual futures and, where available, dated futures to offset the price risk of spot holdings. A short position is not free insurance. It requires collateral, depends on an exchange or trading venue, and can be liquidated if margin requirements are breached. The protocol must also roll or close positions, manage order-book depth and handle periods when markets move faster than its execution systems.

What the hedge does not promise
- It does not make USDe a bank deposit or provide deposit insurance.
- It does not lock in a permanent one-dollar market price on every exchange.
- It does not ensure that funding is always positive or that futures basis always benefits the short side.
- It does not remove counterparty, custody, oracle, blockchain or operational risk.
Where the potential yield comes from
Ethena’s FAQ identifies three protocol-level revenue sources. They are market-dependent cash flows, not a fixed coupon. The protocol can use revenue to support its system and, where permitted, distribute rewards through staking.
| Revenue source | How it works | Favorable condition | Adverse condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staked-ETH yield | Some backing assets may be staked or liquid-staked, producing network staking rewards. | Validator rewards and the value of the staked position remain available to the protocol. | Slashing, a liquid-staking depeg, smart-contract failure or withdrawal delays can reduce value or availability. |
| Perpetual-futures funding | Perpetual contracts exchange periodic funding payments between long and short traders. | When market positioning makes shorts the receiving side, the hedge can earn funding. | When positioning reverses, shorts pay funding. Extended negative funding can consume revenue and reserves. |
| Dated-futures basis | The strategy may capture the difference between an asset’s spot price and its futures price as the contract approaches expiry. | A favorable basis can produce income when the position is opened and settled as planned. | Basis can narrow, reverse or become difficult to trade during stressed markets. |
| Liquid-stablecoin rewards | Stablecoins held by the protocol may earn returns through approved venues or arrangements. | The arrangement continues to pay and the stablecoin remains liquid and solvent. | Rates can fall, access can be interrupted, or a stablecoin or counterparty can fail. |
Funding is a transfer between traders, so it reflects market demand rather than an interest rate set by Ethena. Dated-futures basis is likewise a trading spread, not risk-free income. A high rate in one period can disappear or become negative in another. Neither the revenue list nor a historical APY establishes what a holder will earn now.

USDe and sUSDe are different tokens
Ethena’s terms say USDe itself does not generate interest or a return for holders. The staking asset is sUSDe. When an eligible user stakes USDe, rewards accrue inside the staking contract and are reflected in the value of sUSDe rather than paid as a separate guaranteed interest payment.
| Feature | USDe | sUSDe |
|---|---|---|
| Yield entitlement | No holder interest or return under Ethena’s terms. | Value may rise as permitted protocol rewards accrue in the staking contract. |
| Main exposure | Exposure to the synthetic-dollar system, its collateral, hedges and market liquidity. | The same underlying system plus staking-contract and withdrawal mechanics. |
| How to obtain | Hold, acquire or mint where Ethena allows it. | Stake USDe through the permitted staking workflow. |
| Unstaking | Not applicable. | The staking guide describes a seven-day cooldown after unstaking. |
| Eligibility | Access, minting and redemption depend on current terms and checks. | Only users in permitted jurisdictions can use the staking workflow. |
The staking guide’s linked eligibility notice excludes people habitually resident or registered in the European Union or European Economic Area. Jurisdiction rules can change, so a user should read the current terms and access notices rather than rely on an old explanation or a third-party interface.

- Confirm that your jurisdiction and account satisfy the current eligibility and identity requirements.
- Review the staking contract, conversion mechanics, fees and the stated cooldown before committing USDe.
- Stake only the amount you can leave unavailable during the seven-day cooldown described by the guide.
- Track the value of sUSDe, not a promised APY. Its value depends on rewards actually accruing and on the market value and liquidity of the token.
Risks that can reduce value or yield
1. Negative funding and changing basis
The largest economic risk is that the hedge starts costing money. If traders demand leveraged long exposure, shorts may pay funding. A prolonged negative-funding period can reduce protocol revenue, draw down a reserve fund and weaken confidence in USDe. The SEC-filed risk disclosure expressly warns that sustained negative funding could deplete reserves.
Dated futures add basis risk. The futures price can move relative to spot in ways that reduce the expected spread, and stressed markets can make positions expensive or impossible to close at modeled prices. A strategy that earns in a calm, bullish market may lose money when positioning and liquidity reverse.
2. Collateral depegs and liquidations
Crypto collateral and liquid-staked tokens can trade below their reference value. If collateral falls quickly, an exchange may liquidate a short position or require more margin. Liquidation crystallizes losses instead of allowing the hedge to be held until prices normalize. A protocol reserve can absorb some losses only while it has sufficient assets and liquidity; it is not an unlimited guarantee.

3. Custody and operational counterparties
Ethena describes using off-exchange settlement providers that hold assets and facilitate delegation to trading venues. Keeping collateral with such providers can reduce some exchange-specific exposure, but it creates reliance on the provider’s controls, solvency, legal position and ability to process instructions. A failure, delay, dispute or operational outage can prevent timely hedging, settlement or withdrawal.

4. Exchange, oracle and order-book risk
Derivatives venues have their own margin systems, oracle inputs, collateral rules and order books. A venue can mark positions at prices that differ from other markets, pause withdrawals or liquidate accounts during a disorderly move. The protocol’s design cannot force every venue to use the same price or apply the same collateral methodology.
5. USDe can trade below or above one dollar
Ethena’s terms do not guarantee that USDe will trade at exactly one dollar on third-party platforms. They also state that reserves could fall below one dollar of notional value per USDe. Secondary-market price therefore depends on available liquidity, buyer confidence, redemption access and the functioning of the venues where a holder sells.
6. Direct redemption is limited
Only a Mint User who has completed the required checks can redeem directly with Ethena BVI under the terms. An ordinary holder would need to qualify and onboard as a Mint User to use that route. Someone who cannot redeem directly may have to sell through a decentralized or centralized market, where the price can be below the intended value and liquidity can disappear during stress.
7. Smart-contract, blockchain and cyber risk
Ethena publishes audits and risk analyses as part of its security program, but an audit is a review at a particular point in time. It cannot guarantee that later code changes, integrations, blockchains or operational processes are free of vulnerabilities. The terms warn that technical failures, cyberattacks, blockchain disruption and chain forks can delay or prevent transactions and services.

8. Irreversible transfers and key loss
On-chain transfers generally cannot be reversed. Sending USDe or sUSDe to the wrong address, losing a private key or signing a malicious transaction can make assets inaccessible. The terms also state that these tokens are not protected by deposit-insurance schemes such as FDIC or SIPC.
9. Regulatory and access changes
Legislation, enforcement decisions and jurisdictional rules can change who may mint, redeem or stake. Ethena’s terms reserve rights to suspend or delay certain services in specified circumstances. A token that is available in one country may be restricted in another, and a previously available staking route may close to new users.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happened during the October 10, 2025 market disruption
The event is a useful test of the difference between a protocol’s intended design and the price displayed on one venue. In a 2026 report, the European Securities and Markets Authority described USDe trading at USD 0.65 on Binance during the broad crypto-market disruption of October 10, 2025.
A later SEC-filed disclosure said the deepest dislocation was concentrated on a particular venue and was associated substantially with venue-specific pricing, oracle and collateral-risk controls. That filing reported no interruption of Ethena minting or redemption and no evidence of reserve impairment in its post-event analysis.

The exchange print demonstrates that a holder can face a severe temporary market discount. The filing’s analysis addresses the protocol’s reserves and operations during that episode. Neither finding proves that USDe’s reserves failed, and neither guarantees that a future venue-specific or market-wide dislocation cannot occur.
How to assess USDe before holding or staking
- Identify the token. Decide whether you are holding USDe or taking additional staking-contract exposure through sUSDe.
- Check live terms. Confirm current jurisdiction eligibility, minting and redemption rules, cooldowns, fees and any identity checks.
- Examine the revenue environment. Funding, basis, staking rewards and stablecoin rewards are variable. Do not treat an advertised or historical APY as a promise.
- Assess exit liquidity. Determine where you would sell if direct redemption is unavailable and how much slippage a stressed market could create.
- Understand custody. Know which wallets, settlement providers, exchanges and smart contracts stand between you and the assets.
- Protect transaction access. Verify every address, secure private keys and remember that a hardware wallet can protect keys but cannot prevent depegs, contract failures, exchange losses or restricted redemption.
- Separate protocol claims from guarantees. Audits, attestations and risk controls describe work performed or mechanisms intended to reduce risk; they do not eliminate loss scenarios.
Figures that are not established by the available documentation
No verified live USDe APY, current reserve-fund balance or current percentage breakdown of reserve assets is established here. Ethena’s published revenue mechanisms explain how rewards may arise, but they do not provide a current earnings quote. Those figures can change quickly and should be checked in current official materials before making a decision.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: USDe may generate protocol revenue when staking yield, funding or futures basis and stablecoin rewards are favorable. sUSDe can give eligible users exposure to those rewards, while USDe itself does not pay holder interest. The same structure leaves holders exposed to derivatives losses, collateral and custody failures, venue-specific pricing, restricted redemption, technical faults and regulatory change.
