Esports teams can be founded by players, backed by investors, acquired by a controlling owner, or operated within a sports club or corporation. Ownership does not always mean day-to-day control: founders may keep executive roles after an investment, while game publishers can set the terms for league participation and related payments. To understand who owns a team—and whether it can make money—separate its equity, leadership, league rights, and revenue.
Who can own an esports team?
There is no single ownership template. Common patterns include founders building an organization and later selling a stake, an investor forming or acquiring a team, a traditional sports club adding an esports division, or a corporation running esports operations alongside other businesses. These are broad patterns, not a complete legal taxonomy; the ownership structure and rights depend on the organization and its agreements.

A team can begin with players or founders who establish the brand, recruit talent, and run the business. As the organization grows, it may seek outside capital or commercial support without replacing those founders. A funding announcement alone does not reveal the exact equity split, voting rights, or who can appoint executives.

Investors and controlling owners
An investor may acquire a minority stake, take a controlling interest, or help create a new organization. The word “invested” does not by itself say which arrangement applies. A controlling owner can set governance or leadership direction while founders retain ownership and operational jobs.
Sports clubs and corporations
A sports club or corporation may establish esports as a division, use an existing brand to enter the market, or invest in a separate team. In such cases, the esports operation can draw on the parent organization’s name, commercial relationships, or internal capabilities. The precise legal boundary between parent and team is organization-specific.
How can founders stay involved after an investment?
Equity ownership, governance control, and daily management are separate questions. A transaction can transfer control without removing founders as shareholders or executives.
For example, aXiomatic announced in 2016 that it had bought a controlling interest in Team Liquid, while founders Steve Arhancet and Victor Goossens would remain owners and continue as co-CEOs. The announcement described an investor group spanning sports, media, technology, and investment. When evaluating a particular team, distinguish three questions:

- Who owns equity? Identify shareholders or owners, where that information is public.
- Who has control? Look for governance, voting, or appointment rights; a headline may not disclose them.
- Who runs the organization? Founders or hired executives may manage operations regardless of who holds control.
Public announcements often omit detailed cap tables and contractual rights. Do not infer those details from “partnered with,” “backed by,” or “acquired” without more specific disclosure.
What does a strategic partner contribute?
A strategic partner may provide more than capital. Depending on the deal, it can contribute business management, brand relationships, audience development, venues, technology, content production, media access, or distribution. aXiomatic describes its approach as connecting publishers, teams, and service providers through investments, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships: aXiomatic.
A 2017 announcement by the New York Yankees and Vision Esports described a planned contribution of marketing, sales, and partnership expertise. The parties said they would collaborate across advertising, sponsorships, media and broadcast rights, merchandise, tickets, naming rights, and content. That is evidence of what they announced at the time, not confirmation that the arrangement or its results remain current. See the Yankees’ 2017 announcement.
Capital can help fund operations, but specialist commercial skills or access to an audience may matter just as much. A useful partnership needs clear alignment about objectives and what each side will contribute. In a 2026 interview, Astralis co-founder Jakob Kristensen described valuable partnership as involving “a mutual understanding of what success looks like and an approach and desire to bring value to the community.” That is his perspective, not a universal test or a contract term: Zero1Gaming’s interview.
Do team owners own a spot in the league?
Not necessarily. A league place or partnership is governed by the game publisher’s rules and the specific league agreement. Publishers can determine entry criteria, obligations, payments, and revenue arrangements. Owning a team does not automatically confer a transferable or permanent league slot.

Riot’s League of Legends model, as described by Riot
Riot says its formal League of Legends partnership model began in 2017. In Riot’s account, teams paid about $10 million to participate and received a share of league revenue. Riot also says the model required significant capital, while player salaries grew faster than revenue and depleted cash reserves. The figure and terms describe Riot’s account of that model; they are not current prices or general esports norms.

In a separate 2017 interview, Riot executives discussed a proposed $10 million franchise fee for the planned 2018 North American LCS, with 32.5% of overall revenues allocated to teams and 35% to players. Those were historical plan figures, not current terms. The interview also described evaluation of operations, revenue streams, cost controls, player support, and fan engagement—not simply an ability to pay a fee. See ESPN’s 2017 interview.
Riot’s VCT model, as described by Riot
Riot says VCT partner teams do not pay Riot directly to join. Instead, teams maintain their place through activities such as marketing, broadcast content, fan activation, and player support. Riot describes payments to partner teams as a fixed annual stipend, a percentage of digital sales for esports content, prize pools for participation in international competitions, and additional incentives for certain marketing activity. These are Riot’s descriptions of its own model at the time of publication, not terms that apply across games or that should be assumed unchanged.

Potential revenue channels include sponsorships and advertising, publisher revenue shares or digital-content sales, media and broadcast rights, merchandise, tickets, original content, and tournament prizes. Which channels exist, and how dependable they are, depends on the league, contract, audience, and team’s commercial execution. A possible revenue source is not a guarantee of earnings.

Prize money is especially easy to misread. S&P Global notes that total prize money does not tell the whole story of a team’s business and that teams differ substantially in tournament participation. Its prize-money analysis covers 2018–2022, so it should not be treated as a current ranking or a measure of present value. The $18 million prize it cites for The International 2021 was a tournament prize, not team operating revenue or an owner’s return.
Revenue is money coming in; profit is what remains after costs. Player salaries, staff, facilities, travel, production, marketing, and other operating expenses can consume revenue. Riot’s account of salaries outpacing revenue in its League of Legends model is a concrete example of why outside investment or league access does not, on its own, prove financial sustainability.
PwC argues that franchise structures can reduce reliance on tournament wins and prize money and may support content or lifestyle-brand strategies. That possibility does not establish that an individual team is profitable: outcomes depend on its specific league terms, audience, sales, costs, and market conditions. See PwC’s esports analysis.
How to compare two team ownership arrangements
Use the same questions for each organization, and separate what is publicly established from what is not:
- Control and governance: Who holds equity? Who can appoint leadership or make major decisions? Do founders retain an executive role?
- League access: Is the team in a league partnership? Who sets admission rules, obligations, and payment terms, and can those terms change?
- Capital commitments: What investment, participation fees, or player-development spending are required, and when?
- Revenue mix and predictability: Which income streams are contractual, performance-linked, variable, or not disclosed?
- Operating resources: Does the investor bring relevant sales expertise, distribution, facilities, media capability, or brand relationships?
- Cost discipline and player support: Can the organization fund players and operations if results or income fall short?
For any named team, date the ownership claim and check current company filings or official announcements. Transactions, league agreements, and participation terms can change; historical examples show how arrangements work, not what a team’s current cap table or league deal must be.
