England youth squads are chosen by age-group head coaches for specific camps, fixtures and competitions—not from one permanent national roster. The Football Association (FA) publishes the selected players, but its public announcements do not explain a single scoring formula for every team. Captains are named within individual teams; documented examples show players captaining repeatedly and across age groups, but no universal appointment policy is published.
How England youth squads are selected
England’s national-team pathway is organised by age group and season. For the 2026–27 season, the FA announced coaching line-ups for the men’s MU15–MU21 teams. The age groups have different competition and preparation schedules: for example, the MU20s compete in the U20 Euro Elite League, while MU17 and MU19 teams prepare for UEFA qualifying campaigns. These arrangements are seasonal and can change. The FA’s 2026–27 coaching announcement gives the current men’s structure.

Squads are named for particular windows
A squad announcement applies to the camp, fixtures or tournament it describes. In March 2026, for example, the FA announced squads for MU17, MU18, MU19 and MU20 in connection with their upcoming fixtures. Its announcements identify the head coach and selected players, often grouped by position and club, and may report withdrawals or replacements. They are snapshots for that window, not standing rosters. The FA youth hub carries youth-team news, fixtures, results and features; a March 2026 announcement illustrates how selections are communicated.
There is no complete public selection formula
Published squad lists show who was selected, not the full evaluation behind each decision. The announcements reviewed do not provide a universal scoring rubric or spell out every scouting observation, eligibility check, club discussion or comparison. That is a limit of the public information, not proof that the FA has no internal criteria. So the practical answer to “How do you get selected for an England youth football team?” is that players are identified and considered within the relevant age-group pathway, while the exact decision process is not fully disclosed in these sources.

How players may be identified
The FA has described identification routes beyond a single conventional setting, though the documented example is specifically for girls’ football and should not be treated as a process applying to every team.
Girls’ pathway: Discover My Talent
The FA’s Discover My Talent programme aims to identify female players regardless of geographical location, background or community. Referrals can come from grassroots clubs, schools, community settings and Emerging Talent Centres; players identified through the programme could be considered for England U15–U17 squads. The FA’s April 2023 report recorded 356 players identified as a talent of interest and 75 referred players then being considered for U15–U17 squad selection. These are figures reported in 2023, not current totals. The FA’s programme report describes the initiative and those figures.

Who chooses the captain?
The available examples support describing particular appointments, not claiming a fixed England-wide rule. The sources reviewed do not establish that captains are chosen by seniority, number of caps, a player vote, personality tests or a standard leadership framework.

The FA’s profile of Taylor Harwood-Bellis says he represented and often captained England at MU16, MU17, MU19 and MU21 level. He also captained the MU21s when they won the 2023 UEFA U21 EURO. That record shows one player serving as captain at several age groups; it does not explain the coaches’ selection criteria. The FA’s Harwood-Bellis profile records his England career.

Repeated captaincy can happen within one team
In a 2025 tournament feature, MU17 defender Malachi Hardy described Seth Ridgeon as someone who had captained the team “quite a bit.” This supports saying Ridgeon had captained that side repeatedly, but it is a player’s account rather than an official statement of policy. The FA feature provides the context.

Because squads are announced for particular windows and coaching arrangements can change by season, check the FA youth hub for current announcements rather than relying on an older squad list. A published selection confirms who was named for that window; it does not, by itself, reveal every factor behind the decision or a general captain-selection policy.
