EDR monitors and helps respond to activity on an endpoint; browser security reduces risks inside the browser; and a secure web gateway (SWG) applies policy to web traffic routed through it. They protect different control points, so one does not automatically replace the others.
How do EDR, browser security, and secure web gateways differ?
| Control | Primary enforcement point | Main question it answers | Coverage caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDR | Endpoint agent or platform and its management plane | What is happening on this device, and can responders investigate or contain it? | Telemetry, automated response, supported platforms, and packaging vary by product. CISA’s capability model is not a universal product feature list. |
| Browser security | Browser application, runtime, and browser policy | Can the browser reduce exposure to malicious sites, downloads, phishing, or exploitation? | Browser-specific protections do not necessarily cover other browsers or nonbrowser applications. |
| SWG | Network or cloud gateway handling forwarded web traffic | Which destinations or content should users or devices reach, and what web traffic policy applies? | Coverage depends on traffic routing and inspection configuration; encrypted traffic may reveal less without TLS inspection. |
CISA describes EDR as providing “cybersecurity monitoring and control of endpoint devices,” covering detection of endpoint events and incidents through response and follow-up analysis (CISA CDM Technical Capabilities Volume 2, version 2.5). Browser controls operate at a different point: the browser can block or limit risky web activity before or during a session. An SWG, by contrast, enforces policy on web traffic that reaches the gateway.
What does an EDR tool protect?
EDR is endpoint-centered. Its purpose is to collect and use activity from a device to identify suspicious behavior, support investigation, and enable response. Depending on the product, response may include actions such as isolating a device or stopping a process; do not assume every EDR product supports the same actions or platforms.
That endpoint view can help security teams understand activity beyond a single web session. It does not mean that EDR automatically provides the same destination filtering, browser hardening, or web-traffic inspection as a dedicated browser control or SWG.

What does browser security protect?
Browser security applies within the browser and can include defenses against phishing, malicious downloads, and browser exploitation. The exact protections depend on the browser, its version, configuration, and organizational policy.
For example, Microsoft says Edge enhanced security mode disables just-in-time JavaScript compilation on unfamiliar sites and adds operating-system protections. Microsoft’s guidance applies to Edge version 111 or later; the mode’s behavior and policy options should be checked against the deployed version and configuration (Microsoft Edge security guidance).
Browser-specific features do not automatically cover traffic from another browser or a nonbrowser app. There are exceptions where endpoint controls extend web protection more broadly: Microsoft Defender Network Protection, for example, can extend protection to supported third-party browsers and nonbrowser applications, subject to configuration and protocol limitations (Microsoft Defender Network Protection).

What does a secure web gateway do?
An SWG governs web traffic that is actually routed through it. It can apply destination or category rules and other context-aware policy. Microsoft describes Entra Internet Access as “an identity-centric Secure Web Gateway (SWG) solution for Software as a Service (SaaS) applications and other Internet traffic” (Microsoft Entra Internet Access overview).
A gateway’s protection is bounded by traffic coverage: devices, apps, or connections that bypass the gateway may not receive its policy. Identity and device context can inform decisions where the service supports and is configured to use them, but an SWG does not by itself provide the same endpoint event history and response capability as EDR.
Encryption changes gateway visibility
HTTPS protects content in transit, which affects what a gateway can inspect. Microsoft documents that Entra Internet Access filtering uses the URL for unencrypted HTTP and the server name indication (SNI) for HTTPS. TLS inspection can enable more detailed inspection, but the available visibility depends on configuration. That distinction matters when evaluating any SWG: do not assume every product sees the same details of encrypted sessions.

Can one of these controls replace another?
Not as a general rule. They overlap in some web-related defenses, but their primary visibility and enforcement points differ. An endpoint product may block some web threats; a browser can prevent risky browser activity; and a gateway can restrict routed web access. Those overlaps do not establish equivalent coverage or response.
NIST places SWG among network and point-security functions in its enterprise network landscape, alongside areas such as cloud services access security and SASE. This is useful architecture context rather than a guarantee that vendors implement identical categories or features (NIST SP 800-215).

These questions describe different documented capabilities, not a vendor ranking. Vendor features and supported platforms can change; confirm current documentation and the organization’s tenant and device configuration before deciding.
How these controls fit together
Organizations often layer EDR, browser protections, and an SWG because each sees a different part of activity. EDR supplies endpoint monitoring and response; browser security focuses on the browser session; and an SWG applies web policy to traffic sent through it. The right combination depends on the organization’s threat model, traffic paths, product capabilities, and operational needs—not on assuming that any single category covers the others.
