How Edge Extension Updates and Permissions Affect Your Privacy

Microsoft Edge reveals limited identifying information when it checks for extension updates, but an installed extension may have much broader access to your browsing activity. Edge sends an installed-extension list to its update service. Requests for extensions from the Chrome Web Store include the extension ID, version, and information about Edge. Externally installed extensions use an update URL that Edge checks every few hours; those specific manifest requests omit cookies. Privacy risk is usually determined less by the update check than by the permissions you grant, the sites an extension can read or change, its data practices, and whether an administrator controls it.

You can reduce exposure by reviewing each extension in Settings and more > Extensions > Manage extensions, limiting site access where Edge allows it, removing extensions you no longer need, and reading the developer’s privacy policy before enabling an extension.

What Edge sends when it checks extension updates

Extension updates are network requests, so Edge must identify what is installed and determine whether a newer package is available. The exact information and destination depend on where the extension came from. Microsoft documents several update paths rather than one universal request format.

Edge Add-ons and the Edge update service

Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation says extensions are updated through the Microsoft Edge update service and that Edge sends the service a list of installed extensions. That list allows the service to determine which extension packages and versions may need attention. The documented statement concerns the update service; it does not mean that every web request made by an extension, or every extension’s own telemetry, is sent to Microsoft.

Extensions from the Chrome Web Store

For an extension installed from the Chrome Web Store, regular update requests go to that store. Microsoft says the request includes the extension identifier, the extension version, and information about Microsoft Edge. These fields are enough to associate a request with a particular extension installation and browser environment, even though they are not a complete record of the pages you visit.

Externally installed extensions

An extension distributed outside the Edge Add-ons and Chrome Web Store paths can specify an update_url in its installation metadata. Microsoft says Edge checks such an endpoint every few hours. The update endpoint can receive extension ID and version parameters. “Every few hours” is the cadence documented for this externally installed path, not a promise that all extensions or stores use the same interval.

Microsoft’s developer documentation gives a specific privacy safeguard for these automatic update manifest requests:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“In order to maintain user privacy, Microsoft Edge doesn’t send any Cookie headers with auto-update manifest requests, and ignores any Set-Cookie headers in the responses to those requests.”

This protection applies to externally installed extension auto-update manifest requests. It should not be generalized to every request made by an extension, every store request, or the extension’s normal operation on websites.

Why update checks are both useful and revealing

Automatic updating can deliver security fixes, bug fixes, performance changes, and new features without requiring you to reinstall an extension. Leaving an old vulnerable build in place can be a greater practical risk than allowing a routine update check.

At the same time, an update service or store can learn that a particular extension and version is installed on an Edge browser. The request therefore exposes installation metadata. It is different from granting the extension permission to inspect page content: the update request identifies software, while host permissions can expose the information on websites you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store and update operators also control the delivery path. For Edge Add-ons, Microsoft says the update mechanism is managed by the store and extension publishers do not control it directly. You still need to decide whether you trust the publisher, because a legitimate automatic update can change features or requested access. When a store displays release information or a changed permission request, review it before continuing to use the extension.

How extension permissions work

Permissions are capability grants. They describe what an extension is technically allowed to do; they are not a safety score and do not prove that an extension is malicious or trustworthy. Compare each requested capability with the job the extension claims to perform.

Host permissions: websites and page content

Host permissions specify which webpages an extension may view or modify. A narrowly scoped extension might need one named site. A broad pattern can cover many domains, and “all sites” access can expose page text, forms, account details, shopping activity, and other information visible in those pages. An extension with permission to change pages can also inject scripts, alter what you see, or modify page behavior.

Microsoft’s Edge extensions guidance identifies blanket access to all sites and their content as a privacy and security risk. Broad access is a warning to investigate, not proof of misuse. A translation, accessibility, or page-cleanup tool may need substantial host access, while a simple new-tab or calculator extension generally has less reason to read unrelated pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Device permissions: capabilities beyond webpages

Microsoft also distinguishes device permissions. Examples include access to USB devices, viewing or storing screen content, and communicating with native programs. These capabilities can reach beyond ordinary webpage text and may affect peripherals, local data, or software installed on the device.

Ask two questions for every permission: What exact feature requires it? and What information could it expose if the extension were compromised or its publisher changed? If the developer cannot explain the connection in plain language, choose a narrower alternative or do not install it.

How to inspect and reduce an extension’s access

Review the installed-extension list

  1. Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu) in Edge.
  2. Select Extensions, then Manage extensions.
  3. Read the name, publisher, enabled status, and permissions shown for each installed extension.
  4. Open the extension’s details and read its privacy policy. Microsoft explicitly recommends checking the developer’s policy before enabling an extension.
  5. Remove extensions you no longer need instead of leaving them disabled indefinitely. An unneeded extension is still software that can receive updates and may regain access if re-enabled.

Restrict site access

On an extension’s details page, use Edge’s site-access control to restrict where it can run. Choose the least-permissive option that still supports the feature: a named site, an interaction-only option, or another limited choice presented by your Edge version. Test the extension after restricting access; functions that depend on reading every page may stop working by design.

Site controls limit user-installed extensions on the current site. They are not a universal privacy switch, because administrator-installed extensions are exempt from this user setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove access by uninstalling

If you cannot justify an extension’s permissions, uninstall it from the Manage extensions page. Removing it stops that extension from operating in Edge and eliminates its future update checks from that installation. If you later need the feature, reassess the current version and policy rather than automatically restoring an old copy.

Controlling extensions from other stores

Edge includes a setting named Allow extensions from other stores in Manage extensions. Turning it off prevents Edge from using extensions obtained from stores other than Edge Add-ons. Microsoft warns that extensions from those other stores are uninstalled when the setting is turned off, so save any settings or data the extension stores before changing it.

This setting changes the installation source and update relationship; it does not by itself evaluate whether an extension’s permissions are appropriate. An extension from Edge Add-ons can still request broad host or device access, while an externally installed extension has its own documented update path and privacy considerations.

Managed work and school devices behave differently

If Edge is managed by an employer, school, or other administrator, your site-access choice may not control every extension. Microsoft says policy-installed extensions, including force-installed extensions, continue to run on a site regardless of the user’s selection. Edge displays an informational tooltip when this exception applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a managed device, ask IT which extensions were installed by policy, what sites they can access, and what data-handling rules apply. Do not assume that disabling a site toggle removes administrator-granted access.

What administrators can block

Administrators can use the ExtensionSettings policy to block specific permissions and restrict interaction with named hosts. Restrictions can cover cookie access and web-request modifications. If a required permission is blocked, an extension may fail to install or load. If an optional permission is blocked, Edge can install the extension while declining that permission at runtime.

These controls are enterprise administration features, not settings available to every unmanaged user. A personal Edge installation cannot override a permission that an administrator has deliberately granted to a force-installed extension.

What Edge Add-ons policies establish—and what they do not

Microsoft’s Edge Add-ons developer policies require extensions to request only permissions necessary for their declared functionality, provide clear data-handling disclosures, avoid collecting or tracking sensitive information without clear consent, and encrypt user-sensitive data with appropriate mechanisms. Those are marketplace requirements, not a guarantee that every extension has been independently audited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Manifest V3 guidance also says Edge Add-ons disallows remotely hosted code so submitted code can be validated. The same guidance warns that broad runtime host permissions carry privacy and security risk. These statements apply to the Edge Add-ons policy and validation context; software obtained through another distribution channel may not be covered identically.

Use policy compliance as one input, not as a substitute for reading the individual extension’s permissions, privacy policy, publisher history, and update source.

A practical privacy review before installing an extension

  1. Define the feature. Write down the specific task you need, such as changing pages on one site or managing downloads.
  2. Match permissions to that task. Reject permissions that have no clear connection to the feature, especially all-sites access, screen capture, native-program communication, or USB access.
  3. Identify the distribution source. Note whether the extension comes from Edge Add-ons, the Chrome Web Store, or an external update URL. The source determines which documented update path applies.
  4. Read the privacy policy. Look for what data is collected, why it is collected, whether it is shared, how long it is retained, and how you can delete it.
  5. Start with limited site access. Grant access only to required sites or when you actively click the extension, if Edge offers that choice.
  6. Recheck after updates. A security fix can be beneficial, but a major feature change may alter permissions or data practices.
  7. Remove unused extensions. Reduce the number of publishers and update services that can interact with your browser.

How to compare two extensions that do the same job

Use the same criteria for both candidates rather than choosing solely on ratings or download counts.

Comparison point Questions to ask Why it matters
Sites and data Which domains can the extension read or modify? Can it see forms, page text, cookies, screens, or local resources? Host and device permissions define the exposure surface.
Functional necessity Does each permission directly support the advertised feature? Unnecessary access increases potential impact without adding value.
Privacy disclosure Does the developer explain collection, sharing, retention, and deletion? A clear policy lets you judge data practices before installation.
Update source Which store or update URL supplies new versions, and what information does that path receive? Update channels have different documented request details and cadence.
User or administrator control Can you change site access, or is the extension installed by policy? Policy-installed extensions can ignore the user’s site toggle.

Common privacy questions and fixes

“Does an update check reveal every website I visit?”

The documented update information is an installed-extension list, and Chrome Web Store requests include extension ID, version, and Edge information. That is not the same as sending a browsing-history list. However, the extension itself may read websites if its host permissions allow it, so inspect those permissions separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Does the no-cookie rule protect normal extension activity?”

No. Microsoft’s no-Cookie-header and ignored-Set-Cookie behavior is scoped to externally installed extension auto-update manifest requests. It does not govern the extension’s ordinary requests, scripts, or access to sites.

“Why is an extension still running after I turned off site access?”

First check whether it was installed by an administrator. Policy-installed extensions are unaffected by the user-facing site toggle. On a personal device, verify that you changed the control for the correct extension and site, then reload the page or restart Edge. If the feature requires broader access, limiting it may intentionally disable part of the extension.

“What should I do when an extension will not install after an administrator change?”

An administrator may have blocked a required permission through ExtensionSettings. Required-permission blocks can prevent installation or loading; optional-permission blocks allow installation while Edge declines that capability. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

The Bottom Line

Edge’s update checks disclose installation metadata, while permissions determine what an extension can access on your device and the web. Keep automatic security updates enabled when you trust the source, but review every permission, limit site access, remove unnecessary extensions, and ask an administrator about policy-installed software that your personal settings cannot restrict.
