How Ecologists Map Connections Between Trees, Fungi, and Wildlife

Ecologists combine spatial mapping, DNA identification, acoustic and camera monitoring, isotope chemistry, and statistical network analysis to describe forest relationships. A spatial map answers where organisms or symbiosis types occur; a network diagram answers which entities are linked. Those links may represent an observed host association, a repeated co-occurrence, a modeled trophic relationship, or experimentally measured resource transfer. They are not interchangeable, and an inferred connection is not automatically proof that organisms exchange nutrients or cause one another’s distribution.

Two different products: spatial maps and network diagrams

The first design decision is whether the question is geographic or relational. Ecologists may produce both products from one project, but each uses different data and supports different conclusions.

Product What it shows Typical evidence What it cannot establish by itself
Spatial map Where a species, symbiosis type, genotype, or detection occurs Forest inventory plots, root samples, environmental predictors, or georeferenced wildlife detections A direct interaction or transfer between organisms at every mapped location
Network diagram Nodes connected by defined links Host associations, co-occurrence, inferred trophic relationships, or measured transfer That every link is causal, physical, or a resource exchange

A rigorous paper labels the meaning of every node and edge. “Tree–fungus link” could mean fungal DNA was found on a root tip, the two taxa co-occurred more often than expected, or a tracer experiment measured carbon movement. These are different evidence classes and should not be drawn as though they were equivalent.

How broad maps estimate tree–fungus symbiosis

For questions covering continents or the whole planet, researchers cannot sample every root. They combine forest inventory observations with environmental predictors and statistical models. One 2019 Nature study assembled more than 1.1 million forest inventory plots representing more than 28,000 tree species. The authors modeled how climate-related decomposition conditions and other environmental variables corresponded to dominant forest-tree symbiosis types, producing a spatially explicit global map.

That study estimated that ectomycorrhizal trees make up approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. The figure is the authors’ model-based estimate, not a direct census of every stem. Likewise, a colored region on a global map represents a predicted distribution under the study’s data and assumptions; it does not mean each individual tree in that region was inspected or that every local association is identical.

What this scale is good for

  • Comparing likely symbiosis patterns with climate, soil, or decomposition conditions.
  • Identifying broad regions where a symbiosis type is predicted to dominate.
  • Generating hypotheses for targeted field sampling.

What it leaves unresolved

  • Which fungal species are attached to a particular tree.
  • Whether a predicted association is active in a specific season or microhabitat.
  • Whether carbon, nitrogen, water, or other resources move between particular partners.

How field teams map local tree–fungus associations

At stand or plot scale, ecologists can collect fine mycorrhizal root tips, identify both partners genetically, and connect their genotypes. In a Douglas-fir study, researchers used microsatellite DNA markers to identify tree and fungal genotypes isolated from mycorrhizas and compared the tree genotypes with reference bole samples. The resulting network shows which sampled tree genotypes were associated with which sampled fungal genotypes in the collected roots; the study is described in the Journal of Ecology.

A typical local workflow is:

  1. Define the sampling frame. Mark plots, tree locations, soil conditions, and sampling dates so every root tip has a geographic and host context.
  2. Collect and preserve roots. Examine fine roots for mycorrhizal structures, keep samples separate by host and location, and record which material was actually analyzed.
  3. Extract and identify DNA. Genotype the tree tissue and fungal tissue with suitable markers. Reference bole samples can link a root-associated tree genotype to an above-ground individual.
  4. Create the data table. Each tree genotype and fungal genotype becomes a node; a sampled association becomes an edge with metadata such as plot, host, date, and confidence.
  5. Map and analyze. Plot edges geographically and calculate network properties such as the number of partners, specialization, or clustering, while retaining the original sample boundaries.

Finding fungal DNA on a root establishes an identified association in the sampled material. It does not, without a transfer measurement, demonstrate that the fungus supplied nutrients to that tree or moved resources to another tree.

Why the same associations can produce different network views

Network theory changes the emphasis without changing the underlying observations. In a study titled “Application of network theory to potential mycorrhizal networks,” researchers treated trees as nodes and fungi as links in a plant-centered view, then examined plant connections from the fungal perspective; the PubMed record is available at PubMed. The phrase “potential mycorrhizal networks” is important: an inferred pathway is not automatically a demonstrated conduit for carbon or nutrients.

A phytocentric projection asks which trees share fungal partners. A fungal-centric projection asks which plants are connected through each fungus. The choice affects apparent degree, specialization, and centrality. Analysts should state whether an edge means shared partner, direct colonization, statistical association, or measured exchange, and whether multiple observations are independent or repeated samples of the same host.

How ecologists find wildlife and trophic links

Wildlife cannot be surveyed with one universal detector. Environmental DNA (eDNA), passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), and camera traps sample different traces and behaviors, so combining them can reveal a fuller community than any single method.

A British Ecological Society summary of a Scottish rewilding-site study (accessed October 13, 2026) compared eDNA metabarcoding from water, soil, tree-rolling material, and scat with PAM and camera traps. The summary reported 79 vertebrate taxa in total:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method Taxa detected in that Scottish study Primary signal
Passive acoustic monitoring 52 Vocalizations and other recorded sounds
eDNA 44 Genetic traces in sampled water, soil, tree-rolling material, or scat
Camera traps 12 Animals passing through the cameras’ detection area

Water and tree-rolling eDNA samples had the highest richness among the eDNA substrates. Each method also detected unique species. The summary reported that PAM covered birds and bats particularly well, while eDNA covered small mammals well, and that integrating eDNA with PAM produced the most complete trophic network in that study. These counts are site- and study-specific, not universal rankings of method performance. The resource is at the British Ecological Society.

Turning detections into a wildlife network

  1. Standardize sampling effort. Record deployment time for microphones and cameras, collection volume for eDNA, and the number and location of samples.
  2. Identify taxa. Match DNA sequences to a validated reference database, classify acoustic recordings, and verify camera images or video.
  3. Define the edge. An edge might mean two taxa were detected at the same site, a predator and prey were independently observed, or a trophic relationship was supported by additional evidence.
  4. Account for detection probability. A silent animal may be missed by PAM, an animal outside a camera’s field may be missed by cameras, and DNA can persist or move after the organism leaves.
  5. Integrate cautiously. Combine methods only after documenting their different time windows, spatial footprints, and taxonomic biases.

Co-detection at one location is evidence of co-occurrence, not proof that one taxon consumed another or altered its behavior. A trophic edge needs an explicit basis, such as feeding observations, gut-content evidence, isotopes, or a validated model.

How stable isotopes classify fungal nutritional roles

Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios provide chemical evidence about fungal nutrition. A peer-reviewed study summarized by the US Forest Service analyzed isotope values from 813 fungi across 23 sites. Carbon and nitrogen patterns verified collector-based ectomycorrhizal or saprotrophic classifications for more than 91% of samples and supplied probabilistic assignments for 27 fungi whose roles were unknown. The record is available from the US Forest Service.

In a mapping project, isotope data can be attached to fungal nodes as a role or probability rather than used as a geographic edge. For example, a sample might be labeled “ectomycorrhizal, 0.9 probability” or “saprotrophic, verified.” These measurements help classify nutritional strategy; they do not map direct tree-to-tree exchange and do not, by themselves, show that a fungus transferred a resource to a particular host.

How soil-biodiversity networks connect organisms with ecosystem functions

The EcoFINDERS project extended network analysis beyond one host pair. It sampled 76 sites in 11 European countries, spanning five biogeographical zones and three land uses, and applied 14 biological methods to fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, soil fauna, and microbial functions. The 2016 study examined organism connections and relationships with ecosystem functions under different land-use scenarios; its record is in the NERC Open Research Archive.

Within that sampled dataset, forest soils had the highest network density and arable soils the lowest. The biological indicators associated with nutrient-cycling models also varied with the model applied. Those are patterns in the studied sites, not evidence that density alone causes an ecosystem outcome. Network density can reflect sampling design, taxonomic resolution, environmental filtering, and the definition of an edge as well as biological organization.

A complete mapping workflow

1. Start with a falsifiable question

Specify whether the goal is to map distribution, identify partners, estimate co-occurrence, classify function, or test transfer. “Where are ectomycorrhizal forests likely to occur?” requires a different design from “Which fungal genotypes colonize these trees?”

2. Match scale and method

Question Useful data Likely output
Where are symbiosis types distributed? Inventory plots plus environmental predictors Modeled spatial surface with uncertainty
Which partners occur on sampled roots? Root-tip sampling and host/fungal genotyping Local bipartite association network and point map
Which vertebrates use a site? eDNA, PAM, and camera traps Method-specific detections and an integrated occurrence network
What nutritional role does a fungus have? Carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements Class assignment or probability attached to fungal samples
How do soil organisms relate across land uses? Multiple biological assays and ecological network analysis Site-level network metrics and function associations

3. Preserve provenance

Store coordinates, dates, plot identifiers, sample material, sequencing or instrument settings, taxonomic confidence, and missing-detection information. A map without those fields cannot show whether two records are comparable.

4. Separate observation from inference

Use different edge types or layers for observed association, co-occurrence, modeled relationship, and measured transfer. Report uncertainty intervals or assignment probabilities where available, and do not merge unlike edges into one undifferentiated “connection” score.

5. Test robustness

Repeat analyses with alternative detection thresholds, taxonomic resolutions, null models, and sampling-effort corrections. Check whether a prominent hub disappears when a common species or heavily sampled plot is removed.

Common interpretation errors

  • Calling every fungal link a resource-sharing network. Root association or shared fungal identity is not a transfer experiment.
  • Reading a modeled map as a direct census. Global symbiosis surfaces are predictions constrained by inventory and environmental data.
  • Treating co-occurrence as interaction. Two taxa can share habitat without feeding on, helping, or competing with one another.
  • Comparing detector counts without context. The Scottish totals reflect one site, effort, season, and study design.
  • Ignoring undetected species. Absence from a microphone, camera frame, or DNA sample may indicate a detection gap rather than true absence.
  • Confusing network density with ecosystem health. Density is a structural statistic whose meaning depends on the nodes, edges, sampling scheme, and model.

How to read an ecology map or network figure

First inspect the legend: determine whether colors represent taxa, symbiosis classes, probabilities, or environmental predictions. Then read the caption for spatial unit, sampling period, and edge definition. Finally ask whether the figure displays observations, statistical estimates, or experimentally measured processes. A credible interpretation keeps those layers separate and states what remains unknown.
