Short answer: Ervebo is a single-dose, live recombinant vaccine that trains the immune system to recognize Ebola virus (EBOV), the orthoebolavirus species that causes Ebola virus disease in the outbreaks for which the vaccine is licensed. WHO recommends it for outbreak ring vaccination and for preventive vaccination of health-care and frontline workers in areas at risk. In the United States, CDC describes pre-exposure vaccination only for adults in specified occupational groups. This is a controlled public-health or occupational program, not a routine consumer vaccination.
Eligibility depends on the virus species involved, an outbreak team’s contact-tracing decisions, your role and location, age, health status, and the authorization in force where you are. The FDA age indication, WHO outbreak recommendations and CDC occupational criteria are different rules and should not be treated as one universal checklist.

Is there a vaccine against Ebola disease?
Yes, but the word Ebola is often used broadly for several related viruses. As of the World Health Organization’s September 2026 guidance, Ervebo is the only vaccine licensed and WHO-prequalified specifically for disease caused by Ebola virus (EBOV). WHO states that “The Ervebo vaccine is only recommended by WHO for use against Ebola virus disease (EVD).”
| Virus species | Human disease status | Licensed vaccine status as of September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Ebola virus (EBOV) | Causes Ebola virus disease | Ervebo is licensed and WHO-prequalified for EBOV disease |
| Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) | Causes Bundibugyo virus disease | No vaccine has established clinical efficacy; WHO recommends Ervebo only within research protocols during the 2026 outbreak |
| Sudan virus (SUDV) | Causes Sudan virus disease | No licensed vaccine |
| Taï Forest virus (TAFV) | Can cause human disease | No licensed vaccine |
Ervebo also does not protect against other orthoebolavirus species or against orthomarburgviruses, according to the CDC product information. Therefore, being vaccinated is not a blanket guarantee against every virus that people may casually call Ebola.

How Ervebo works
A harmless vaccine virus presents an Ebola target
Ervebo is a replication-competent, live attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) vaccine. Developers use VSV as the vaccine backbone and insert a gene from Ebola virus. The resulting vaccine virus presents an Ebola component to the immune system without containing the complete Ebola virus and without causing Ebola disease.
After the injection, the immune system responds to that Ebola target. It produces antibodies and cellular immune responses that can recognize EBOV if exposure occurs later. Because the vaccine uses a live attenuated vector, it can replicate enough to stimulate immunity, but it is not the disease-causing Ebola virus itself. The exact immune response varies by person, and a response does not mean immediate protection on the day of injection.
Protection is species-specific
The Ebola gene in Ervebo is designed around EBOV. Related species differ enough that protection cannot be assumed. WHO’s current guidance lists EBOV, BDBV, SUDV and TAFV as separate human-disease-causing species; only EBOV has a licensed, WHO-prequalified vaccine. The CDC’s wording is explicit: “ERVEBO does not provide protection against other species of orthoebolaviruses or orthomarburgviruses.”

Who may be offered Ervebo during an Ebola outbreak?
Ring vaccination around a diagnosed case
WHO recommends Ervebo during EBOV outbreaks as part of a ring-vaccination strategy. Public-health teams identify a person with confirmed Ebola disease, list that person’s contacts, and then identify contacts of those contacts. Those groups may be offered vaccination to create a protective ring around transmission chains.

Ring vaccination is an outbreak operation, not a self-referral program. Investigators, laboratories and local health authorities decide who is included, when doses are available and which vaccine is appropriate. A person who believes they were exposed should contact the local public-health authority or outbreak response team rather than trying to obtain the vaccine privately.
Children, including infants
WHO recommends vaccinating ring contacts and contacts of contacts, including children from birth, when an EBOV outbreak response calls for it. The licensed indication covers people aged 12 months and older, so vaccination below 12 months is off-label. In an outbreak, the potential benefit of interrupting transmission can outweigh the uncertainty of using the vaccine outside its licensed age indication; the response team makes that decision with the child’s caregivers.
Health-care and frontline workers before exposure
WHO recommends preventive vaccination for health-care and frontline workers in areas considered at risk of future EBOV outbreaks. This can include staff who diagnose, transport, treat or monitor patients and other workers whose duties place them near potential transmission. National programs determine which roles and locations qualify.

United States occupational eligibility
In the United States, ERVEBO is FDA-approved for people aged 12 months and older, but CDC’s pre-exposure criteria are narrower than that age label. CDC describes vaccination for adults in specified occupational categories, including certain outbreak responders traveling to an active outbreak. The vaccine is held in the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile and made available through CDC rather than marketed as a routine commercial product. The administering program determines whether a worker’s duties and travel meet current criteria; age alone does not create eligibility.
| Situation | Who could be considered | How access is decided |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed EBOV outbreak | Identified contacts and contacts of contacts, potentially from birth | Outbreak investigators and local or national public-health authorities |
| Preventive vaccination in an at-risk area | Health-care and frontline workers with relevant exposure duties | National program, WHO-supported supply route and occupational risk assessment |
| U.S. pre-exposure vaccination | Adults in CDC-specified occupational groups, including eligible responders traveling to an active outbreak | CDC and the responsible occupational or public-health program |
| General consumer request | There is no routine retail eligibility pathway | Ervebo is supplied through controlled public-health or occupational programs |
Can children, pregnant and breastfeeding women be vaccinated with Ervebo?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
WHO says the licensed indication includes pregnant and breastfeeding women during EBOV outbreaks. At the same time, CDC notes that pregnancy studies are insufficient to establish fetal risk. Because Ervebo is live attenuated, live vaccines are generally avoided during pregnancy, but CDC does not treat pregnancy or lactation as automatic exclusions for this vaccine. A clinician and the outbreak team must weigh the person’s exposure risk, the intensity of transmission and the possible benefit of vaccination.
Breastfeeding status likewise requires an individualized decision. A person should disclose pregnancy, possible pregnancy or breastfeeding before vaccination so the responsible clinician can apply the current outbreak protocol.
Infants and young children
The licensed age indication begins at 12 months. WHO may nevertheless include infants from birth in ring vaccination when they are contacts or contacts of contacts during an EBOV outbreak. Vaccination under 12 months is off-label and should occur only under the direction of the response team. Parents should not infer from an outbreak decision that routine infant vaccination is recommended outside that setting.

Allergies, illness and immune compromise
CDC lists a history of severe allergy to a vaccine component, including rice protein, as a contraindication. An acute systemic illness at the scheduled time is also a contraindication; vaccination may be rescheduled after the illness resolves. People with immune compromise need an individualized assessment because safety and effectiveness have not been established for that group. Tell the vaccinator about allergies, immune conditions, current illness, medicines and prior vaccine reactions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does Ervebo take to provide protection?
WHO says a sufficient immune response generally develops within 10 to 14 days. The injection does not immediately protect someone who is already infected or who has just been exposed. During that window, and afterward, recipients must continue all instructions on monitoring, personal protective equipment, contact restrictions and medical evaluation.
What human efficacy evidence shows
During the 2014–2016 Guinea outbreak, a randomized cluster vaccination study gave immediate Ervebo vaccination to 3,775 people who were close contacts of someone diagnosed with Ebola disease and to close contacts of those contacts. According to the CDC product information, no one vaccinated immediately developed Ebola disease 10 or more days after vaccination. That is a result from a defined outbreak study, not a promise that every vaccinated person will be protected in every circumstance.

How long protection lasts
WHO reports that antibodies have been detected for up to five years after vaccination. It is not known whether that antibody level is sufficient to prevent infection throughout that entire period, so the finding should not be presented as five years of proven clinical protection. WHO recommends revaccination for someone at high risk during an outbreak if that person has not received Ervebo within the previous six months.

What changed for Bundibugyo virus disease in 2026?
Bundibugyo virus disease is a separate illness caused by BDBV, not EBOV. In emergency guidance dated 31 August 2026, WHO reviewed animal, immunological and observational findings. Some findings suggest possible cross-protection from Ervebo, but the evidence is insufficient to determine whether the vaccine provides clinically meaningful protection in humans.
For that reason, WHO recommends that Ervebo be used during a Bundibugyo outbreak only within research protocols. The purpose is to generate evidence while continuing proven outbreak-control measures and clearly telling recipients that efficacy is unknown. It would be inaccurate to say that Ervebo prevents Bundibugyo virus disease. Read the full WHO emergency guidance for the current recommendation.
What side effects and precautions should recipients expect?
Common short-term effects
WHO lists injection-site pain, fever and headache as common effects. They are often mild and typically begin within 24 to 48 hours. Ask the vaccination team what symptoms should be reported and where to seek care if a reaction is severe or persistent.
Observation and allergy precautions
CDC advises observing recipients for at least 15 minutes after vaccination because anaphylaxis is possible, although rare. A facility that administers Ervebo should have a plan for recognizing and treating a severe allergic reaction.
Temporary precautions after vaccination
Vaccine-virus RNA can be detected in some bodily fluids for a period after vaccination. CDC describes temporary precautions that include avoiding sharing certain personal items and avoiding open-mouth kissing for two weeks. It also describes avoiding close association with immunocompromised people, pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under one year for up to six weeks. The administering clinician’s current instructions take precedence because advice may be adapted to the person’s circumstances and the program’s protocol.
What vaccination does not replace in an outbreak
Ervebo is one layer of a response. WHO also identifies surveillance and contact tracing, laboratory confirmation, prompt isolation and supportive care, infection-prevention and control procedures, safe burials and community engagement. Vaccinated health-care workers and responders still need the required personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, biosafety procedures and exposure monitoring. Vaccination cannot make unsafe contact with infectious material safe.
How to find out whether you are eligible
- Identify the setting. Determine whether you are a named contact in an EBOV outbreak, a contact of a contact, a health-care or frontline worker in an at-risk area, or a U.S. worker being evaluated for an occupational role.
- Contact the responsible authority. Use the local public-health department, outbreak response team, occupational-health service or CDC-linked program identified by your employer. Do not rely on a general retail pharmacy search.
- Provide complete medical information. Report age, pregnancy or breastfeeding, immune compromise, severe allergies, acute illness, prior Ervebo doses and the date of any previous dose.
- Confirm the virus and protocol. Ask whether the response concerns EBOV or another species. Ervebo’s licensed and WHO-prequalified use is for EBOV; in the 2026 Bundibugyo guidance, use is restricted to research protocols.
- Follow the post-vaccination plan. Complete the observation period, follow temporary contact precautions, keep monitoring for symptoms and continue all infection-control instructions.
For current international recommendations, consult the WHO Ebola vaccines Q&A. For U.S. administration and occupational details, see CDC’s Ebola vaccine administration guidance.
