Ebola is not an airborne infection: you do not catch it simply by standing near or passing someone. The main risk is contact with blood or other body fluids from a sick or deceased person—directly, or through a contaminated object—with the fluid entering broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth. If you may have been exposed during an outbreak, contact a healthcare provider or local public-health authority promptly for instructions.
How Ebola spreads
Ebola viruses can pass from infected animals to people. Human infection can follow close contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other fluids from infected wildlife, including bats and non-human primates. Fruit bats are thought to be natural hosts, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

After a person is infected, the virus can spread when blood or other body fluids from someone who is sick or has died enter another person’s broken skin or mucous membranes, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. Contaminated objects and surfaces can also carry infection. WHO identifies funerals involving direct contact with a body as a possible transmission setting.

Body fluids of concern include blood, urine, feces, saliva, sweat, vomit, breast milk, amniotic fluid, semen, and vaginal fluid. Ebola is not spread through the air like respiratory viruses, and simply being nearby is not enough to transmit it. A person does not transmit Ebola before symptoms begin; according to WHO, people remain infectious while virus is present in their blood. See the CDC’s Ebola Disease Basics and WHO’s Ebola disease questions and answers.

Who is at greater risk of exposure?
Risk depends on contact with infectious fluids or contaminated items, not just proximity to an affected person. Close caregivers, healthcare and care workers, and mourners who touch a body can face higher exposure risk, especially when infection-control measures are not followed.
| Setting | Why exposure may occur |
|---|---|
| Caregiving or healthcare | Direct contact with a sick person’s body fluids, contaminated equipment, or surfaces can expose caregivers and staff. |
| Funerals and handling a body | A person who died of Ebola can still pose a transmission risk through body-fluid contact. Safe and dignified burial procedures are for trained teams using infection-control measures and community engagement. |
| Wildlife contact | Handling or coming into close contact with an infected animal, including bats or non-human primates, can expose a person to infected fluids or tissues. |
| Sexual contact after recovery | Rare transmission from a male survivor has been documented because virus may persist in semen after recovery. This is a specific persistence route, not routine casual contact. |
For sexual exposure, the CDC advises avoiding contact with semen until testing shows that virus is no longer present. The CDC’s overview provides further information.

- KIT INCLUDES: One facepiece and one pair of replaceable organic vapor/P100 combination cartridges (#60921)
- 3M BAYONET CONNECTION: Makes it compatible with a wide range of 3M cartridges and filters
How to reduce your risk during an outbreak
- Avoid physical contact with anyone suspected or confirmed to have Ebola, and do not touch their body fluids or belongings and surfaces that may be contaminated.
- Wash your hands regularly and follow instructions from local health authorities.
- Do not touch or eat dead wild animals. Avoid contact with bats, primates, and other potentially infected wildlife, and cook animal products thoroughly.
- Do not handle the body of someone who may have died of Ebola. Safe burial procedures should be carried out by trained teams.
- Do not try to provide clinical care, clean contaminated materials, or manage a suspected case at home. These tasks require formal infection-prevention procedures and appropriately trained responders.
In a care setting, CDC clinical guidance calls for promptly isolating a suspected patient in a single room, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and dedicated equipment, and notifying public-health authorities. Those are professional response measures, not instructions for untrained readers to care for someone themselves; see the CDC clinical guidance.

What to do after possible exposure
- Contact a healthcare provider or local public-health authority promptly. Tell them about direct contact with a suspected or confirmed case, contact with a body or potentially contaminated items, or travel from an outbreak area. Follow their instructions rather than going unannounced to a healthcare facility.
- Follow the monitoring plan you are given. Public-health authorities may recommend monitoring contacts for 21 days after exposure.
- If symptoms develop, seek care immediately. Tell the provider about the possible exposure before arriving and follow local instructions so they can advise you on how to reach care safely.
Symptoms and when they can begin
The incubation period—the time between infection and the start of symptoms—is 2–21 days. CDC says symptoms commonly begin abruptly around 8–10 days after exposure. Early symptoms can include fever, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue; severe watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may occur later. Symptoms overlap with malaria and other common illnesses, so symptoms alone cannot confirm Ebola. Bleeding is not universal and may occur later. See the CDC’s clinical features summary.

- NIOSH APPROVED: For at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles
- COMPATIBLE: With a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection
- ADJUSTABLE NOSECLIP: Reduces potential for eyewear fogging and helps provide a custom and secure seal
- TWO-STRAP DESIGN: With welded dual point attachement that helps provide a secure fit
- APPLICATIONS: Gringing, sanding, sweeping, bagging, and other dusty operations. Metalworking, chemical processing, construction, and metal processing
As historical context only, CDC reported that among people in the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak, fever occurred in 87%, fatigue in 76%, vomiting in 68%, diarrhea in 66%, and loss of appetite in 65%. These are figures from that outbreak, reported in CDC’s 2026 summary; they are not an estimate of an individual’s chance of infection or a forecast for a current outbreak.
Vaccines and treatments depend on the Ebola virus species
“Ebola” covers diseases caused by different viruses, and available products do not apply to all of them. CDC says the U.S.-approved ERVEBO vaccine is for prevention of disease caused by Orthoebolavirus zairense. The FDA-approved treatments Inmazeb and Ebanga are also for disease caused by that virus. CDC says there are no FDA-licensed vaccines or therapeutics for Sudan virus, Taï Forest virus, or Bundibugyo virus disease. Availability and outbreak response can vary by jurisdiction and virus; check with local health authorities. See the CDC overview and WHO fact sheet.

A dated example of outbreak response
In a CDC report on the 2026 Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Bundibugyo virus outbreak, the agency recorded 5,458 confirmed cases and 2,606 confirmed deaths as of August 21, 2026, and described it as the second-largest Ebola outbreak recorded at that point. These are figures for that dated reporting snapshot, not current totals. The report lists surveillance, rapid case detection and investigation, identifying and monitoring contacts, infection-control measures, rapid testing, mortality surveillance, and safe and dignified burials among the response strategies. See the CDC report for its scope and date.
