Drought can make Xylella fastidiosa symptoms and growth losses worse, but it does not affect every almond tree the same way. The clearest controlled drought experiment found stronger leaf scorch and reduced growth in infected Virginia creeper, not almond. Almond studies show that cultivar, rootstock, pathogen strain, climate and orchard management can outweigh drought alone: a three-season study of ‘Filippo Ceo’ maintained high water status and showed no scorch under its tested Xylella-and-drought combinations.
For almond growers, the practical conclusion is qualified. Reducing severe water stress is supportive and belongs in a lower-loss management plan, but irrigation does not cure infection or guarantee that symptoms will not appear.

What drought changes in a Xylella-infected tree
Xylella fastidiosa colonizes xylem, the tissue that moves water through the tree. A water deficit therefore adds hydraulic stress to a system already affected by a xylem-limited bacterium. Marginal leaf necrosis may become more visible, symptoms may advance more quickly, and the combined stresses can reduce growth. Drought does not create Xylella infection, however; infection still depends on acquisition and transmission by xylem-feeding insects such as sharpshooters and spittlebugs.

What the drought experiments actually found
Controlled evidence: Virginia creeper, 2001
McElrone, Sherald and Forseth’s 2001 greenhouse experiment used a two-by-two design: Xylella-inoculated and uninoculated Virginia creeper were grown under high or low soil moisture. Infected plants receiving low water developed scorch farther along their stems and had more severe symptoms than infected plants kept at high moisture. Drought and infection also reduced total leaf area, shoot length and node number.
In one experiment, almost 40% of basal leaf area was scorched in low-water infected plants, compared with 8% in high-water infected plants. Those percentages are Virginia-creeper results, not almond estimates. The authors concluded: “This study is the first to verify the hypothesis that bacterial leaf scorch symptoms are enhanced during drought stress.” They also reported that regular watering helped infected plants withstand water stress.
Direct almond evidence: ‘Filippo Ceo’, 2024
A three-season almond field study evaluated naturally Xylella-positive trees, drought-stressed Xylella-negative trees, trees exposed to both Xylella and drought, and irrigated controls. The cultivar ‘Filippo Ceo’ maintained relative water content of 82–89% in all tested stress categories. Pathogen concentration was approximately 103 CFU mL−1, and researchers observed no almond-leaf-scorch symptoms.

The study did detect biological stress responses, including increased proline under Xylella stress and different stress-responsive gene patterns. Its result is best read as evidence that this cultivar and environment can tolerate the tested combination, not as proof that drought is harmless to almond trees generally. The reported study description does not establish that the same response would occur in other cultivars, rootstocks, climates or pathogen strains.
Why almond severity varies by cultivar and rootstock
Almond-specific field evidence shows that the tree’s genetic combination matters. In a five-year study, a ‘Sonora’ scion was grafted onto Nemaguard, Okinawa, Nonpareil and Y119 rootstocks. Symptom severity was highest on Nonpareil, intermediate on Okinawa and Y119, and lowest on Nemaguard.

These findings identify Nemaguard as the least symptomatic of the tested combinations, not as a universally resistant rootstock. “Nonpareil” in this experiment was one of the grafting treatments; the result should not be generalized to every Nonpareil planting or to a different scion-rootstock pairing.

What the reported yield losses mean
EFSA’s 2019 opinion summarizes five-year evaluations reported by Sisterson and colleagues in 2012. Compared with unaffected trees, affected trees produced 20% less yield for the Nonpareil cultivar and 40% less for Sonora. Nine of 183 affected trees died during the five-year period.

No published figure in the cited material isolates a drought-specific percentage yield penalty for almond across cultivars. The Virginia-creeper scorch percentages cannot be converted into an almond yield forecast.
Can water stress trigger Xylella symptoms?
Water stress can expose or intensify symptoms in a tree that is already infected, as the controlled Virginia-creeper study demonstrated. It should not be described as triggering the infection itself. An uninfected almond does not acquire Xylella merely because irrigation is inadequate; transmission still requires an infected insect vector.

In almond, the answer depends on the host combination. ‘Filippo Ceo’ maintained 82–89% relative water content and no scorch in the 2024 study despite the tested combined stress, while other cultivars and rootstocks have shown substantially greater severity and growth loss.

Irrigation is a supportive measure aimed at limiting additional water stress, not a treatment that removes the bacterium.
- Confirm the diagnosis. Leaf scorch has multiple causes. Use appropriate laboratory testing and assess the tree’s cultivar, rootstock, age and production history before making removal or irrigation decisions.
- Avoid severe water deficits. The controlled drought experiment found more severe symptoms in infected plants under low soil moisture, and its authors reported that regular watering helped sustain infected plants during water stress. Apply the orchard’s locally appropriate irrigation plan consistently rather than allowing prolonged deficits.
- Separate support from cure. USDA Agricultural Research Service guidance states that no effective management technique currently prevents trees from becoming infected. Irrigation may reduce stress expression; it does not eradicate Xylella or block vector transmission.
- Manage vectors and water together. Sharpshooters and spittlebugs spread Xylella while feeding on xylem. Vector-control decisions should be coordinated with local extension or plant-health authorities, because water management alone cannot stop new infections.
- Track the response. Record symptom progression, trunk growth, yield and irrigation conditions by tree or block. A tree that remains productive under adequate water may warrant a different decision from one with continuing canopy decline and large yield losses.
Which almond rootstocks are less affected by almond leaf scorch?
In the five-year rootstock comparison, Nemaguard had the lowest symptom severity, Okinawa and Y119 were intermediate, and Nonpareil was highest. Nemaguard was not uniformly unaffected: infected Nemaguard trees had smaller trunks than uninfected trees, although some later showed symptom remission and apparent pathogen elimination. Rootstock performance can change with the scion, pathogen population and site conditions.
EFSA’s lower-loss risk-assessment scenario includes resistant peach × almond hybrid rootstocks and resistant varieties, together with low water stress and pest control. That is a planning scenario, not a guarantee of resistance or a promise that irrigation prevents infection.
Should an infected almond tree be removed?
Removal is an orchard-economics and disease-management decision, not an automatic response to a positive test. USDA ARS advises considering orchard age, yield loss and tree value. Use those factors alongside the tree’s symptom trend, trunk growth, cultivar-rootstock combination and the risk of exposing neighboring trees to vectors.
- Keep and monitor when the tree remains productive, symptoms are stable and water management can prevent severe additional stress.
- Plan replacement when declining yield, canopy function or tree value no longer justifies the space and management cost.
- Escalate promptly when symptoms progress rapidly or multiple trees show a pattern consistent with vector spread; seek regional plant-health guidance for confirmation and block-level action.
The documented mortality figure—9 of 183 affected trees over five years—shows that death is possible but not inevitable. It should not be used as a universal survival rate for every almond orchard.

Drought is best treated as an amplifier of risk and symptom expression, not as a single cause of almond leaf scorch. Cross-host controlled evidence demonstrates the mechanism clearly, while almond studies show why the response must be interpreted by cultivar, rootstock, pathogen strain, climate and management. Lowering water stress can support infected trees and fits EFSA’s lower-loss scenario, but no cited evidence supports claiming that irrigation cures Xylella or prevents infection.
