How Drive-Thru Restaurants Use Cameras and Sensors to Manage Queues

Drive-thru restaurants manage queues by detecting vehicles at defined points, assigning those detections to service stages, and converting the events into counts, elapsed times, bottleneck alerts, and sometimes order-linked records. The sensing layer may use computer-vision cameras, in-ground vehicle loops, or both. A dashboard, timer, headset, or display then gives staff an operational signal; people still decide whether to add a cashier, open a station, prepare food earlier, or investigate an exception.

The technology measures what is happening in the lane. It does not, by itself, make service faster. Results depend on camera or sensor placement, software configuration, integrations, maintenance, and how consistently managers act on the information.

How do drive-thru restaurants use cameras and sensors to manage queues?

A queue-management system divides the drive-thru into observable events. A vehicle may be detected when it enters the property, joins the lane, reaches the menu board, pays, collects an order, pulls forward, or exits. Software timestamps those events and relates them to a vehicle journey. From that sequence it can estimate how many cars are waiting, how long each stage takes, and whether a threshold has been exceeded.

Camera systems use video analytics to identify vehicles inside configured fields of view. A loop system uses an electromagnetic sensor installed beneath the pavement and records a vehicle crossing that fixed point. Some restaurant platforms support either method, while others combine camera and point-sensor data. The useful choice depends on lane geometry, the stages the operator needs to measure, existing wiring and cameras, installation constraints, and the integrations required.

For example, Solink describes configurable camera zones covering areas from entry and vehicle stacking through the menu board and service windows. Global Payments describes both camera-based and loop-based deployment options, including lane reporting and order-to-vehicle matching where configured.

The four stages of a queue-monitoring system

  1. Capture a vehicle event. A camera analytics engine identifies a vehicle entering a detection zone, or a loop reports that a vehicle has crossed its installed point. The system may count the event, assign an identifier, and pass a timestamp to the next software component.
  2. Assign the event to a service stage. Configuration maps each zone or sensor to an operational step such as arrival, lane join, ordering, payment, pickup, pull-forward, or exit. Anuba Technologies describes journey tracking across lot entry, lane join, order point, payment, and pickup and says its product can process events at the edge.
  3. Calculate queue and service indicators. The platform can derive a current vehicle count, time between detection points, stage duration, total turnaround, or a threshold breach. If the restaurant has a supported point-of-sale connection, the software may associate a detected vehicle with an order; that association is product- and configuration-dependent.
  4. Present a cue to staff. A manager may see a live dashboard, a timer, a lane display, an alert, or a headset notification. The cue can prompt a staffing change, a kitchen-preparation decision, or an investigation into an unusual delay. It is an operational input, not an automatic correction.

What cameras and loops actually observe

Comparison point Camera-based detection In-ground loop or point sensor
What it observes Video across configured fields of view or detection zones; some systems can follow a vehicle through several stages. Vehicle presence at the specific installed detection points.
Installation factors Camera view, lighting, mounting height, network connection, processing method, and analytics compatibility matter. Existing cameras may be usable, but compatibility must be verified. Sensor placement, lane work, cabling, controller hardware, and access for repair matter. Timing is tied to the locations where loops are installed.
Potential visibility Several zones or a wider lane area can be covered when placement and analytics support it. Events are reliable at installed points; areas between those points are not directly measured.
Key buying questions Can it detect every required stage? Can it use the current cameras? Where are video and metadata processed and stored? Which point-of-sale and alert integrations are supported? Which stages will receive loops? What is the failure procedure? How disruptive are installation, resurfacing, and replacement?

Neither method is universally more accurate, cheaper, or more durable. The available product descriptions do not provide a neutral, cross-system accuracy or lifecycle-cost test. A site-specific design review is more meaningful than a blanket claim about cameras versus loops.

How a restaurant turns detections into a queue picture

Arrival and stacking

An entry zone can mark the moment a vehicle reaches the property or joins the drive-thru. Additional coverage over the stacking area helps distinguish a short queue from a line that is backing into the parking lot or roadway. A manager can use that signal to prepare for a rush or consider a traffic-management response.

Ordering

A camera zone or loop near the menu board or speaker records when the vehicle reaches the order point. Comparing that timestamp with arrival time shows how long the customer waited before ordering. It also helps separate an entrance problem from a slow ordering interaction.

Payment and pickup

Detection at the payment window and pickup window divides the service time into stages. If vehicles spend little time ordering but accumulate between payment and pickup, the likely investigation is different from a queue that stalls before the speaker. The system reports the interval; staff still need to inspect the process causing it.

Exit and pull-forward

An exit or pull-forward zone records when the vehicle leaves the window area or is asked to wait in a parking space. This makes it possible to measure total lane time and identify handoffs that need review. A vehicle that leaves before pickup can also create an exception, although reliable classification depends on the platform’s event model and camera view.

What managers do with the information

  • Reposition people: move a trained employee to ordering, payment, expediting, or window handoff when that stage is accumulating vehicles.
  • Prepare the kitchen: begin staging ingredients or assign an expediter when arrivals rise, without treating a raw car count as a guarantee of future orders.
  • Find the slow stage: compare stage times instead of treating total wait as one unexplained number.
  • Review shifts and sites: use historical reports, when the platform supplies them, to compare operating periods and investigate recurring patterns.
  • Resolve exceptions: check whether a vehicle left, pulled forward, or failed to match an order when an expected event is missing.
  • Connect lane activity with transactions: examine order and vehicle timing together when a supported point-of-sale integration is available.

These actions only work when the restaurant assigns ownership. A queue alert that nobody watches, or a report that is reviewed weeks later, has little operational value.

Order matching and point-of-sale integration

Vehicle detection alone produces movement events, not an itemized order. To connect a car with a transaction, the platform needs a supported point-of-sale or order-system integration and a practical matching method, such as a lane, timestamp, order number, or configured vehicle journey. Global Payments lists order-to-vehicle matching and lane reporting as capabilities of its drive-thru offering.

Ask the supplier exactly what happens when two cars are close together, a customer changes lanes, an order is canceled, or a vehicle is sent to a parking space. A dashboard may show an association without guaranteeing that every association is correct. Test the exception cases during deployment rather than assuming that a point-of-sale connection solves identification automatically.

Planning a camera deployment

Map the stages before choosing hardware

Draw the vehicle path from property entry to exit and mark every event the operation needs: queue entry, stacking, order, payment, pickup, pull-forward, and departure. A camera that sees the menu board may not see the payment window, and a single wide view can create occlusion when cars overlap. Define the measurements first, then select mounting points and analytics zones.

Check the physical and network conditions

Outdoor drive-thru cameras need a clear field of view, suitable night and weather performance, stable network connectivity, and a power plan. A power-over-Ethernet outdoor security camera can be a sensing component, but it is not a queue-management system by itself. It still needs compatible analytics, correct placement, networking, data handling, and a platform that can expose the required events. Hanwha Vision’s QSR guide discusses cameras and video surveillance for outdoor restaurant areas, including drive-thrus; Solink says its analytics can be applied to cameras operators already own. Existing equipment should be validated rather than presumed compatible.

Decide where processing and storage occur

Some products process video at the edge, while others send streams or metadata to a centralized service. Confirm what leaves the site, what is retained, how long recordings and event data remain available, and which employees can view them. These choices affect bandwidth, resilience during an internet outage, privacy controls, and the effort required to investigate a disputed event.

Define alerts that staff can act on

Set thresholds around a concrete response: for example, a queue length that triggers a manager check or a stage time that prompts an expediter review. Avoid creating alarms for every fluctuation. During a pilot, compare alerts with direct observation and adjust zones, thresholds, and schedules so that staff receive useful exceptions rather than constant noise.

Planning a loop-sensor deployment

Loops are installed at fixed points in the lane, so the design should place them where a timestamp represents a meaningful stage boundary. Confirm pavement condition, conduit routes, controller location, and the procedure for a failed loop. Because coverage is limited to those points, adding a new metric later can require additional construction or a different sensing method.

Ask how the system handles a vehicle that stops short of a loop, straddles a loop, reverses, or changes lanes. A loop can provide a dependable point event while still requiring software rules to interpret unusual movement. Maintenance access and repair time should be included in the operating plan, not treated as an afterthought.

Privacy, security, and governance questions

Drive-thru video can include customers, employees, license plates, voices, and nearby public areas. Before activation, document the camera views, purpose, retention period, access roles, export process, and deletion schedule. Limit views to the lane and operational areas that need measurement, protect accounts with strong authentication, and record who can retrieve footage.

Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by whether audio, facial features, or license-plate data are captured. Obtain local legal and labor guidance before enabling those functions. A vendor’s statement that analytics run at the edge may reduce video transmission, but it does not answer every question about retention, access, or lawful use; verify the complete data flow in the contract and technical documentation.

What published vendor figures do—and do not—prove

Vendor material shows that these systems are deployed, but it does not establish a universal industry performance number. Anicca Data describes a vehicle-detection project deployed at more than 100 United States restaurant locations for a large, unnamed quick-service chain. That is a vendor project description, not an independently audited adoption count.

Berry AI’s home page states that its platform processed 55 million vehicles in 2025. The figure is a vendor-reported platform total, not the number of vehicles processed by all restaurant systems. The same company presents an anonymous Zaxby’s franchise case claiming a 13% decrease in speed-of-service time, a 7% increase in comps, and $15,000 in weekly revenue reclaimed. Those figures should be treated as the vendor’s case claims, not independent verification or a guarantee for another site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DTiQ’s Shipley Donuts case study reports improved operational visibility, drive-thru organization, speed, guest experience, and car count. The page attributes those outcomes to the case study; it does not provide a neutral comparison against restaurants without the system.

Solink co-founder and CEO Mike Matta said in a May 13, 2026 announcement: “Speed and quality of service at the drive-thru is one of the most important drivers of revenue and customer satisfaction for QSRs, and for years operators have been managing it with technology that literally buries the lead in the dirt.” This is a promotional statement from a vendor executive, not an independent finding.

A practical rollout checklist

  1. Set the operational question: decide whether the priority is queue length, stage time, total turnaround, order matching, pull-forward monitoring, or a combination.
  2. Map detection points: mark entry, stacking, order, payment, pickup, pull-forward, and exit locations on the actual site plan.
  3. Choose the sensing approach: compare camera zones, loops, or a hybrid against pavement work, existing equipment, lighting, network capacity, and required coverage.
  4. Verify integrations: obtain a written list of point-of-sale, order, display, headset, reporting, and alert integrations, including supported exception cases.
  5. Test data handling: document edge or cloud processing, retention, access controls, outage behavior, and export and deletion procedures.
  6. Pilot one lane or shift: compare system events with direct observation, correct missed detections, and tune thresholds before expanding.
  7. Assign a response owner: specify who watches alerts, who changes staffing, and who investigates a stage-time breach.
  8. Review outcomes carefully: compare like-for-like shifts and account for menu changes, staffing, weather, promotions, and construction before attributing a result to the sensing system.

The soundest deployment treats cameras and sensors as measurement infrastructure. They reveal where vehicles are and how long transitions take; managers, crew workflows, and service decisions determine whether that information improves the queue.
