A drive-thru is both a restaurant service route and a vehicle-storage system. You enter the property, join a stacking queue, reach an order point, continue through the service lane, collect the food, and leave without parking. The exact order of payment, ordering and pickup differs by restaurant: some use separate stations, while others combine functions. The lane’s design must keep cars from spilling onto public roads, blocking parking or loading areas, or cutting across pedestrian routes.
The basic vehicle journey
Although layouts vary, most drive-thru trips follow the same circulation logic: entry, queue, order, continued service, pickup and exit. Treat this as a functional model rather than a universal arrangement. A particular restaurant may move a station, combine two stations or direct vehicles through a different loop.

1. Enter the property and find the lane
Directional signs, pavement arrows and raised islands should make the entrance legible from the site driveway. The vehicle turns into a designated stacking lane instead of stopping in a parking aisle or along the public street. Good site planning separates the queue from ordinary parking movements so a waiting line does not become an obstruction for customers who are parking, loading or leaving.

“Stacking” means the lane has room for vehicles waiting to be served. Cars move forward as the vehicle ahead advances, even when no transaction is taking place. A queue therefore has two jobs: it stores demand temporarily and guides each car toward the service points. The Town of Markham’s Drive-Through Facilities Design Guidelines identifies separate queue sections before and after the order station, along with the order box and pickup window as functional elements.

3. Reach the order point
At an order box, a speaker, a menu board or a staff member takes the order. This may be the first dedicated station, but it is not guaranteed to exist at every site. Some restaurants use a single window, a tablet or an employee walking along the queue. Follow the site’s signs and instructions rather than assuming that every lane has a speaker box.
4. Continue through the post-order queue
After ordering, the car normally advances into another portion of the lane. This segment gives staff time to prepare the order and allows the next vehicle to use the order point. The lane may then lead to payment, pickup or both. There is no evidence of a single payment sequence used by all operators, so payment can occur before pickup, at the same window or through a digital process depending on the restaurant.
5. Collect the order
A pickup window or counter-side handoff transfers the food to the vehicle. If the order is not ready, staff may direct a driver to a designated waiting space so the main lane continues moving. That practice is site-specific; do not stop in a through lane unless an employee directs you to do so.
6. Exit and rejoin site circulation
Once the order is complete, pavement markings or an island guide the vehicle out of the service loop. The exit may return to an internal driveway, parking circulation or the public street. A properly arranged route keeps departing vehicles from crossing the incoming queue or blocking a driveway.
What the lane is designed to accomplish
The lane is a small traffic network, not merely a line painted beside the building. Designers must estimate how many vehicles may wait, where they can wait, and how cars will move when demand exceeds that estimate.

Queue storage
Storage is measured either as a linear reservoir, in feet, or as a number of vehicle spaces. Those measurements are not interchangeable: the number of cars that fit depends on vehicle length, gaps and the way a jurisdiction defines a space. Required capacity also depends on the use, the site and local traffic analysis.
Separation from other movements
Markham recommends making lanes as straight and linear as practical, separating them from parking and driveways with raised islands or other barriers, and avoiding locations where the queue blocks parking or loading access. A site may include an escape route so a driver can leave the line when directed or when an operational problem occurs.

Signs, islands and lane markings should show where to enter, where to wait and where to exit. The route should not force cars across a pedestrian path or through a critical parking aisle. These are circulation principles; the precise lane width, turning radius and barrier design are local engineering matters.
How many vehicles can a lane hold?
There is no single national drive-thru capacity rule. The following examples show why a requirement must always be read with its jurisdiction, date and measurement method.
| Jurisdiction and source | Requirement or guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Sacramento County, California, code table amended September 10, 2026 | 280 feet for a restaurant drive-through primarily serving beverages; 240 feet for another restaurant drive-through | These are linear reservoir lengths, not vehicle counts. They apply to the county’s stated use categories. |
| Fishers, Indiana, Unified Development Ordinance, effective April 21, 2025 | Seven stacking spaces per food or beverage lane | This is a vehicle-space count, not a required number of feet. |
| Town of Markham, Ontario, design guidelines, June 2010 | Ten total restaurant stacking spaces recommended, including room for seven vehicles before the order station unless operations call for another arrangement | Markham describes this publication as urban-design guidance, not zoning code. |
| Colorado Springs, Colorado, municipal code section 7.4.1010 | Rules address restaurant stacking lengths, lane dimensions, pedestrian access, escape routes and public traffic | The code’s detailed requirements must be read in the applicable local provision; it is not a universal standard for other cities. |
Comparing the figures directly can be misleading. A seven-space rule does not tell you how many feet a county requires, and a 280-foot reservoir does not tell you exactly how many vehicles will fit. Local approval documents may also impose conditions based on a traffic study or a queue-management plan.

What happens when the queue is full?
If arrivals exceed service capacity, the line can extend into a parking aisle, block a driveway or reach a public road. Municipal rules treat that spillover as a safety and circulation problem, not just an inconvenience.
Queue-management plans
Sacramento County allows a queue-management plan describing measures to prevent an over-capacity line from blocking driveways, critical aisles, parking access or roadways. Such a plan can make the operator identify where staff intervene, how overflow is stored and how vehicles are redirected. The specific measures depend on the approved site.
A documented peak-demand response
A September 30, 2022 City of Manteca traffic study describes one In-N-Out operation using cameras to monitor the lane. When the line extended past the order point, handheld order-takers were introduced; staff could communicate with restaurant management and request support in the parking area. The study also reported an estimate of approximately one vehicle every 30–45 seconds during peak periods, with processing time varying outside those periods. Those practices and that rate describe the studied operation only, not a general industry target.
Physical escape routes
Some designs provide a bypass or escape lane so a vehicle can leave the queue without reaching the pickup window. An escape route is useful when a driver has an emergency, joins the wrong lane or is directed out by staff. It is not a license to cross islands or drive against arrows; use only the route marked for that purpose.
Ordering, payment and pickup are not always separate
Readers often picture three windows—order, pay and collect—but that is only one possible arrangement. A restaurant may have a menu board and speaker followed by a payment window and a pickup window. Another may combine payment and handoff at one window. A mobile-order lane may skip a speaker entirely and use a marked pickup point. Some facilities use an employee with a handheld device before the car reaches the building.

Because the evidence does not establish one universal payment sequence, rely on the signs, menu board and employee instructions at the site you are visiting. Keep your confirmation number, payment method and order details ready so the transaction does not stop the queue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pedestrians, entrances and accessibility
Vehicle throughput cannot be considered separately from walking routes. A queue that crosses the path from accessible parking to a building entrance creates a conflict even if cars never reach the public street.
Keep pedestrian routes clear
Markham’s guidance calls attention to conflicts among stacking lanes, building entrances, parking areas and pedestrians. Colorado Springs code states that required stacking lanes must not intersect pedestrian access to a public building entrance and prohibits stacking that impedes traffic in the public right-of-way. The exact treatment—crosswalk, sidewalk alignment, barrier or alternate entrance—is determined by the approved site plan.
Understand what ADA guidance does and does not say
U.S. Department of Justice guidance on the 2010 ADA Standards addresses accessible routes from arrival points to accessible public entrances and accessibility of queues and waiting lines serving food-service counters. That guidance does not create one universal drive-through lane layout or prescribe a single method for taking every customer’s order from a vehicle. A person who cannot use a speaker, reach a window or leave a vehicle may need an accommodation based on the applicable law, site configuration and the operator’s current procedure. Ask staff for assistance rather than stopping across a marked crossing or blocking the lane.
How to read a drive-thru layout as a driver
- Identify the entry and exit. Check arrows and signs before turning into the property so you do not enter an exit-only segment or block an internal driveway.
- Stay inside the marked queue. Do not form a second line through parking spaces unless staff have explicitly created one.
- Advance to the next marked point. The order station may be ahead even when the building is not visible; leave enough room for the vehicle in front to move.
- Follow payment and pickup instructions. The site may combine stations or send mobile orders to a different window.
- Use a designated waiting bay if directed. Pulling into a parking space of your own choice can block accessible spaces, loading areas or the exit path.
- Leave through the marked exit. Watch for pedestrians and traffic on the site driveway before joining the public road.
Comparing drive-thru designs
When evaluating a proposed lane or trying to understand why two restaurants feel different, compare the same operational dimensions rather than judging only by the number of windows.

Common problems and what they mean
The line reaches the street
This indicates that demand is exceeding available on-site storage or that vehicles are not being managed as the plan requires. Do not wait in a public lane unless traffic-control signs or staff direct you; use another entrance or return later if the site is unsafe.
Cars are blocking parking or loading
The queue has crossed from its intended reservoir into general site circulation. Stay in the marked lane and report the obstruction to staff. Operators may need to activate their queue-management procedure rather than asking drivers to improvise a second line.
A pedestrian crossing appears to run through the queue
Proceed slowly and yield at the marked crossing. A compliant layout should preserve access to public entrances, including accessible routes. If the crossing is blocked, stop before it and ask staff to clear the route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYour order is not ready at the window
Wait for an employee’s direction. A designated holding space allows the main queue to continue, but moving into an unmarked parking or loading space can create a new conflict.
Why the layout matters
The Town of Markham summarizes the design objective directly: “Providing adequate stacking lanes is a critical element of avoiding on-site circulation and safety issues.” The principle applies beyond one municipality: a drive-thru works when its storage, service points and exit are planned as one circulation system. Capacity numbers, lane geometry, payment sequence and overflow tactics must be interpreted in the context of the particular site and the rules that govern it.
