Shield AI has announced ambitious X-BAT range, mission and autonomy claims, and GE Aerospace and Shield AI reported a propulsion test milestone in July 2026. Those announcements do not establish that X-BAT has completed vertical flight or achieved its stated performance. The F-35B comparison rests on manufacturer-published specifications and the Royal Air Force’s operator context.
How does the X-BAT compare with the F-35B and other STOVL aircraft?
The clearest difference is evidence maturity. Shield AI describes X-BAT as an AI-piloted VTOL fighter for expeditionary and maritime operations. The F-35B is already in service, and the UK selected it to replace the Harrier and operate from Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. Comparing the aircraft’s published figures is useful, but it is not a like-for-like performance test: X-BAT figures are developer claims, while the F-35B figures below are from Lockheed Martin’s product card.

| Vertical-lift approach | Shield AI says VTOL. GE Aerospace and Shield AI reported testing an AVEN thrust-vectoring exhaust nozzle integrated with a GE F110-GE-129E engine. | Lockheed Martin describes a shaft-driven LiftFan propulsion system. |
| Published range | More than 2,000 nautical miles with full mission payload, according to Shield AI. | More than 900 nautical miles of internal-fuel range, according to Lockheed Martin. |

| Missions and autonomy | Shield AI describes strike, counter-air, electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, with standalone or collaborative operation using Hivemind autonomy. | Lockheed Martin describes the F-35B as a multirole fighter. |
What is X-BAT, and what has actually been demonstrated?
Shield AI unveiled X-BAT on October 22, 2025, describing it as an AI-piloted VTOL fighter intended for contested environments and expeditionary or maritime operations. The company says it is designed for strike, counter-air, electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and to operate autonomously or collaboratively using Hivemind. These are the developer’s stated design and mission aims, not evidence that those missions or autonomy capabilities have been demonstrated in operational conditions. Shield AI’s announcement
On July 20, 2026, GE Aerospace and Shield AI reported completing integrated actuation and engine light-off testing of X-BAT’s AVEN nozzle. They described the test as a milestone on the path to vertical flight. It does not establish that the aircraft has flown vertically. Their announcement also says each internal X-BAT bay can accommodate weapons in the 2,000-pound class; that is a design description, not a demonstrated weapons-load result. - Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.
How do their vertical-lift systems differ?
The public descriptions point to different propulsion concepts. GE Aerospace and Shield AI describe X-BAT’s AVEN as a thrust-vectoring exhaust nozzle integrated with a GE F110-GE-129E engine. Lockheed Martin describes the F-35B’s propulsion as a shaft-driven LiftFan system. Those descriptions identify the broad architectural difference; they do not provide a basis for declaring one system more efficient, reliable or capable than the other.
The aircraft also reflect different operating concepts. Shield AI presents X-BAT as able to launch and land vertically without a runway, for expeditionary and maritime use. The F-35B is a STOVL aircraft: the RAF’s account connects it to operation from the UK’s Queen Elizabeth-class carriers and its selection as the Harrier replacement. The cited sources do not establish that X-BAT has yet demonstrated those operating capabilities.

How should you interpret the range and payload figures?
Shield AI claims X-BAT can travel more than 2,000 nautical miles with a full mission payload. Lockheed Martin lists the F-35B’s internal-fuel range as greater than 900 nautical miles, its combat radius with internal fuel as greater than 450 nautical miles, and its weapons payload as 15,000 pounds. These are not interchangeable measures: range is not combat radius, and neither is a weapons-payload figure. The available figures do not specify a shared mission profile or test method, so they cannot establish a direct performance advantage for either aircraft. Lockheed Martin’s F-35B product card

Shield AI says X-BAT is intended to cost an order of magnitude less in acquisition and lifecycle costs than fifth-generation jets. The announcement does not provide a comparison basis or independently verified cost figures, so this should be treated as a company claim, not an established saving. The cited Lockheed Martin product card does not provide a cost comparator.

The available announcements establish a developing program and a propulsion test milestone, but do not establish a final X-BAT performance profile, verified cost basis or operational date. By contrast, the RAF provides an operator context for the F-35B, including its UK selection to replace the Harrier and operate from Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. Royal Air Force: F-35B Lightning
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does X-BAT compare with other STOVL aircraft?
The evidence supports a contextual comparison with the F-35B, not a numerical ranking across all STOVL aircraft. The RAF says the UK chose the F-35B to replace the Harrier, but that does not make Harrier variants equivalent to a developing X-BAT program or supply comparable performance figures. The sources cited here do not provide enough primary-source specifications to compare X-BAT numerically with Harrier variants or other aircraft. The careful takeaway is that X-BAT is a proposed VTOL entrant, while the F-35B has published manufacturer specifications and an established operator role.
