EMA is planned as a 13-year, multi-target campaign: six asteroid flybys, followed by a seven-month rendezvous with the red asteroid (269) Justitia and a planned lander deployment. Psyche is already in flight, heading to one metal-rich asteroid for roughly two years of orbital study.
That makes EMA a survey-and-follow-up mission, while Psyche is a sustained investigation of one unusual world. Their schedules also cannot be compared as if they were at the same stage: EMA’s launch, encounters and landing remain plans; Psyche launched on October 13, 2023, completed its Mars gravity assist in May 2026 and is expected to reach its asteroid in August 2029.

|---|---|---|
| Current stage | Planned mission; the UAE schedule calls for a March 2028 launch. | Launched October 13, 2023; Mars gravity assist completed May 15, 2026. |
| Target strategy | Six close flybys, then a rendezvous with (269) Justitia and a planned lander release. | Orbital campaign around one metal-rich main-belt asteroid. |
| Primary science | Compare several small bodies and examine the unusually red Justitia in detail. | Measure the composition and geology of a metal-rich asteroid to test ideas about planet formation. |
| Planned arrival or encounter period | First asteroid encounter planned for February 2030, with later encounters through 2034. | Asteroid arrival listed for August 2029, followed by about two years of orbital study. |
| Propulsive route | Planned gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars; the stated journey is 5 billion kilometres. | Solar-electric propulsion and a completed Mars flyby that changed the spacecraft’s speed and orbital plane. |
| Sampling or landing | A UAE-built lander is planned to collect surface data at Justitia. | No landing is planned; the spacecraft remains an orbiter. |
The table captures the central distinction: EMA seeks diversity across multiple asteroids and then a close look at one, whereas Psyche concentrates instruments, operations and time on a single target.
What the UAE’s Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt is designed to do
A campaign rather than a single encounter
The UAE Space Agency describes EMA as a mission to study multiple asteroids in the main belt. Its stated plan combines six years of development with seven years of flight, a 13-year timeline that begins with spacecraft preparation and continues through the interplanetary campaign. The agency schedules launch of the MBR Explorer for March 2028 within a three-week window. That is a target date, not a completed milestone, so launch timing and later encounters can still change.

The six planned flyby targets
The mission-team document names six close-flyby bodies:
- (10254) Westerwald
- (623) Chimaera
- (13294) Rockox
- (88055) 2000 VA28
- (23871) 1998 RC76
- (59980) 1999 SG6
At each flyby, the spacecraft would obtain remote-sensing observations while moving past the asteroid. A sequence like this can compare shape, surface properties and thermal behavior across bodies that formed in the same broad region but may have very different histories. The exact target nomenclature and flight plan should be checked against the UAE mission page as the project is updated; the list above reflects the mission-team document supplied for this comparison.

Justitia is the detailed follow-up target
After the flyby sequence, EMA is planned to rendezvous with (269) Justitia for seven months. Remaining near the asteroid allows repeated observations from changing viewing geometries instead of the brief snapshots available during a fast flyby. The spacecraft would map Justitia in greater detail and release a lander intended to collect surface data.
The lander is described as being developed by UAE private-sector companies working with academic partners. The plan is therefore more ambitious than a remote-sensing-only mission, but it remains a future operation: the schedule does not yet represent a completed landing demonstration, and the eventual deployment will depend on navigation, spacecraft health, surface conditions and the final mission design.
Why Justitia matters scientifically
Justitia is unusually red in infrared observations. EMA is intended to test the hypothesis that this color and composition indicate an origin beyond Neptune, followed by later transport into the asteroid belt. That is a question the mission is designed to investigate, not an established history for the asteroid. Measurements from the flybys and the longer rendezvous would let scientists compare Justitia with the other targets and determine whether its surface and thermal signatures support an outer-solar-system connection.
Planned instruments
The mission-team document lists several instruments:

What NASA’s Psyche mission is designed to do
An orbiter already on its interplanetary journey
NASA’s Psyche spacecraft launched from Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy on October 13, 2023. NASA lists arrival at its target in August 2029, after which the spacecraft is expected to spend about two years conducting an orbital science campaign. Unlike EMA, it is not scheduled to visit a chain of asteroids or deploy a lander.
The target is a metal-rich asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. Researchers think it may contain material from the core of a planetesimal, a building block of planets. NASA also emphasizes that it could instead be another kind of iron-rich body. The exposed-core interpretation is a working hypothesis that measurements must test, not a settled description.
The Mars gravity assist is complete
On May 15, 2026, Psyche passed Mars at a closest approach of 2,864 miles (4,609 kilometres) above the surface. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the encounter changed the spacecraft’s speed and orbital plane without onboard propellant and confirmed the route toward the asteroid.
Psyche navigation lead Don Han described the result this way: “We’ve confirmed that Mars gave the spacecraft a 1,000 mile‑per‑hour boost and shifted its orbital plane by about 1 degree relative to the Sun.” Principal investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton added: “We’ve been anticipating the Mars flyby for years, but now it’s complete. We can thank the Red Planet for giving our spacecraft a critical gravitational slingshot farther into the solar system.”
The assist is an important maturity difference between the missions. EMA’s planetary assists are part of a future trajectory plan; Psyche has already executed its major Mars encounter and is continuing its cruise.
Instruments and communications technology

Breadth versus sustained detail
EMA’s six flybys create a comparative dataset. Even if each encounter is shorter than an orbital campaign, observing several bodies can reveal how asteroid properties vary across size, surface type and probable history. The later Justitia rendezvous adds sustained mapping to the broad survey.
Psyche trades target diversity for persistence. Orbiting one body lets mission teams repeatedly measure the same terrain, track illumination changes and combine data from instruments that work best at different distances and viewing angles. That concentration is especially valuable when the central question concerns one body’s internal composition and geological evolution.
Different questions about planetary building blocks
EMA asks whether a set of asteroids can be compared in a coherent campaign and whether Justitia’s red infrared signature is consistent with material that formed beyond Neptune. Its lander concept could add direct measurements of surface properties that orbital remote sensing cannot fully resolve.
Psyche asks what a metal-rich asteroid is made of and what it may reveal about planetesimals, the small bodies from which planets grew. A metal-rich surface could reflect core-like material, but it could also result from another formation or impact history. The instrument combination is intended to distinguish among those possibilities rather than assume one in advance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRemote sensing and surface operations
Both missions rely heavily on remote sensing, but EMA adds a planned surface element at Justitia. The lander would provide measurements close to the ground and could test whether orbital interpretations match local conditions. That operation introduces additional constraints: the spacecraft must approach safely, select a workable release geometry and coordinate the lander with the orbiter.
Psyche avoids landing risk by remaining in orbit. Its challenge is maintaining a carefully designed orbital campaign around a body whose mass, gravity field and surface properties will be measured more precisely only after arrival. The mission can adjust its observations as early data refine the asteroid’s shape and environment.

What asteroids will the UAE mission visit?
The planned sequence starts with Westerwald, Chimaera, Rockox, 2000 VA28, 1998 RC76 and 1999 SG6, each approached during a close flyby. Justitia is the final, more intensively studied target. The encounters are not equivalent to landings: during the flybys, MBR Explorer would pass the bodies while collecting remote observations. Only Justitia is associated with the planned seven-month rendezvous and lander deployment.
Because EMA is still in development, the sequence, encounter dates and target labels may be revised. The agency’s March 2028 launch window and the 2030–2034 encounter plan should therefore be read as the current schedule, not guarantees.

The UAE mission plan includes releasing a lander at Justitia to collect surface data. That is a planned capability, not a completed landing or a promise that the spacecraft will touch down in a conventional, long-duration way. The mission-team material does not establish a final landing date, surface operating duration or complete landing procedure.
The distinction matters when comparing EMA with Psyche. EMA’s lander would extend the mission from orbital and flyby remote sensing to a surface investigation, but it also adds another sequence of critical events. Psyche’s architecture deliberately remains an orbiter and has no corresponding landing phase.
How the mission timelines should be read
| Milestone | EMA | Psyche |
|---|---|---|
| Development and launch | Six-year development phase stated by the UAE; launch scheduled for March 2028. | Launched October 13, 2023, from Kennedy Space Center. |
| Gravity-assist phase | Venus, Earth and Mars assists are planned parts of the route. | Mars close approach completed May 15, 2026. |
| First major asteroid operations | First flyby planned for February 2030. | Arrival listed for August 2029. |
| Core science phase | Six flybys, then a seven-month Justitia rendezvous and planned lander release. | About two years of orbital study around the target. |
Psyche’s completed launch and Mars flyby provide operational evidence that its mission is progressing through flight milestones. EMA’s dates describe an intended sequence that still depends on development, launch and navigation decisions. Comparing the science goals is valid; comparing the certainty of their schedules is not.
What remains uncertain for each mission
EMA’s future operations
- The March 2028 launch date is a schedule target and may move.
- The six-flyby sequence and later encounter timing depend on final trajectory design.
- Justitia rendezvous, mapping and lander deployment have not yet been carried out.
- The observations may support, weaken or complicate the hypothesis that Justitia originated beyond Neptune.
Psyche’s unanswered asteroid questions
- The target’s detailed composition is not known before orbital measurements.
- It may contain planetesimal-core material, but NASA also recognizes alternative explanations for its metal-rich nature.
- The orbital campaign will determine how well the target matches models of metallic bodies and planet formation.
In both cases, uncertainty is part of the scientific purpose. EMA is designed to test a possible origin story for Justitia; Psyche is designed to determine what kind of metal-rich body its target actually is.
Which mission is more ambitious?
“More ambitious” depends on the criterion. EMA has the broader itinerary: multiple flybys, a dedicated rendezvous and a planned lander. It attempts to gather comparative data from several asteroids while also performing an intensive investigation of Justitia. That breadth increases the number of encounters and operations that must succeed.
Best Value
Psyche is narrower in target count but demanding in another way. It must navigate to an unusual body, establish an orbit and use several instruments over an extended campaign to resolve competing explanations for the asteroid’s composition. Its completed Mars assist demonstrates progress, but the key science observations remain ahead at the asteroid.
For a reader interested in mission architecture, EMA is the more varied design. For a reader interested in a deep, sustained study of one metal-rich object, Psyche is the more focused experiment.
What each mission could contribute to planetary science
If EMA meets its plan
EMA could place several main-belt asteroids in one comparative context instead of treating each as an isolated target. Its Justitia observations could show whether the asteroid’s red infrared signature is associated with unusual minerals, surface processing or material transported from a colder region of the solar system. A successful lander operation would add surface-level evidence to those orbital measurements.

If Psyche matches its science objectives
Psyche could clarify whether a metal-rich asteroid preserves material from a differentiated planetesimal interior or formed through another process. Measurements of elemental composition, magnetic properties and surface color will be interpreted together, because no single instrument can establish the body’s history on its own. The result should improve models of how rocky planets and their metallic interiors developed.
The missions therefore complement rather than duplicate each other. EMA samples variety and tests a possible outer-solar-system connection for Justitia; Psyche concentrates on the structure and origin of one metal-rich asteroid.
Bottom line
The UAE’s EMA is a planned multi-asteroid expedition with six flybys, a seven-month Justitia rendezvous and a proposed lander. NASA’s Psyche is an active, already-launched orbiter headed to one metal-rich asteroid after completing its Mars gravity assist. EMA’s defining advantage is breadth plus a surface-investigation goal; Psyche’s is sustained orbital study backed by a mission already operating in space. Their targets, instruments and schedules answer different questions, so neither is a replacement for the other.
