On a Google Pixel Tablet, the taskbar is an app-access strip that appears differently depending on your navigation mode. With gesture navigation, slowly swipe up from the bottom edge while an app is open. With 3-button navigation, Google says the taskbar stays displayed. You can also pin it so it remains available in gesture mode.
The detailed instructions below come from Google’s Pixel Tablet help pages. Other Android tablet makers may use different menus or gestures, and some Pixel features require Android 14 or Android 15 and newer.

What the Android tablet taskbar does
The taskbar is a quick-launch and app-switching surface at the bottom of the tablet interface. It gives you a way to move to a pinned app, accept a suggested app, or browse the complete app list without returning to the Home screen first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On a Pixel Tablet, the available controls depend on what you have configured. Pinned apps appear as shortcuts. If you have not pinned any apps, the taskbar can show suggested apps instead. An action control lets you browse all installed apps. The taskbar is therefore different from a single app’s toolbar: it belongs to the tablet’s system interface and can be used while another app is open.

Google’s instructions are Pixel Tablet-specific in several places. Treat the behavior described here as the documented Pixel experience, not a guarantee that every Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon, or other Android tablet has identical gestures or labels.
When the taskbar appears
Gesture navigation: reveal it with a slow swipe
If gesture navigation is enabled and an app is open, place your finger at the bottom edge of the screen and slowly swipe upward. The taskbar slides into view. A quick, forceful swipe can be interpreted as a Home gesture instead, so use a deliberate upward movement when you want the taskbar.
Google documents this behavior in Find, open, and close apps on your Pixel Tablet. Once the bar is visible, tap a pinned or suggested app to open it, or use the all-apps control to find something that is not shown in the strip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3-button navigation: it remains on screen
With 3-button navigation, Google says the taskbar is always displayed. The bottom area includes the Back, Home, and app-switching controls associated with that navigation mode, so you do not need the upward gesture merely to make the bar appear.

This is a persistent layout rather than a temporary overlay. If you switch from gestures to 3-button navigation and still do not see it, check that the navigation-mode change was actually applied and that you are viewing the system interface rather than a full-screen app that temporarily hides system controls.
| Navigation mode | How you access the taskbar | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Gesture navigation | Slowly swipe up from the bottom while an app is open | The taskbar appears on demand; it can be pinned with “Always show Taskbar” |
| 3-button navigation | No reveal gesture is required | Google says the taskbar remains displayed with Back, Home, and app-switching controls |
How to open and use it
- Open any app. The documented gesture is performed while an app is open, rather than from an empty Home screen.
- Reveal the bar in gesture mode. Slowly swipe upward from the bottom edge. If you use 3-button navigation, look at the bottom of the display because the bar should already be present.
- Switch directly to an app. Tap a pinned app or one of the suggested apps. The current app is replaced by the one you selected.
- Browse everything else. Tap the control for viewing all apps when the shortcut you need is not shown in the taskbar.
Google marks some app-finding and app-switching guidance as applying to Android 15 and up. If your Pixel Tablet runs an earlier release, a control may be placed differently or a particular switching gesture may not be available. The core distinction—gesture navigation reveals the bar and 3-button navigation keeps it visible—is the behavior Google describes for the Pixel Tablet.
How to keep the taskbar visible in gesture mode
You can pin the taskbar so you do not have to repeat the bottom-edge swipe each time.

How to pin apps and create folders
Pin an app from the Home screen
- Go to the middle of the Home screen and swipe up to find your apps.
- Touch and hold the app you want to keep handy.
- Drag it down to the taskbar and release it.
The app now has a permanent shortcut in the taskbar. This customization procedure is described in Google’s Home-screen instructions for Pixel Tablet, which mark the relevant steps as Android 14 and up.
Use suggested apps when nothing is pinned
If you have not placed any apps in the taskbar, the system can fill the space with suggested apps. Suggestions are not the same as pinned shortcuts: they are offered by the system and can change, while a pinned app remains where you put it until you remove or move it.
Make a folder
To group shortcuts, drag one app onto another app that is already pinned. Releasing it on top of the pinned app creates a folder. You can then use that folder as one taskbar shortcut for a group of related apps, such as communication or work tools. The supplied Google procedure confirms folder creation by dropping one app onto another pinned app; it does not establish a limit for the number of apps in a folder.

Choosing between gesture and 3-button navigation
The Pixel Tablet exposes the navigation choice at Settings > System > Navigation mode. Google’s gesture guide describes the broader effect of each mode: gesture navigation uses swipes for Home, Back, app switching, and taskbar access, while 3-button navigation supplies dedicated bottom controls.

Gesture navigation is best when screen space matters
- The taskbar can stay hidden until you need it, leaving more of the display unobstructed.
- App access uses a slow upward swipe rather than a permanently visible control strip.
- You can still pin the taskbar with Always show Taskbar if repeated access is more important than a clean edge.
3-button navigation is best when you want visible controls
- The taskbar remains displayed according to Google’s Pixel Tablet documentation.
- Back, Home, and app-switching actions have visible buttons instead of relying on directional swipes.
- The persistent bottom area consumes some screen space, but it reduces the need to remember gesture locations.
Changing navigation mode changes how you invoke the taskbar; it does not remove the ability to pin apps or use the all-apps control. If the labels on your tablet differ, use the device’s own navigation settings and support documentation rather than assuming the Pixel path is universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The taskbar and Android desktop windowing
Android’s desktop-windowing feature is a separate, optional use case. Google describes it for supported large-screen devices and says that availability and the experience vary by device. When a supported tablet is connected to an external keyboard and trackpad, apps can open automatically in desktop-windowing mode. In that mode, minimizing a window sends it to the taskbar.
This does not mean that a keyboard or trackpad is required for the ordinary Pixel Tablet taskbar. You can reveal, pin, and use the standard taskbar with the tablet’s touch interface. Desktop windowing simply gives the taskbar another job: holding minimized application windows while you work with several resizable windows.
Read Google’s current support details at Multitask with desktop windowing and connected displays on Android. Because support is device-dependent, do not infer that a tablet showing the normal taskbar also supports desktop windowing.

Pixel and Android version limits to keep in mind
- Device scope: The detailed procedures in Google’s help pages are written for Pixel Tablet. Other manufacturers may place navigation settings elsewhere or implement a different taskbar.
- Android 15 and up: Google labels some app-finding and app-switching directions for Android 15 and newer.
- Android 14 and up: The Home-screen customization directions for pinning apps and creating folders are marked Android 14 and newer.
- Desktop windowing: Google describes it as available only on supported large-screen devices, with behavior varying by device.
On a non-Pixel tablet, start by looking for a setting equivalent to Settings > System > Navigation mode. If that path is absent, consult the manufacturer’s support page. Do not assume that a bottom swipe, an “Always show Taskbar” command, or the folder gesture has the same name or effect on another model.
Troubleshooting taskbar problems
The taskbar does not appear after a swipe
- Confirm that an app is open; the documented gesture is described from within an app.
- Use a slow, controlled swipe from the very bottom edge rather than a fast swipe that may be treated as Home.
- Check Settings > System > Navigation mode. If 3-button navigation is active, the bar should already be visible; if gesture navigation is active, it must be revealed with the upward swipe.
“Always show Taskbar” is missing
Reveal the taskbar first, then touch and hold its divider line—not an app icon. The persistent-display command appears in the divider’s pop-up menu. If the menu still does not contain it, verify that you are using a Pixel Tablet interface and a software version that supports the documented option.
An app is not available as a shortcut
From the middle of the Home screen, swipe up to the app list, touch and hold the desired app, and drag it to the taskbar. If you drop it on another pinned app, you will create a folder instead of a separate top-level shortcut, so release it in an empty taskbar position when you want its own icon.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA minimized window is not in the taskbar
That behavior belongs to desktop windowing, which is supported only on certain devices and configurations. The ordinary app taskbar does not prove that desktop windowing is enabled. Check whether your tablet and connected-display setup are listed as supported in Google’s desktop-windowing documentation.
A practical way to use the taskbar
For occasional switching, leave gesture navigation enabled and reveal the bar only when you need another app. For frequent switching, pin the taskbar with Always show Taskbar and place your highest-use apps there. Use folders when several apps belong together, and use the all-apps control when pinning everything would make the strip difficult to scan.
If you prefer visible navigation controls or find edge gestures unreliable, choose 3-button navigation instead. The taskbar will remain displayed, giving you a constant access point while also providing Back, Home, and app-switching buttons.
