When different cations share crystallographic sites, they alter which spins are adjacent, the oxygen-mediated exchange paths between them, and the local bond lengths and angles. The result can be a higher or lower ordering temperature, a broadened transition, persistent short-range correlations, frustration, or—in some compositions—a spin-glass-like ground state. There is no universal “more magnetic” or “less magnetic” rule: the outcome depends on composition, oxidation state, site occupancy, crystal structure and local distortion.
Average diffraction patterns can still show a well-defined crystal symmetry while individual unit cells contain different cation arrangements. Understanding a particular ceramic therefore requires both its average structure and local chemical and magnetic measurements.

What chemical disorder means in a ceramic
In this context, chemical disorder means that unlike cations occupy the same crystallographic sublattice in different local arrangements. The mixture may be close to random, or it may show correlations such as weak clustering of like cations. Local disorder can coexist with a periodic average lattice, local atomic displacements, different charge states, orbital changes and magnetic disorder.

“High entropy” describes the configurational complexity of a composition; it does not guarantee perfectly random positions. Reviews of high-entropy oxides report average symmetry together with distinct local environments, including compositions that are nearly random and others with measurable preferences for like-cation neighbors. Simonov and Goodwin explain how crystalline materials can be designed with disorder while retaining long-range crystallinity (Nature Reviews Chemistry, 2020).

How local chemistry changes magnetic coupling
Different neighbors create different exchange paths
Magnetic ions interact through direct overlap or through intervening anions, most commonly oxygen in an oxide ceramic. Replacing one cation with another changes the distance, angle and orbital energies along those paths. A substitution can therefore strengthen, weaken or even change the sign of an exchange interaction from predominantly antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, depending on the ions and geometry.
In perovskite high-entropy oxides, the B-site cations are especially important because neighboring B-site ions communicate through oxygen and provide the dominant superexchange network in many compositions. Rare-earth ions on the A site can contribute additional magnetic moments, often becoming significant at lower temperatures. This site-specific picture is a structural example, not a universal rule for every ceramic family; the relevant sublattice depends on the crystal structure and the ions present (Barber et al., Materials Horizons, 2025).
Valence and spin state matter as much as elemental identity
Two samples containing the same elements can have different magnetism if their oxidation-state balance differs. Valence controls the number of unpaired electrons and the orbitals available for exchange. A cation with a different spin state can also change the magnetic moment without changing the nominal site. Charge compensation may introduce vacancies or mixed valence, adding further pathways for interactions. Consequently, a chemical formula alone does not establish whether disorder will raise or lower a magnetic moment.
Local distortions modify orbital overlap
A ceramic may retain an average cubic, tetragonal or other symmetry while individual coordination polyhedra are distorted. In quenched MgCoNiCuZnO, for example, the average structure is cubic, but local Jahn–Teller distortions occur around CuO6 octahedra. Those distortions alter Cu–O bond lengths and orbital orientations, so the magnetic couplings sensed by neighboring ions are not all equivalent even though a conventional diffraction refinement assigns one average symmetry (Kotsonis et al., Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2023).

What changes can be observed in magnetic measurements?
Ordering temperature can move
When disorder changes the balance of exchange interactions, the temperature at which long-range magnetic order appears can shift. The 2023 Journal of the American Ceramic Society review summarizes antiferromagnetic rare-earth-based perovskite high-entropy oxides with reported Néel temperatures of approximately 115–185 K. In the same review, first-row-transition-metal spinel high-entropy oxides span approximately 30–770 K. These are literature ranges across different compositions and structures, not a tunable interval for one ceramic or a prediction for every high-entropy oxide (Kotsonis et al., 2023).
| Material class summarized in the review | Reported magnetic transition range | How to interpret the range |
|---|---|---|
| Antiferromagnetic rare-earth-based perovskite high-entropy oxides | Approximately 115–185 K (Néel temperatures) | Values from multiple compositions reported in the review; not one sample’s adjustment range. |
| First-row-transition-metal spinel high-entropy oxides | Approximately 30–770 K | Values span different spinel compositions and should not be generalized to all spinels. |
Transitions can broaden instead of occurring at one sharp temperature
In a chemically uniform crystal, many equivalent sites can produce a relatively narrow cooperative transition. Disorder creates a distribution of local exchange strengths and local ordering temperatures. Some regions may develop correlations before others, so susceptibility or related measurements can show a broadened anomaly rather than a sharp step. A broad feature does not by itself prove a spin glass; it can reflect short-range order, multiple magnetic subpopulations, finite-size effects or structural inhomogeneity.
Short-range correlations can persist above the bulk transition
Local groups of spins may remain correlated after the sample has lost macroscopic long-range order. The high-entropy-oxide review reports localized spin interactions persisting above the measured bulk transition in some systems. Such behavior means that “paramagnetic” in a bulk measurement does not necessarily mean every nearby spin is completely independent.

If a disordered lattice contains incompatible antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions, or if the geometry prevents all bonds from being simultaneously satisfied, the spins can become frustrated. Some rocksalt high-entropy oxides discussed by Kotsonis and co-authors show magnetic ordering driven toward a spin-glass ground state. This is a composition-dependent outcome, not an inevitable consequence of disorder. Evidence for a glassy state must come from the temperature and time dependence of magnetic measurements rather than from chemical complexity alone.

Can a ceramic look ordered but be locally disordered?
Yes. Conventional diffraction averages over a very large number of unit cells and is highly sensitive to long-range periodicity. Distinct local cation arrangements can therefore produce nearly identical average lattice parameters and symmetry labels. Local displacements, coordination changes and short-range clustering may be invisible or severely blurred in an average refinement.
The practical implication is that a single phase in an X-ray or neutron diffraction pattern does not establish random site occupancy. Local probes and modeling are needed to determine whether unlike ions are mixed randomly, whether like ions cluster, and how much coordination distortion accompanies the mixing.
How scientists determine the disorder that controls magnetism
Start with the average crystal structure
Diffraction establishes the phase, lattice symmetry and approximate site populations that are resolvable on the average. It is essential for identifying whether a sample is single phase, but it cannot by itself describe every local neighborhood. A chemically disordered ceramic can have a clean average pattern while retaining substantial local variation.
Measure local chemical environments
Nuclear magnetic resonance, spectroscopy and other local probes can distinguish environments that share the same average crystallographic site. A demonstrated example is the mixed-metal pyrochlore series Y2SnxTi2−xO7, La2SnxZr2−xO7 and La2SnxHf2−xO7. Fernandes and colleagues combined quantitative 17O NMR with first-principles ensemble calculations: the yttrium–tin–titanium pyrochlores were essentially random, whereas the lanthanum–tin–zirconium and lanthanum–tin–hafnium examples showed a weak preference for clustering like cations (Fernandes et al., Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry, 2021).

Connect structure to magnetic response
Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and temperature-dependent measurements reveal ordering temperatures, transition widths and hysteresis. Comparing those data with local-structure information helps distinguish a genuinely changed exchange network from effects such as porosity, secondary phases or incomplete reaction. If a transition is broad, local probes can test whether the breadth reflects a distribution of environments or a separate magnetic phase.
Use computation to test possible arrangements
First-principles calculations can generate ensembles of cation arrangements and estimate their relative energies, local distortions and magnetic interactions. Agreement between calculated local environments and measurements provides stronger evidence than assuming that a nominally equiatomic composition is random. The pyrochlore study above used this measurement-plus-calculation approach to quantify cation distributions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “more disorder” does not mean “more magnetism”
Magnetic behavior is not a one-dimensional disorder scale. Increasing the number of elements can increase the number of distinct local environments, but the net result depends on whether those environments add magnetic moments, dilute them with nonmagnetic ions, or create cancellation between opposing interactions. Disorder can raise an ordering temperature in one series and lower it in another; it can broaden a transition without greatly changing the average moment; or it can suppress long-range order while preserving strong short-range correlations.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEven within one structural family, changing concentration can alter which cations are nearest neighbors and whether clusters percolate through the lattice. Processing history also matters because quenching, annealing and oxygen stoichiometry can freeze different arrangements or valence states. A statement such as “disorder strengthens magnetism” is therefore incomplete unless it specifies the ions, sites, valences, local geometry and measured property.

A framework for comparing two disordered ceramics
When evaluating two formulations, compare the variables that directly control exchange rather than simply counting elements:
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which cations are magnetic, and what are their valences or spin states? | Determines the available magnetic moments and orbitals. |
| Which crystallographic sites do they occupy? | Different sublattices have different coordination and exchange networks. |
| Are cations randomly mixed, weakly clustered or strongly segregated? | Sets the frequency and connectivity of particular magnetic bonds. |
| What local coordination and distortions are present? | Bond angles, bond lengths and orbital splitting change exchange strength. |
| Which interaction pathway is affected? | Direct exchange, oxygen-mediated superexchange and other paths respond differently. |
| What is actually measured? | Ordering temperature, transition width, susceptibility, hysteresis and glassy signatures answer different questions. |
If any of these entries is unknown, a prediction should be labeled provisional rather than inferred from the chemical formula alone.
How to reason about a new ceramic composition
- Specify the composition and processing. Record elemental ratios, expected oxidation states, oxygen content, heat treatment and whether the sample was quenched or equilibrated.
- Identify the host structure and sites. Determine which cations occupy A, B or other crystallographic positions and whether site exchange is possible.
- Map the magnetic ions. List magnetic and nonmagnetic occupants, likely spin states and the nearest-neighbor pathways connecting them.
- Check local structure. Look for coordination changes, Jahn–Teller distortions, vacancies or clustering that an average diffraction model may conceal.
- Measure the magnetic response over temperature. Record the location and width of anomalies, low-temperature behavior and any hysteresis; do not reduce the result to a single “magnetic” number.
- Test the disorder model. Compare local-probe data with calculated random, clustered and partially ordered configurations.
This workflow separates what is known from what is assumed and prevents a result from one ceramic family being transferred uncritically to another.
What chemical disorder changes—and what it does not determine
Chemical disorder changes the distribution of local magnetic interactions. From that starting point, it can shift or broaden ordering transitions, leave local correlations above a bulk transition, and introduce frustration or glassy behavior. It does not determine the direction of the change by itself. To predict a specific ceramic’s magnetism, you need its cation identities and valences, site occupancy, local coordination, disorder correlations and measured magnetic response together.
