How Does a Restartable Rocket Engine Work in Space?

A restartable rocket engine works in space because it carries both fuel and oxidizer. It does not need atmospheric oxygen. During the first burn, tanks, valves and pumps feed propellants into a combustion chamber, where they produce high-pressure gas that expands through a nozzle to make thrust. To restart later, the vehicle must stop that flow safely, coast while keeping propellants ready, re-establish the correct pump and pressure conditions, and ignite a stable flame again. The exact sequence depends on the propellants, ignition hardware and engine cycle.

Why combustion works in a vacuum

A rocket is its own chemical power plant. Fuel provides chemical energy, while an oxidizer supplies the oxygen-like chemical reactant needed for combustion. Both are stored in tanks on the vehicle, so the engine can burn after leaving the atmosphere.

In a liquid engine, valves meter fuel and oxidizer from the tanks. Pumps may raise their pressure before injection, although some designs use tank pressure instead of turbopumps. Injectors distribute the propellants into the combustion chamber. The mixture burns into very hot, high-pressure gas, and the nozzle converts much of that pressure and thermal energy into exhaust velocity. NASA Glenn summarizes thrust as depending mainly on exhaust mass flow, exhaust velocity and the pressure difference at the nozzle exit.

The vacuum is therefore helpful rather than prohibitive. With little outside pressure opposing the plume, a nozzle can expand exhaust more effectively. The engine still needs carefully controlled propellant flow, temperatures and pressures; vacuum does not make ignition automatic.

What “restartable” means

“Restartable” describes a propulsion system designed to produce thrust again after a deliberate shutdown. It does not mean that an engine can simply be switched off and turned on like an electrical appliance. The vehicle and stage must preserve usable propellant, command the valves and pumps in the right order, and establish combustion without damaging the chamber, turbomachinery or nozzle.

Some engines are intended for one continuous burn. Others are qualified for one or more later burns, with thermal, structural and control systems sized for those cycles. A restart rating is specific to an engine configuration and mission; it should not be generalized to every version in a family.

How a restart happens, step by step

The following is a conceptual sequence. Real flight computers use engine-specific timing, sensors, interlocks and abort logic, and the order can differ between designs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Controlled shutdown: Commands close or modulate propellant valves so combustion ends without excessive pressure or mixture-ratio transients. Pumps and turbines are allowed to decelerate within safe limits.
  2. Post-burn conditioning: Residual propellant, chamber pressure and temperatures are monitored. Lines may be isolated, vented or chilled, depending on the engine. Cryogenic systems must manage boil-off and keep propellant within pump-inlet and ignition limits.
  3. Coast and vehicle control: During the unpowered period, guidance targets the next burn. The stage may use small attitude-control thrusters or other devices to keep propellant settled toward tank outlets. Without adequate liquid at an outlet, a pump can ingest gas instead of liquid.
  4. Pre-start checks: Flight software verifies tank pressures, valve positions, turbopump or pressure-feed readiness, temperatures, battery or power availability and the health of ignition hardware.
  5. Propellant admission: Valves begin feeding fuel and oxidizer according to a programmed start sequence. Pumps may spin up using gas turbines, electric motors or stored pressure; the method is determined by the engine cycle.
  6. Ignition: An igniter, torch, spark system or propellant combination initiates combustion. Hypergolic propellants ignite on contact and do not require a separate spark, while many cryogenic combinations need dedicated ignition hardware.
  7. Pressure and thrust buildup: Sensors confirm that chamber pressure, mixture ratio and turbopump speeds are rising as expected. The controller opens valves further until the engine reaches its commanded operating point.
  8. Thrust confirmation: Guidance proceeds only after the engine demonstrates stable combustion and sufficient thrust. If pressure, temperature or rotational-speed limits are violated, the start sequence can be aborted.

Propellant delivery is as important as ignition. A flame cannot remain stable if the pumps cavitate, if a tank outlet is uncovered, or if the propellants arrive at the wrong temperature or mixture ratio. Restart qualification therefore covers the complete startup system, not just the igniter.

Why an upper stage shuts down and fires again

Orbital missions often need separated burns rather than one uninterrupted push. An upper stage can first raise its orbit, coast to a favorable position, and then perform a circularization, escape or translunar-injection burn. Waiting can also improve launch-window flexibility and allow the vehicle to reach the correct point in its trajectory.

NASA’s Space Launch System reference identifies separate burns by the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS). During Artemis I, the RL10-powered stage performed a perigee-raise burn and a translunar-injection burn. NASA’s Artemis II plan calls for the ICPS RL10 to fire twice. These are mission- and configuration-specific statements, not a claim that every RL10 installation has the same schedule.

A NASA Spinoff article published in 2018 reported that RL10 engines had restarted up to seven times during a single mission. That figure belongs to the engine and mission context described in that 2018 account; it is not a universal current record for all RL10 variants or all restartable engines.

What makes a restart difficult

Keeping propellant at the outlets

In orbit, liquids do not naturally sit at the bottom of a tank. Surface tension, tank geometry, small settling burns and attitude-control maneuvers help place liquid where the feed system can draw it. A restart attempted with gas at the inlet can cause pump damage or an unstable mixture.

Managing cryogenic fluids

Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are extremely cold. Heat entering the tanks raises pressure and can change the fluid state. Feed lines and pumps must be conditioned so that the propellants reach the injector in the intended phase and temperature range. A long coast may require pressure-control or venting strategies.

Starting turbomachinery

An engine cycle determines how pumps obtain power. A gas-generator cycle burns a portion of propellant in a separate generator to drive turbines. An expander cycle uses heat absorbed by a cryogenic propellant, often through cooling channels in the chamber and nozzle, to create the turbine-driving gas. Electric or pressure-fed systems use different startup hardware. Each approach imposes its own timing and restart limits.

Igniting a stable mixture

Ignition must occur at the right mixture ratio, pressure and flow rate. A delayed or uneven ignition can produce a pressure spike, commonly called a hard start, or can leave unburned propellant to ignite later. An igniter must work repeatedly after exposure to vibration, cold temperatures and hot combustion products.

Handling thermal and structural cycles

Chambers, injectors, turbopumps and valves expand and contract as the engine goes from cold coast conditions to full thrust. Repeated starts add thermal and mechanical fatigue. Designers qualify the hardware for the number, spacing and duration of burns expected in its mission.

Ignition methods are not interchangeable

Hypergolic ignition

Hypergolic fuel and oxidizer ignite when they contact one another. This removes the need for a separate spark or torch, which can simplify repeated starts. The propellants are often toxic and corrosive, so storage, handling and ground safety become significant design considerations. Hypergolic behavior is a general chemical property, not a description of every restartable engine.

Spark, torch and other dedicated igniters

Non-hypergolic engines can use an electrical spark, a small torch flame or another pyrotechnic or catalytic device. The igniter has to light the main mixture over the engine’s pressure and temperature range and may need to operate multiple times.

Resonance ignition research

In an ESA-reported resonance-ignition concept, gaseous propellants enter a shaped cavity. Pressure waves in the cavity heat the mixture until it ignites. ESA said the first test campaign concluded in November 2025 and that the results were used to refine the cavity geometry for rapid, repeatable ignition. ESA published that account on 4 February 2026. The report describes technology development and testing; it does not establish that the igniter is flying as an operational in-space restart system.

Engine cycles change the restart sequence

There is no universal “rocket restart procedure.” The cycle controls how propellant reaches the chamber and how pump power is generated.

Example or technology Propellants or cycle What the evidence shows Status and qualification
RL10 on the SLS ICPS Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen NASA describes separate ICPS burns for Artemis missions. The Artemis I RL10B-2 is reported at 24,750 pounds (110 kN) of thrust. The thrust figure is for the Artemis I RL10B-2 configuration. Artemis II is planned to use two RL10 fires.
Vinci expander-cycle demonstrator Cryogenic expander cycle Hydrogen heated in regenerative chamber channels powers pump turbines. ESA reports cryogenic reignitions and closed-loop regulation by the demonstrator. A technology demonstration; it is not evidence that every cryogenic engine uses an expander cycle.
Prometheus Liquid oxygen and methane ESA describes the engine as reignitable. An engine-development program, with claims limited to the configuration and program information ESA presents.
Themis landing campaign Prometheus engine in a reusable-stage context ESA describes a possible sequence in which Prometheus is shut down and restarted during landing tests. Planned or future test activity on the cited program page, not an accomplished flight demonstration.
Resonance igniter Gaseous propellants in a resonant cavity ESA reports testing by The Exploration Company under its Thrust! initiative. Ignition technology under development, not a validated universal restart solution.

The Vinci example illustrates why the cycle matters. In an expander cycle, heat from the chamber and nozzle is transferred into hydrogen. That warmed hydrogen becomes the working fluid for the pump turbines. A restart must re-establish the thermal and flow conditions that make turbine power available; opening the main valves alone would not reproduce the cycle.

Restartable versus reusable: related but different

A restartable engine can fire more than once in a mission. A reusable stage must survive recovery, inspection or autonomous health monitoring, landing loads, storage and another flight. Reusability usually demands more starts and more thermal cycles, but restart capability by itself does not prove that an engine or stage is reusable.

Likewise, a ground test restart demonstrates that hardware can repeat a start under test conditions. It does not automatically demonstrate an in-space restart after a long coast, with propellant slosh, thermal soak and flight guidance constraints.

How to judge claims about a “restartable” engine

  • Identify the exact variant: thrust, propellant and restart counts can differ between versions.
  • Separate flight history from testing: a flown restart, a ground demonstration and a planned campaign are different evidence levels.
  • Check the mission profile: one restart after a short coast is not equivalent to many restarts over a long-duration mission.
  • Look beyond the igniter: tank management, pump spin-up, feed-line conditioning, software interlocks and thrust confirmation are all part of the restart system.
  • Keep dates attached to figures: NASA’s “up to seven” RL10 figure comes from a 2018 Spinoff account, while the ESA resonance-ignition milestone was reported in February 2026.

The essential idea

A restartable rocket engine is a controlled chemical plant that can return from a shutdown state to stable thrust. The vehicle carries its oxidizer, so combustion works in vacuum. The hard part is coordinating propellant storage and settling, pressure and pump startup, thermal conditioning, ignition and guidance limits. Because those requirements depend on propellant and engine cycle, restartability is an engineered capability of a particular propulsion system—not a single mechanism shared by every rocket.
