How Do You Add the Samsung Weather Widget and Set a City?

To put weather on a Samsung Galaxy Home screen, touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose Weather, select a widget style or size, and add it. You can then choose a saved city or use your current location. The exact labels and screens vary by Galaxy model, region, and One UI version, so use the controls shown on your phone.

What you need before adding the widget

The Weather widget is built into Samsung’s software on most Galaxy phones, including devices in the Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, and Galaxy A families. You do not need to buy an accessory or install a separate widget to follow this guide. The Weather app and the Home-screen widget must be available on your particular model and software build.

  • Use a Galaxy phone with Samsung’s Weather feature installed.
  • Have at least one open space on a Home-screen panel, or be ready to move existing icons and widgets.
  • Turn on Location if you want the widget to follow your current position.
  • Expect menu names, screenshots, widget designs, and available sizes to differ by model, country, and software version.

Samsung’s support guidance available on October 13, 2026, describes the common process below but specifically warns that menus can change. If a label is slightly different on your phone, choose the control with the same purpose rather than trying to match a screenshot exactly.

Add the Samsung Weather widget to the Home screen

The widget is added from the Home-screen editing menu, not from the Weather app’s main forecast screen.

  1. Open a Home-screen panel. Press the Home button or swipe up from the bottom edge, depending on your navigation setup, until you see the panel where you want the forecast.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area. Keep your finger on a blank part of the wallpaper until the Home-screen editing controls appear. Holding an icon or another widget opens a different menu.
  3. Tap Widgets. This opens the widget picker, which groups available widgets by app or feature.
  4. Find and tap Weather. If the picker has a search field, enter “Weather.” Otherwise, scroll through the list until the Weather entry appears.
  5. Choose a widget style or size. Swipe through the available Weather designs and select the footprint that fits your panel. Different designs can show different amounts of forecast information.
  6. Add it to the panel. Tap Add, or touch and hold the selected design and drag it onto the Home screen, depending on the controls displayed by your software.
  7. Select a location if prompted. Pick an existing city or allow the widget to use your current location. If no city is saved yet, the Weather app may ask you to add one before the widget can display a forecast.

After placement, wait briefly for the forecast to load. A newly added widget can take longer than an already configured one if the Weather app has to obtain a location or download current data.

Pick a useful style, size, and position

Choose the amount of information you need

Samsung provides more than one Weather widget design or size. A compact version uses less Home-screen space, while a larger version can present more forecast detail at a glance. The available choices depend on your Galaxy model and software version; the picker on your phone is the authoritative list.

Consider the other items on the same panel before choosing. Leave room for the widget’s full width and height so it does not force frequently used icons onto another page. If a design occupies more space than expected, remove it and add a smaller option from the Weather picker.

Move the widget after adding it

  1. Touch and hold the Weather widget.
  2. Keep holding while you drag it to the desired position or to the edge of the screen to move it to another Home-screen panel.
  3. Release your finger when the placement outline appears in the correct location.

Moving a widget changes its position but does not change the city or refresh behavior. Those controls are in the widget’s settings.

Resize when your model allows it

Some widget designs expose resize handles after a long press. Drag a handle to increase or reduce the footprint, then tap outside the widget to finish. If no handles appear, that design has a fixed size; return to the Weather widget picker and select another style instead.

Set a city or use your current location

A Weather widget can display a saved city or the location detected by your phone. Samsung’s location instructions separate the process into two parts: first save a city in the Weather app, then choose which saved location the widget uses.

Add a city to the Weather app

  1. Open the Samsung Weather app.
  2. Tap the plus control used to add a location. Its position and appearance can vary between versions.
  3. Search for the city, then select the matching result.
  4. Save or confirm the city so it appears in the Weather app’s list of locations.

Adding a city does not automatically change every existing widget. Each widget can have its own selected location, so configure the specific widget you want to change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the location shown by a widget

  1. Touch and hold the Weather widget on the Home screen.
  2. Open Settings for that widget. The control may appear as a settings icon or as a menu item after the long press.
  3. Tap Change beside the currently selected location.
  4. Select another saved city from the list.
  5. Save or confirm the selection.

The widget should update to the newly selected city after the change is saved. If the city is not listed, add it in the Weather app first, then repeat the widget-location steps.

Let the widget follow you

Current-location display depends on Location services. Turn Location on in the phone’s quick settings or in the system location settings, then grant the Weather app the location permission it requests. The exact permission wording depends on the Android and One UI version installed on your Galaxy device.

When Location is off, the widget cannot reliably follow your movements. Use a saved city instead if you prefer a fixed forecast or do not want the Weather app to use location information.

Refresh weather information automatically

Samsung documents an Auto refresh on the go option for its Weather feature. In the documented interface, a visible refresh icon indicates that automatic refresh is off. Turning on Auto refresh on the go removes that manual refresh icon and allows weather information to refresh when movement is detected.

  1. Open the Weather app or the Weather feature settings on your Galaxy phone.
  2. Look for Auto refresh on the go.
  3. Turn the option on if you want movement-based automatic updates.
  4. Return to the Home screen and check the widget after the next update.

This setting is documented in Samsung’s Android 13 (One UI 5) feature context. It may not appear, may use different wording, or may work differently on another software version. Do not assume that every Galaxy phone offers the same refresh controls.

If automatic refresh is disabled, use the refresh control shown in the Weather app when you want to request new information. A manual refresh does not change the city selected for the widget.

Fix a missing, wrong, or stale Weather widget

The Weather option is missing from the widget picker

  • Open the app list and confirm that Samsung’s Weather app is present.
  • Install any pending software or app updates offered for your phone.
  • Restart the phone, then return to an empty Home-screen area and open Widgets again.
  • Check another Home-screen panel; the widget picker itself should not depend on which panel you started from, but available space can prevent placement.

If Weather is not available after these checks, your model or regional software build may not expose the widget. Samsung’s guidance describes the feature as available on most Galaxy devices rather than promising identical support on every model.

The widget shows the wrong city

  1. Touch and hold the widget and open its settings.
  2. Tap Change beside the selected location.
  3. Choose the intended saved city and save.
  4. If that city is absent, open Weather, add it with the plus control, and repeat the selection.

Also check whether the widget is configured for current location. A current-location widget can change as the phone detects a different position; a saved-city widget remains tied to the city you selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The widget does not show your current location

  • Turn on the phone’s Location service.
  • Open the system app-permission screen and confirm that Weather has permission to access location.
  • Return to the Weather app and allow it time to obtain a position.
  • Verify that the widget is set to the current-location option rather than a saved city.

Samsung identifies Location services and Weather app permission as prerequisites for current-location behavior. Permission names and choices can vary by Android release.

The forecast is stale

  • Check whether a refresh icon is visible. Samsung associates that icon with automatic refresh being off in the documented interface.
  • Use the Weather app’s refresh control, or enable Auto refresh on the go if that setting is available on your version.
  • Confirm that the phone has an internet connection and that Location is enabled when the widget is configured for current location.
  • Check for Weather app and system updates.
  • Remove the widget and add it again if the display still does not update.

Removing and re-adding the widget is a Samsung support recommendation. It resets the widget instance; you may need to select its city again during setup.

The widget disappears or will not fit

Home-screen panels have finite grid space. Touch and hold the widget, drag it to another panel, or replace it with a smaller Weather design. If the widget vanishes after an accidental long press, open Widgets and add it again; removing a widget does not uninstall the Weather app.

Use Weather on Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip screens

Samsung’s U.S. support documentation also covers adding the Weather widget to the Galaxy Z Fold front screen and to the Galaxy Z Flip FlexWindow where those models support the feature. Open the screen you want to customize, then use its own Home-screen editing controls and follow the same basic sequence: touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose Weather, select a design, and add it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Foldable phones can present different layouts on the cover, front, or inner display. A widget added to one screen may not automatically appear on another. Configure each supported screen separately and use the controls shown on that screen.

Why your menus may not match these steps

Samsung releases different One UI builds for different Galaxy models and regions. The company’s support pages use screenshots and labels that can differ from the interface on your phone. The following variations are normal:

  • The widget picker may show a search field, category list, or a different order of apps.
  • The add control may be labeled Add, represented by a plus sign, or use drag-and-drop.
  • Widget settings may open from a gear icon, a context menu, or a direct settings item after a long press.
  • Available Weather styles, resize handles, refresh controls, and location choices can vary by model and software version.
  • Foldable devices can offer separate widget areas on the cover and inner displays.

When a label differs, match the function: Home-screen editing, Widgets, Weather, a style or size, a location choice, and Save or Confirm. Avoid changing unrelated system settings simply to reproduce a support screenshot from another Galaxy model.

Quick reference for the main tasks

Goal Path or gesture What to expect
Add Weather Touch and hold empty Home-screen space → Widgets → Weather → choose style or size → add The widget appears on the selected panel.
Move Weather Touch and hold the widget → drag → release The widget changes position or Home-screen panel.
Choose another saved city Touch and hold widget → widget settings → Change beside location → select city → save The widget uses the selected saved location.
Add a city Open Weather → tap the plus control → search and select a city The city becomes available for widget selection.
Use current location Enable Location and Weather location permission; select current location in widget settings The widget can follow the phone’s detected position.
Enable movement-based refresh Weather settings → Auto refresh on the go On supported versions, movement can trigger updates and the manual refresh icon is removed.

Final checks after setup

  • The widget is on the intended Home-screen panel and does not cover essential icons.
  • The displayed city matches the location you selected.
  • Location and Weather permissions are enabled if you chose current-location forecasts.
  • The widget style and size fit the available grid space.
  • Your refresh option matches your preference and the controls available on your One UI version.

Once these checks pass, the Samsung Weather widget is configured without installing additional software. If a future update changes a label or design, start from the same Home-screen Widgets menu and follow the equivalent controls on your Galaxy device.
