In the studied species Asterias rubens, that adhesive is a blend of proteins made by specialized cells, while a separate cell type is associated with release. It is not one simple, permanent “superglue.”
How do starfish stick to things underwater?
Sea stars move and attach with rows of tube feet. Each tube foot ends in a disc that presses against a surface and secretes adhesive material into the narrow space between the disc and the surface. When the foot later detaches, some of that material remains behind as a footprint.

In Asterias rubens, researchers describe the footprint as a thin, relatively uniform primer layer beneath a thicker structural meshwork. That arrangement suggests the secretion has more than one job: establishing contact with the surface and holding the adhesive material together as a cohesive layer.

What is starfish glue made of?
It is a complex protein blend, not a single identified glue molecule. A 2022 study combined gene-expression evidence from tube feet with protein analysis of footprints in A. rubens and catalogued 16 sea-star footprint proteins (Sfps). The researchers used immunolabelling to connect proteins with cell types and proposed roles for them; these are findings and a functional model for the studied species, not a universal inventory for all sea stars. - Surface coupling: The authors proposed that two Sfps help couple the adhesive to the surface.
- Cohesion: Six Sfps were proposed to contribute to the strength of the adhesive material itself.
- Binding matrix: Other proteins were proposed to form a matrix that organizes or binds components of the footprint.
An earlier biochemical analysis of soluble A. rubens footprint proteins reported about 25 electrophoretic bands, including 11 abundant bands that were not identified in that study and were named sea-star footprint proteins. That band count is a result of a different method and date; it is not the same measurement as the 16-protein catalogue published in 2022. Biofouling (2012).
How does a sea star let go?
Attachment is temporary, and detachment is an active part of the system. In A. rubens, the 2022 study identified a distinct de-adhesive cell type and proposed that an astacin-like proteinase released by these gland cells weakens the bond between the adhesive material and the tube-foot surface. The proposed mechanism helps explain how a foot can release after holding on; it should not be assumed to describe every sea-star species in the same detail.

Why the explanation has changed over time
Sea-star adhesion has been studied using different species and methods, so early explanations should not be treated as the final account of all sea-star glue. In a 1985 study of Leptasterias hexactis, researchers observed adhesion to moderately anionic glass and to surfaces bearing anionic marine bacterial films. They proposed ionic interactions involving secreted films and glycosaminoglycans in release. That was a proposed explanation for that species and experimental setting; later protein characterization added molecular detail. Journal of Experimental Biology (1985).

It also notes that detailed adhesion studies have concentrated on sea stars and regular sea urchins rather than every echinoderm group. How the natural system compares with a starfish-inspired device
Researchers have translated the idea of a reversible tube foot into an artificial underwater gripper, but its mechanics are not simply a copy of the natural protein glue. A 2025 Science Advances study describes a soft hydrogel mouth attached to a rigid stem. As the hydrogel swells, it changes from a straight form into a cupped pad that deforms on contact. The authors describe vacuum formation during detachment as part of the underwater adhesion, and report switchable behavior, stimulus-triggered release, pneumatic detachment, and underwater manipulation of rocks. This is a research demonstration, not evidence of a product for sale. Science Advances (2025).
