How Do Spacecraft Reach and Study Multiple Asteroids on One Mission?

Spacecraft reach several asteroids by following a heliocentric trajectory that intersects each body’s future position. Mission designers use launch timing, engine burns, planetary gravity assists and continual navigation updates to arrange those meetings. At every asteroid, the spacecraft performs a carefully timed close flyby, points its instruments at the target, gathers images and measurements, and then continues toward the next object. It does not normally stop and enter orbit around each asteroid.

This approach sacrifices the prolonged, all-around observations of a single-target orbiter, but it lets one spacecraft compare multiple bodies and asteroid populations without carrying enough propellant to cancel its velocity at every stop. NASA’s Lucy mission is the clearest current example: its multi-year route uses Earth encounters to connect the main asteroid belt with Jupiter’s Trojan populations. NASA’s mission pages provide the latest encounter status and schedule at the Lucy mission overview.

What a multi-asteroid mission is actually trying to do

A spacecraft is not launched at an asteroid’s present location. The target will continue orbiting the Sun, so the spacecraft must arrive at the point where both paths cross at a particular future time. The same calculation must work for every later target. This turns a multi-asteroid mission into a sequence of connected orbital encounters rather than a series of independent trips.

The spacecraft remains in orbit around the Sun, as the asteroids do. Its path is selected so that its solar orbit intersects one asteroid, then another, while staying within the launch vehicle’s departure energy, the spacecraft’s propulsion capability, communications limits and the instruments’ viewing requirements. NASA describes this route-search process for Lucy in its account of trajectory design and target selection: engineers compare possible spacecraft paths with many known asteroid orbits to identify reachable scientific opportunities (NASA’s trajectory and target-selection explanation).

Because asteroid orbits and spacecraft navigation estimates are never perfectly known, the route is refined throughout the mission. Tracking from Earth improves the spacecraft’s position and velocity estimate. Small trajectory-correction maneuvers then adjust the arrival time, miss distance and approach direction. NASA’s Lucy navigation overview notes that changes in spacecraft performance or science requirements can alter correction plans and flyby distances (NASA’s Lucy trajectory and navigation overview).

How engineers connect the targets

1. Start with orbital geometry

Designers first propagate the known orbits of candidate asteroids and the spacecraft’s possible solar trajectories. A useful target is not merely scientifically interesting; it must be reachable when the spacecraft passes through the target’s orbital neighborhood. The search includes the relative inclination of the orbits, the encounter date, the required approach speed and the direction from which instruments can view the surface.

2. Fit the launch and propulsion limits

The launch date determines which solar trajectories are available. After launch, engine burns can change the spacecraft’s orbit, but propellant is finite. A route that visits more bodies may require longer cruise periods, tighter navigation and more correction opportunities. Mission designers therefore optimize a whole chain of encounters, not the shortest path to the first asteroid.

3. Reserve time for operations and communication

Each encounter needs an approach campaign, instrument pointing, spacecraft-health checks, data storage and later downlink. Antenna visibility and the distance from Earth limit when commands and science data can be exchanged. The route must leave enough margin for those activities as well as for safe-mode recovery or an unexpected correction.

What a planetary gravity assist contributes

A gravity assist is a controlled planetary flyby used to reshape a spacecraft’s orbit around the Sun. As the spacecraft passes a moving planet, the planet’s gravity bends the spacecraft’s path. In the Sun-centered frame, the spacecraft can leave with a different direction and heliocentric speed than it had on arrival. The planet’s own orbit changes by an immeasurably small amount in the process; the maneuver is not energy created from nothing.

The practical result is that a spacecraft can make a large change in its solar trajectory without producing the same change through an onboard engine burn. The encounter must be targeted precisely: altitude, incoming direction and timing determine the outgoing path. A gravity assist can send a spacecraft inward, outward or onto a different orbital inclination, but it cannot make an otherwise unreachable itinerary possible without regard to launch energy and navigation accuracy.

Lucy uses repeated Earth encounters as part of the route between the inner main-belt region and the Trojan asteroids that share Jupiter’s orbit. NASA explains the role of those Earth flybys in its mission coverage (NASA’s Lucy Earth gravity-assist article). Gravity assists are a design choice, however, not a requirement for every multi-asteroid mission. A different mission could rely on direct propulsion, a sequence of resonant solar orbits, or a combination of techniques.

Why fly past an asteroid instead of orbiting it?

To orbit an asteroid, a spacecraft must arrive with a relative velocity low enough for the asteroid’s weak gravity to capture it, or it must perform a braking maneuver and then maintain the orbit. That velocity change consumes propellant. Repeating it at several asteroids would make the fuel and trajectory problem substantially harder. NASA’s Lucy FAQ discusses this cost and why a fast tour can sample more bodies (NASA’s Lucy frequently asked questions).

A flyby keeps the spacecraft on its solar trajectory. It approaches, passes the asteroid at a planned closest-approach distance and departs without attempting capture. The spacecraft receives only a limited viewing interval, and the target’s changing angle and illumination constrain the observations. In exchange, the mission can visit objects that occupy different orbits and compare them within one coordinated survey.

Mission architecture What it can do well What it costs or limits Best-matched science
Multi-target flyby tour Samples several objects or populations and preserves spacecraft speed between encounters. Short observing windows, one approach geometry per target and a demanding navigation sequence. Comparative geology, surface appearance, shapes, thermal behavior and population-level questions.
Single-target rendezvous or orbiter Observes repeatedly from many altitudes and lighting geometries over an extended period. Requires substantial velocity matching and propellant; normally concentrates the mission on one body. Detailed mapping, changing surface processes, precise gravity measurements or preparation for landing.
Landing or sample-return mission Can make contact with the surface or deliver material for laboratory analysis on Earth. Needs additional descent, ascent, contamination-control and fault-management capabilities. In-situ experiments or laboratory analysis of selected material.

NASA’s planetary-defense architecture work describes the central trade-off similarly: a multi-target flyby tour provides less detail at each object but covers several targets (NASA’s Lucy FAQ). The right architecture follows the science objective rather than a universal rule that every asteroid should be orbited.

What happens during an asteroid encounter?

  1. Approach navigation. Ground teams combine radiometric tracking with optical images of the target against background stars. These observations refine the predicted miss distance and the time of closest approach.
  2. Trajectory correction. If the prediction is outside the allowed corridor, the spacecraft performs a small engine burn. Corrections are planned to protect both the encounter geometry and the propellant reserve for later targets.
  3. Spacecraft pointing. Before the closest pass, the attitude-control system turns the spacecraft so cameras and spectrometers can scan the asteroid while the high-gain antenna and other systems remain within their operating constraints.
  4. Closest approach. Instruments collect their planned sequence as the spacecraft moves rapidly past the body. Images reveal overall shape, craters, ridges, boulders and other surface features; the exact resolution depends on distance, pointing and instrument performance.
  5. Remote sensing and radio science. Infrared measurements record thermal emission, spectroscopy helps identify surface materials, and radio tracking detects the asteroid’s gravitational tug on the spacecraft. That tug can constrain the body’s mass when the tracking accuracy and encounter geometry support it. NASA summarizes Lucy’s payload and these measurement goals in its science and instruments description (NASA’s Lucy mission science and instruments).
  6. Data storage and downlink. The spacecraft stores observations during the pass and transmits them later when the communication link and pointing are available. A successful flyby therefore does not mean every image is immediately on Earth; data return is a separate operations phase.
  7. Departure and retargeting. After the encounter, navigation teams determine how closely the spacecraft followed the intended path and calculate any correction needed for the next asteroid or planetary assist.

Lucy: a concrete multi-asteroid tour

Lucy was designed to travel from the main asteroid belt to the Trojan populations near Jupiter, making close encounters along the way. Its first asteroid encounter was Dinkinesh in November 2023. NASA reported that the spacecraft also observed Dinkinesh’s small satellite, later named Selam, turning the encounter into an opportunity to test operations and investigate a binary system (NASA’s Lucy mission overview).

In April 2025, Lucy flew past Donaldjohanson. NASA characterized that event as a rehearsal for the principal Trojan campaign, allowing the team to exercise the approach, pointing, imaging and data-handling sequence before the more distant encounters (NASA’s second-asteroid-encounter update).

Target totals must be read with their date and source. NASA launch-era material from 2021 described one main-belt asteroid and seven Trojans. Later planning material described two main-belt asteroids and seven Trojans. The NASA fiscal-year 2026 budget technical supplement, published in 2025, states that Lucy’s 12-year primary mission will fly by two main-belt asteroids and seven Trojan asteroids (NASA FY2026 budget technical supplement). That is a planning statement, not a claim that every listed encounter has already been completed. For completed encounters, remaining targets and dates, use the live mission page rather than an older launch announcement.

How targets and plans can change

Asteroid tours are built from predictions. New observations can improve an asteroid’s orbit, reveal a companion, or show that an apparent opportunity is less useful than expected. Engineers can also discover additional candidates by comparing the spacecraft’s evolving path with catalogs of known asteroid orbits. NASA describes this process in its account of how Lucy’s trajectory created opportunities for additional targets (NASA’s Lucy target-selection article).

A target change is not a casual substitution. The replacement must be reachable with the remaining propellant, fit the spacecraft’s pointing and thermal constraints, offer a safe approach corridor and still support the mission’s science goals. A newly recognized satellite can also become a high-value target without changing the primary asteroid encounter, as Dinkinesh and Selam demonstrated.

What limits the science from a flyby?

  • Time: the spacecraft is near the target for a short interval, so instruments cannot repeat observations indefinitely or wait for ideal lighting.
  • Geometry: one approach direction and one departure direction limit the range of viewing angles, phase angles and altitudes.
  • Navigation uncertainty: an error in the asteroid’s predicted position or spacecraft trajectory can change the closest-approach distance and image scale.
  • Communications delay: commands and data may take substantial time to travel, so encounter sequences are prepared in advance and monitored through scheduled links.
  • Propellant margin: every correction and gravity-assist maneuver must preserve enough capability for later encounters and safe spacecraft operations.

These limits explain why a flyby produces a reconnaissance-style data set rather than the continuous global map an orbiter can build. They do not make the observations superficial: combining shape, surface imaging, thermal emission, composition indicators and mass estimates across different bodies can reveal similarities and differences that no single asteroid can provide.

How to evaluate any proposed multi-asteroid mission

When reading a mission announcement, check four questions instead of focusing only on the number of targets:

  • Which populations are represented? Several asteroids from one orbital family answer a different question from a tour spanning the main belt and Trojan regions.
  • Are the encounters flybys or rendezvous? A close image-taking pass does not mean the spacecraft was captured into orbit.
  • What is the dated schedule? Launch-era target lists can differ from later plans as navigation opportunities and science priorities evolve.
  • What measurements are planned? Cameras, thermal sensors, spectrometers and radio tracking support different conclusions, and not every spacecraft carries the same combination.

The central idea is simple: a spacecraft reaches multiple asteroids by arranging a chain of timed intersections in solar orbit, using gravity assists and small corrections when useful, then performing focused flybys rather than repeated orbit insertions. The result is breadth across several worlds, traded against the long-duration detail that a dedicated orbiter, lander or sample-return mission could provide.
