How Do Scientists Take Pictures of Black Holes?

Scientists do not point an ordinary camera at a black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) combines observations from millimeter-wave radio observatories distributed around Earth. This very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) makes the planet act like a single, Earth-sized telescope. Computers then calibrate the recorded signals and reconstruct the glowing emission around the black hole. The dark center in the result is the black hole’s shadow—not a photograph of the event horizon itself.

What scientists actually photograph

A black hole emits no light from inside its event horizon, so a conventional photograph of the horizon is impossible. What the EHT records is millimeter-wavelength radio emission from extremely hot gas and other material orbiting close to the black hole. Gravity bends that radiation and captures some of it, producing a dark region surrounded by brighter emission.

That dark region is called the black hole’s shadow. It is an effect of the black hole’s gravity on light, seen against the surrounding emission. The picture is therefore a computationally reconstructed radio image of the shadow and its environment. It is not an image of a glowing event horizon and not a single frame exposed by a camera.

The distinction matters because the published image combines measurements, calibration, mathematical reconstruction and physical interpretation. The result is still an image in the ordinary sense—EHT project director Sheperd S. Doeleman described the 2019 result as “the first picture of a black hole”—but the instrument and image-making process are unlike those used by an optical camera.

Why the Event Horizon Telescope is needed

Even the largest known black holes occupy a tiny angle on the sky. To resolve detail that small, an instrument needs both a short observing wavelength and an enormous effective aperture. The EHT obtains that aperture without building one dish the size of Earth.

A planet-sized virtual telescope

The EHT is a network of radio observatories separated by thousands of kilometres. Each site measures the incoming radio waves from the target. The sites are not physically connected into one dish; their coordinated observations are combined later using very-long-baseline interferometry.

In an interferometer, the greatest distance between observing stations—the baseline—sets the scale of the finest detail that can be distinguished. A longer baseline improves resolving power. A shorter wavelength also improves it. With stations spread across Earth and observations at millimeter wavelengths, the EHT creates the theoretical resolving power needed to examine emission on the scale of a black hole’s event-horizon region.

Why millimeter radio waves

The 2017 observations of M87* were made at a wavelength of 1.3 millimeters. At this wavelength, radio waves can pass through some of the obscuring material that interferes with observations at other wavelengths, while the Earth-scale baselines provide exceptionally fine angular resolution.

The EHT’s reported resolution for the 2019 M87 result was about 20 microarcseconds. A microarcsecond is one-millionth of an arcsecond, so this is an angle far too small for an ordinary telescope to resolve. The M87 image analysis measured a ring diameter of approximately 40 microarcseconds.

How an EHT black-hole image is made

The process is a chain of observations and analysis rather than one exposure. Each stage supplies information needed by the next.

1. Select a target large enough to resolve

The collaboration chooses a black hole whose apparent size is large enough for an Earth-scale array to distinguish its surrounding emission. The first successful targets were the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87, designated M87*, and Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of the Milky Way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Size here means apparent angular size, not simply mass. A very massive object can still look too small if it is far away. M87* is about 55 million light-years from Earth and has a mass of roughly 6.5 billion Suns. Sgr A* is much closer because it is in our own galaxy, but it is far less massive. Both present an event-horizon-scale target that the EHT can investigate.

2. Observe the radio emission

During an observing campaign, participating stations point at the target and record the millimeter radio signal. For M87*, the landmark campaign used the 1.3-mm band. The observatories collect measurements at the same time so that the signals can later be compared as if they had been gathered by different parts of one enormous instrument.

The EHT FAQ reports five observing nights in each of the 2017 and 2018 campaigns, with about eight hours of observing per telescope per night. Those figures describe organized observing runs, not the entire history of the project. The collaboration says its development spans more than 20 years.

3. Combine separated measurements with VLBI

Because the dishes are thousands of kilometres apart, each one samples the incoming wavefront from a different location. The differences among those measurements contain information about the structure of the radio source. VLBI combines the separated samples mathematically, using the known geometry and timing of the observations, to produce the data products needed for imaging.

The result is not a complete, direct picture in the way a camera sensor records every pixel. It is a set of measurements that constrain what the source must look like. Gaps in the measurements mean that imaging methods are needed to infer a plausible brightness distribution.

4. Calibrate the recorded data

Raw signals contain effects from the instruments, atmosphere, observing conditions and the receiving systems at each station. Processing teams calibrate the data so that differences caused by the equipment are separated from differences that represent the astronomical source.

The calibrated measurements are then sent through analysis pipelines. Calibration does not create the ring; it makes the measurements internally consistent enough for independent imaging teams to test whether a ring-like structure is supported by the data.

5. Reconstruct images computationally

Researchers use imaging algorithms to turn the calibrated interferometric measurements into an image. The 2019 M87 study deliberately used multiple approaches. Four teams worked independently, applying both the CLEAN family of methods and regularized maximum-likelihood methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These methods solve an inverse problem: starting with incomplete measurements, they search for an image whose predicted interferometric data match the observations. Regularization and other constraints prevent the reconstruction from fitting noise or producing implausible fine detail. Teams also tested their settings against synthetic data to see how reliably the procedures could recover known structures.

6. Compare independent results

The collaboration did not rely on one algorithm or one team. For M87*, the ring-like structure appeared in independent reconstructions and on separate observing nights. The measured ring diameter and its asymmetry remained stable across the tested imaging methods. That agreement is a key reason scientists regard the broad structure as a property of the source rather than an artifact of a particular software choice.

Agreement does not mean every pixel is equally certain. The M87 analysis notes that some image features depend on imaging assumptions. Fine brightness variations should therefore be interpreted more cautiously than robust properties such as the overall ring diameter and asymmetry.

What the dark center means

The dark center is the shadow produced when gravity bends and captures light around the black hole. The surrounding bright emission comes from hot material near the object. Depending on the viewing geometry and the motion of that material, one side can appear brighter than the other because the emitting plasma is moving rapidly and the radiation is affected by relativistic effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The event horizon itself is not a bright surface. It is the boundary beyond which light cannot escape to a distant observer. The EHT image shows the observable consequences of that boundary—especially the central deficit in emission—not a surface that was directly illuminated and photographed.

Heino Falcke, chair of the EHT Science Council, described the expected appearance as a dark region similar to a shadow when a black hole is immersed in a bright region such as a glowing disk. That prediction follows from general relativity and is what the observations test.

The two landmark black-hole images

Feature M87* Sagittarius A*
Announcement 2019, the collaboration’s first black-hole image 2022, the first image of the Milky Way’s central black hole
Location Center of the galaxy Messier 87, about 55 million light-years away Center of the Milky Way
Approximate mass About 6.5 billion solar masses Not stated in the supplied EHT/NSF material used here
Observing and imaging context The 2017 campaign produced the ring image; the reported observing wavelength was 1.3 mm The released result is an average of images extracted from 2017 observations
Why the presentation differs The ring structure was stable across independent reconstructions and observing nights Sgr A* is a dynamic source, so the published image represents averaged reconstructions rather than one instantaneous snapshot

The same VLBI principle underlies both results, but the pictures are not the same observation and do not show the same object. M87* is much farther away and vastly more massive. Sgr A* changes on shorter timescales from our viewpoint, which makes a single sharp snapshot more difficult to define. Averaging reconstructions from the 2017 data gives a representative view of its emission rather than claiming that the source remained fixed during the observations.

How scientists check that the image is trustworthy

  • Independent teams: Separate groups reconstruct the data without relying on one shared image-making decision.
  • Different algorithms: CLEAN and regularized maximum-likelihood approaches test whether the main structure survives changes in mathematical method.
  • Multiple nights: For M87*, the ring persists across the 2017 observations rather than appearing in only one night’s data.
  • Synthetic-data tests: Imaging settings are tested on simulated measurements whose underlying structure is known.
  • Stable measurements: The M87 ring diameter and asymmetry remain consistent across the tested reconstructions, even though some detailed features vary with assumptions.

These checks address a central limitation of interferometric imaging: the data do not directly provide every point in an image. Reproducibility across methods and tests is therefore part of the scientific result.

Why ordinary telescopes cannot reproduce the picture

A consumer camera or a conventional backyard telescope does not have the necessary combination of wavelength, sensitivity, baseline and coordinated recording. The EHT depends on professional radio observatories distributed across the planet, a synchronized observing campaign, specialized data processing and collaboration-wide analysis.

The limiting challenge is angular resolution. Increasing magnification on a small telescope does not create new detail; the telescope’s physical aperture still limits what it can distinguish. The EHT’s effective aperture is the separation between distant stations, giving it an Earth-scale baseline that no single consumer instrument can match.

What “a picture” should and should not imply

  • It does show reconstructed millimeter radio emission around a black hole and the resulting shadow.
  • It does provide measurable properties, including M87’s approximately 40-microarcsecond ring diameter.
  • It does not show the event horizon as a luminous object.
  • It does not come from one camera exposure or one algorithm.
  • It does not mean every small brightness feature is equally certain.

The EHT FAQ’s wording—whether scientists can “really photograph a black hole”—has a practical answer: yes, if “photograph” means reconstructing an image from coordinated radio measurements. No, if it means directly seeing light emitted from inside the event horizon or pointing a normal camera at a black disk.

The scale of the collaboration

This capability is the product of a large international effort. The EHT FAQ describes more than 200 researchers and engineers from 20 countries and regions. It separately states that the main scientific publication had 347 coauthors. Those are different counts: the first describes the broader project workforce, while the second refers to authors on the publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The long development period, global station network and independent analysis teams are essential to the result. The image is not the output of a single observatory or a lone computer model; it is the outcome of coordinated measurement and cross-checked reconstruction.

Bottom line: a black-hole image is measured, reconstructed evidence

Scientists “take pictures” of black holes by combining millimeter radio observations from widely separated observatories with VLBI. Earth-sized baselines provide the resolution, calibration turns raw measurements into usable data, and independent imaging methods reconstruct the surrounding emission. The dark center is the gravitational shadow predicted by general relativity. M87*’s 2019 image established the first landmark result; Sgr A*’s 2022 image extended the method to the changing black hole at the Milky Way’s center.
