The same observations must also be compared with black holes and other ordinary astrophysical explanations. No confirmed wormhole observation is established by the cited literature; the published work describes proposed tests, simulations and searches for related effects.
What scientists would actually look for
A wormhole is a hypothetical spacetime structure connecting two separated regions. Because its interior would not necessarily be visible, an observer would usually have to infer its presence from an external effect. This is similar to how astronomers study black holes: the object itself is dark, but its gravity can alter the motion of stars, heat gas into bright radiation, bend background light and shape gravitational-wave signals.

There is an important difference between a general idea and an observational test. “Wormhole” does not describe one unique object. Predictions vary with the throat geometry, mass, rotation, stability, matter content and whether the passage is traversable. A proposed signal from an Ellis wormhole, for example, is not automatically a prediction for every traversable or non-traversable wormhole.

- Choose a mathematical model. Researchers specify the spacetime geometry and the matter or energy needed to support it.
- Calculate an observable. This might be a changing brightness, an image or ring, a stellar orbit, an X-ray spectrum or a gravitational-wave waveform.
- Generate competing predictions. A black hole, neutron star, ordinary gravitational lens or another compact object may produce a similar effect.
- Compare with data. The measurement must have enough precision and coverage to distinguish the models rather than merely look unusual.
- Check the result independently. A credible claim would need repeated or independent observations and a quantitative fit that survives alternative explanations.
This is why a striking image or an unusual signal would not, by itself, establish a wormhole.
Gravitational lensing and microlensing
How the measurement works
Gravity bends the path of light. When a compact object passes near the line of sight to a more distant source, the source can brighten, split into multiple images or form an arc or ring. Astronomers can measure the light curve, image positions, angular separations and, in favorable cases, the structure of an Einstein ring.
For a proposed wormhole, scientists calculate those quantities from the chosen metric and compare them with a black-hole lens or another mass distribution. The result is not a universal “wormhole pattern”; it is a prediction tied to that geometry.

Cramer and collaborators’ 1995 paper, Natural wormholes as gravitational lenses, examined a hypothetical wormhole mouth with an unusual, negative-mass lensing behavior. Their model produced a qualitatively different microlensing time profile from the standard brightening expected for an ordinary positive-mass lens. Detecting such a light curve would be interesting, but the interpretation would still depend on whether the assumed wormhole model and its physical conditions were justified.
Einstein-ring comparisons
A 2012 study by Tsukamoto and colleagues compared the Einstein-ring systems of a Schwarzschild black hole and an Ellis wormhole. The work calculated how ring structures could differ in principle. Those differences are useful targets for high-resolution imaging, yet they apply to the particular black-hole and Ellis-wormhole configurations studied. A ring that does not match one model would not automatically prove another wormhole model.

What lensing can and cannot establish
- Observable: brightness versus time, image configuration or ring shape.
- Potential advantage: light can reveal a compact object without requiring it to emit its own radiation.
- Main difficulty: ordinary stars, black holes, galaxies and complex line-of-sight structures can also produce lensing signatures.
- Current status: the cited papers are theoretical proposals and model comparisons, not confirmed wormhole identifications.
Tracking stars and other nearby objects
The S2 example near Sagittarius A*
Precision astrometry and spectroscopy can reveal an unseen gravitational influence through an object’s orbit. If a star repeatedly deviates from the trajectory predicted by known masses and relativistic effects, astronomers can investigate what additional source could cause the acceleration.
Dai and Stojkovic’s 2019 paper, Observing a wormhole, proposed a specific scenario involving a traversable wormhole near Sagittarius A*, the compact object at the center of the Milky Way. In their example, a star on the far side of the wormhole could gravitationally influence our region and leave an imprint on the orbit of S2, a well-studied star orbiting Sagittarius A*.

That requirement is a conditional forecast from the model, not a precision already demonstrated as a wormhole detection and not evidence that Sagittarius A* contains a wormhole.
How an orbital test would be evaluated
- Measure the target star’s position and velocity over repeated orbital phases.
- Fit the data with the central black-hole mass, known stars, relativistic corrections and instrumental systematics.
- Test whether a residual acceleration remains statistically significant.
- Compare that residual with the gravitational field predicted by the proposed object on the other side of a wormhole.
- Check alternatives such as an unseen ordinary star, an extended mass distribution, calibration error or an incorrect model of the Galactic-center environment.
An unexplained orbital residual would be evidence for missing physics or mass, not a wormhole label by itself. The geometry would have to predict the residual’s direction, time dependence and strength better than competing explanations.
X-ray reflection from hot accretion disks
Why X-rays carry information
Gas spiraling toward a compact object can form a hot, thin accretion disk. The disk emits X-rays, and some of that radiation reflects from the disk before reaching Earth. Strong gravity changes the energy, timing and apparent shape of emission features, including iron fluorescence lines.

Researchers can calculate a predicted reflection spectrum for a compact-object geometry and fit it to X-ray observations. The useful information is not simply whether the source is bright. It is the detailed energy profile, skewness, broadening and relative strength of spectral features.

Rotating Ellis-wormhole calculations
A 2016 preprint by Bambi studied X-ray reflection spectra from a thin accretion disk around rotating Ellis wormholes. The calculations identified possible iron-line-profile differences from those expected for a Kerr black hole. Such differences could motivate a targeted comparison when a source has high-quality X-ray data.
The result remains theoretical modeling. The preprint does not report an observed source identified as a wormhole. In practice, disk temperature, inclination, ionization, magnetic effects, absorption and instrument calibration can alter a spectrum, so a claimed distinction would require fitting all of those factors rather than matching one line feature.
Gravitational waves: intrinsic signals and lensing
Comparing compact-object waveforms
A wormhole model could alter the inspiral, merger or post-merger gravitational-wave signal relative to a binary black-hole model. Researchers can calculate the predicted waveform, including the late-time ringing known as quasi-normal-mode behavior, and search detector data for mismatches.
However, a familiar black-hole-like waveform does not rule out every wormhole. Damour and Solodukhin’s 2007 paper, Wormholes as black hole foils, showed that a globally static wormhole could mimic several anticipated black-hole properties, including accretion behavior and quasi-normal-mode ringing. This is a warning against treating one successful black-hole fit as a definitive classification test in either direction.

Gravitational-wave lensing searches
Gravitational waves can also be lensed while traveling from a merger to Earth. A galaxy-scale lens could create multiple similar events separated in time. A smaller lens could produce interference or frequency-dependent distortions in the waveform. LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA analyses search for these repeated signals and waveform patterns.
The collaboration’s O3 lensing summary and a NASA Technical Reports Server paper on the O3a analysis reported no compelling evidence for lensing in the examined data. Those results address whether gravitational-wave paths were lensed; they are not a dedicated detection of a wormhole. Even if lensing were found, the lens would still need to be identified. A galaxy, black hole or another mass could produce it, and a wormhole would be only one hypothesis requiring additional evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a black-hole-like observation is not enough
Wormholes and black holes can overlap observationally. A compact object that accretes gas, bends light and produces ringing can fit more than one model, especially when observations cover only a limited range of angles, frequencies or times.
The comparison problem has several layers:
- Geometry: different wormhole metrics predict different photon paths, redshifts and orbital dynamics.
- Physical support: traversable models may require unusual matter or energy conditions, while other models are not traversable.
- Environment: gas turbulence, magnetic fields, nearby stars and intervening matter can imitate or hide a small effect.
- Instrument limits: finite angular resolution, detector noise and calibration errors can erase the distinction between models.
- Parameter flexibility: changing mass, spin, inclination or source distance can allow a conventional black-hole model to reproduce an apparently unusual signal.
For these reasons, scientists would not infer a wormhole from one residual, one spectrum or one image. They would ask whether one wormhole model explains several independent observables with fewer unresolved problems than the best conventional model.
How a credible detection claim would be built
1. A fully specified prediction
The authors would need to state the metric, mass, rotation, throat properties, matter content and viewing geometry. “A wormhole could do this” is not testable until those choices produce numerical predictions.
Best Value
2. A distinctive, reproducible signal
The proposed effect should be stronger or shaped differently than the prediction from a black hole and other astrophysical sources. It should also be measurable again, either in another epoch, another wavelength or another event.
3. Quantitative model comparison
Analyses should fit competing hypotheses to the same data, report uncertainties and show how sensitive the result is to assumptions about the source and instrument. A visual resemblance is weaker evidence than a statistically supported difference in likelihood or residual structure.
4. Independent observations
A lensing candidate could be checked with additional imaging or spectroscopy. An orbital anomaly could be followed through another part of the orbit. An X-ray feature could be tested with a separate observation or instrument. A gravitational-wave interpretation could be compared across detectors and future events.
5. Physical consistency
The proposed object must be consistent with its environment and with the theory used to describe it. Stability, energy requirements and the behavior of matter near the throat would matter as much as the initial fit to the data.
How the proposed methods differ

| Stellar dynamics | Positions, velocities and orbital accelerations | Traversable wormhole influencing S2 near Sagittarius A* | Unseen star, distributed mass or modeling error | Conditional proposal with a prospective precision requirement |
| X-ray reflection | Energy profile of reflected X-rays and iron lines | Rotating Ellis wormhole with a thin accretion disk | Kerr black hole and disk-physics alternatives | Theoretical preprint |
| Gravitational-wave waveform | Inspiral, merger and post-merger signal | Specified wormhole compact-object model | Binary black-hole waveform | Model-dependent avenue |
| Gravitational-wave lensing | Repeated events or interference patterns | Lensing by a compact or galaxy-scale object | Unlensed propagation and conventional lenses | O3/O3a analyses found no compelling lensing evidence in the examined data |
So, can scientists detect a wormhole?
In principle, they could detect evidence consistent with a wormhole if a model produced a distinctive effect that survived comparison with black holes and every credible astrophysical alternative. The practical searches are indirect: lensing examines how light travels, orbital studies examine gravity’s pull on nearby objects, X-ray spectroscopy examines radiation from hot gas, and gravitational-wave analysis examines spacetime vibrations and their propagation.
At present, the cited literature does not establish a confirmed wormhole. It demonstrates ways to turn a hypothetical geometry into an observational test, while also showing why the standard of proof must be high. A convincing discovery would require a specific model, a reproducible signal, strong quantitative separation from black-hole explanations and independent observations that point to the same spacetime structure.
