How Do Scientists Measure the Speed and Wavelength of Light?

Scientists answer two different questions when they talk about measuring light. The speed of light in vacuum is now an exact defined value: 299,792,458 meters per second. The number is not a claim that a stopwatch can determine it with zero uncertainty; the International System of Units (SI) fixes that value and defines the meter through it. Experiments instead realize the meter, test measurement systems, or study how light propagates in materials.

The wavelength of a particular source, such as a laser, remains an experimental quantity. It can be found from a known diffraction-grating spacing and measured angle, or from a measured optical frequency using the wave relation c = fλ in vacuum. Those methods require different references and have different sources of error.

What “measuring the speed of light” means today

In vacuum, light travels at exactly 299,792,458 m/s by SI definition. The meter is the distance light travels in vacuum during a specified fraction of a second, using that fixed speed. Consequently, scientists are not waiting for a better experiment to change the vacuum value of c. A laboratory can still measure a time interval, a distance, a frequency, or a wavelength with uncertainty, but those measurements are interpreted within the defined system.

This distinction matters when reading older results. Before the meter was tied to a fixed value of c, experiments treated the speed as an unknown to be estimated. Modern experiments use the defined value to realize lengths and calibrate instruments, while investigating propagation in materials or checking how accurately a practical system reproduces SI units.

How the speed was determined historically

Timing a journey over a known distance

The direct idea is simple: send a light signal over a measured baseline, record the travel time, and calculate

speed = distance ÷ time.

Astronomers first inferred that light has a finite speed by comparing the timing of astronomical events observed from different positions. The baseline was effectively astronomical, so the travel time was large enough to reveal a delay. This approach established finiteness before instruments could resolve the tiny time needed for a terrestrial experiment.

Long-baseline terrestrial experiments

Later experiments brought the measurement to Earth. A source sent light to a distant reflector and a detector compared the returning signal with the outgoing one. Because the flight time over a laboratory-scale distance is extremely short, experimenters used long baselines and devices that converted a time delay into a visible shift. Historical apparatus included rotating toothed wheels that alternately passed and blocked the beam, and rotating mirrors that deflected the returning light by an angle related to the mirror’s speed.

Every version followed the same chain: establish the baseline, establish a time reference or rotation rate, observe the delayed signal, and calculate the ratio. The limiting factors were timing resolution, knowledge of the baseline, alignment, beam quality, and calibration of the moving or timing mechanism. A historical result therefore carried an uncertainty even though the underlying speed was a well-defined physical quantity.

Using frequency and wavelength instead

c = fλ

  • c is the vacuum speed of light.
  • f is frequency, the number of cycles per second in hertz.
  • λ is wavelength, the distance between corresponding points of successive cycles.

Historically, measuring both f and λ supplied an independent estimate of c. Improving either measurement improved the result. Optical frequency was especially difficult because visible and near-infrared frequencies are hundreds of terahertz, far above the rate that ordinary electronic counters can count directly.

Stabilized lasers and the 1972 NIST result

Laser stabilization provided a source whose frequency could be controlled and compared more reliably than that of a broad, drifting light source. NIST reports the following stabilized-laser result from 1972:

299,792,456.2 ± 1.1 meters per second — National Institute of Standards and Technology, 1972 measurement.

The uncertainty belongs to that historical measurement; it is not an uncertainty attached to the present SI-defined value. Results of this kind helped make a fixed value of c practical for defining the meter.

Optical frequency combs

An optical frequency comb produces a set of precisely spaced optical frequencies. By connecting those frequencies to a microwave or radio-frequency reference that electronics can count, a comb creates a chain between optical oscillations and a measurable timebase. This lets laboratories determine an optical frequency with far greater precision and compare frequencies across widely separated parts of the spectrum.

In a modern frequency-based measurement, the reference is a calibrated frequency standard, the observation is an optical frequency (often from a stabilized laser), and the principal limits come from the stability of the source, the reference, and the transfer chain. The experiment may then calculate a wavelength, realize a length, or characterize a source; it is not an attempt to discover a new vacuum value for c.

How to measure the wavelength of a laser with a diffraction grating

A diffraction-grating experiment is the most accessible way to determine a laser’s wavelength. It works because a grating has many equally spaced lines. Light from adjacent lines interferes constructively only at particular angles, producing bright spots called diffraction orders.

Equipment and prerequisites

  • A coherent, nearly monochromatic laser.
  • A diffraction grating with a known line spacing d (or a stated number of lines per unit length).
  • A screen or white card far enough away for spots to separate clearly.
  • A ruler or tape measure and a stable mount or holders.
  • Protective measures appropriate to the laser class and local rules.

If a grating is specified by N lines per meter, its spacing is d = 1/N. Keep units consistent: a spacing in millimeters must be converted to meters if the wavelength is required in meters.

Set up the geometry

  1. Fix the laser so its beam is horizontal and cannot sweep across people.
  2. Place the grating perpendicular to the incident beam as closely as practical.
  3. Put the screen behind the grating and mark the central bright spot, the zero order.
  4. Mark the first, second, or higher bright spots on both sides. Use an order that is distinct but not so faint that its position is ambiguous.
  5. Measure the screen distance L from the grating to the screen and the transverse displacement x from the central spot to the selected order.

Calculate the angle and wavelength

The grating equation is

nλ = d sinθ

Here, n is the diffraction order (1, 2, 3, …), d is the line spacing, and θ is the angle between the central beam direction and the selected bright order. If you measured a screen displacement instead of an angle, use the right-triangle geometry

sinθ = x ÷ √(x2 + L2)

Then rearrange the grating equation:

λ = d sinθ ÷ n

For an illustrative calculation only, a grating with 600,000 lines per meter has d = 1.667 × 10−6 m. If a first-order spot is measured at θ = 20°, the calculated wavelength is about 5.70 × 10−7 m, or 570 nm. A real result should retain the measured geometry and an uncertainty rather than report more digits than the setup supports.

Improve repeatability

  • Measure spots on both sides of the central maximum and average the corresponding distances.
  • Use several orders when they are visible; calculate each wavelength and check whether the values agree.
  • Measure from the grating plane, not from the edge of a holder.
  • Keep the screen perpendicular to the central beam and avoid parallax when reading the ruler.
  • Use the grating’s calibration information; an unverified line count creates a systematic error in every result.
  • Report the order, spacing, geometry, calculated angle, and sensible rounding.

Alignment and geometry usually dominate a classroom setup’s uncertainty. A grating with an inaccurately stated spacing, a screen that is not square to the beam, or an incorrectly identified order can shift the answer even when the arithmetic is flawless.

Vacuum wavelength versus wavelength in a material

The equation c = fλ applies when the wave is propagating in vacuum. In a material, use that material’s propagation speed and wavelength:

v = fλmaterial

The frequency is tied to the source, while the propagation speed and wavelength depend on the medium. Therefore, a wavelength measured inside glass, air, water, or another material should not be presented as the vacuum wavelength without accounting for the medium and the measurement conditions. The grating procedure normally measures the wavelength of the beam in the surrounding medium, which is effectively air in an ordinary classroom; its result should be labeled accordingly when high accuracy matters.

How the main methods compare

Method What is observed Required reference Main limitations
Time of flight Arrival-time difference after a known journey Measured baseline and a calibrated timebase or rotation rate Very small terrestrial travel times, timing resolution, alignment, and baseline uncertainty
Frequency × wavelength Optical frequency and wavelength Frequency standard, wavelength reference, or both Optical frequencies are hard to count directly; source stability and calibration matter
Diffraction grating Angles or screen positions of bright orders Known grating spacing and measured geometry Alignment, spot identification, ruler resolution, and grating calibration
Optical frequency comb Precisely spaced optical modes linked to a countable reference Microwave or radio-frequency reference and a stabilized optical source Reference stability, comb transfer, and laboratory calibration

Safety and what a home or classroom setup can—and cannot—show

Use the laser’s labeling and the safety directions supplied for the equipment and jurisdiction. Pearson’s practical describes a Class 2 laser with a maximum output of 1 mW and warns against accidental eye exposure. Never look into the beam, aim it at a person, or place shiny surfaces where an unexpected reflection can enter an eye. Secure the laser and terminate the beam when measurements are finished.

A known-spacing diffraction grating or a laser diffraction grating kit can make the wavelength demonstration repeatable. It is an educational measurement, not research-grade metrology. A handheld spectroscope is useful for seeing spectral lines and comparing sources, but treat it as an observation tool unless its wavelength calibration and measurement performance are documented.

The experiment also does not directly measure the vacuum speed of light. It determines a source wavelength from diffraction. To obtain a speed from c = fλ, you would additionally need a trustworthy frequency measurement and a clear statement of whether the wavelength is a vacuum value or a value in a medium.

Choosing the right approach

If your goal is to understand the historical speed measurement

Study the time-of-flight logic: known distance, measured delay, and division. Astronomical observations made the delay observable first; long-baseline terrestrial devices then transformed tiny delays into mechanical or optical changes.

If your goal is to identify a laser’s color quantitatively

Use a calibrated diffraction grating, measure several orders and both sides of the central maximum, and apply nλ = d sinθ. Record the spacing and geometry so another person can reproduce the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your goal is high-precision optical metrology

Use a stabilized source, a calibrated frequency reference, and—when the optical frequency must be counted—an optical frequency comb. The result is limited by the complete reference chain, not merely by the number of digits displayed by an instrument.
