How Do Scientists Detect Water on the Moon Compared With Mars?

How do scientists detect water on the Moon compared with Mars? They rarely photograph a lake or puddle. Instead, spacecraft measure indirect clues—infrared absorption, hydrogen-rich soil, radar reflections, or minerals altered by water—and scientists test those clues against geology and observations from other instruments. The Moon’s investigations emphasize surface spectroscopy, neutron mapping and planned drilling; Mars adds extensive mineral spectroscopy, orbital neutron and gamma-ray surveys, and subsurface radar. None of those signals, by itself, uniquely proves present-day liquid water.

What “detecting water” means on another world

A detector usually measures a physical effect caused by water or by hydrogen, rather than measuring a bottle of H2O directly. Water ice, isolated water molecules, hydroxyl (OH), hydrated minerals, hydrated salts and liquid brine can produce different signals. Hydrogen is especially useful because every water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms, but hydrogen can also be bound in hydroxyl or other compounds.

Scientists therefore combine four questions:

  • What did the instrument actually measure—light, neutrons, gamma rays, or radio echoes?
  • What materials could create that signal under the local temperature, pressure and geology?
  • Does another instrument or an observation at a different time support the interpretation?
  • Can a lander, rover or drilled sample test the material close up?

This approach matters on both worlds, but their environments and available instruments are different. The airless Moon preserves exposed minerals and shadowed cold traps, while Mars has an atmosphere, seasonal processes, buried ice and a much more varied record of water-altered rocks.

How scientists look for water on the Moon

Infrared spectroscopy reveals surface chemistry

A spectrometer separates reflected or emitted light into many wavelengths. Molecules and minerals absorb particular wavelengths, producing patterns that can be compared with laboratory measurements and models. India’s Chandrayaan-1 carried NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), which measured reflected infrared light from lunar orbit.

NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported absorption patterns consistent with water molecules and hydroxyl in the uppermost lunar surface. In that result, “water” did not mean a visible pool or a layer of liquid. It referred to molecules interacting with lunar rock and dust. Earlier lunar hydration measurements could not always distinguish H2O from OH; that chemical distinction is essential because hydroxyl is not water ice or liquid water.

Spectroscopy is powerful for identifying what is exposed at the surface, but it has limits. A signal can be weak, mixed with other minerals, affected by illumination and temperature, or confined to a thin layer. Spectral evidence becomes more persuasive when it agrees with neutron data, local geology and measurements made at different times.

Neutrons map hydrogen beneath the surface

Cosmic radiation strikes the Moon and generates neutrons in the soil. Hydrogen slows neutrons efficiently. By measuring the number and energy of neutrons escaping from the ground, an instrument can identify areas with more hydrogen than surrounding terrain.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter carries the Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND), which maps the distribution of hydrogen. The measurement is a proxy: it indicates hydrogen-rich material, not the exact molecule carrying that hydrogen. The source could be water ice, hydroxyl or another hydrogen-bearing compound.

NASA’s planned Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) is designed to add measurements at much smaller scales. Its Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS) is described as capable of sensing potential water-related hydrogen to about 3 feet (roughly 1 meter) below the lunar surface. That figure is an instrument capability in the mission plan, not a report of completed rover measurements.

Planned drilling can separate water from look-alikes

VIPER’s proposed workflow illustrates how scientists intend to resolve ambiguity. NSS would first locate a hydrogen-rich area. A drill would bring cuttings up from below the surface. Near-infrared spectroscopy and a mass spectrometer would then examine those cuttings for water, hydroxyl and other volatile compounds.

That sequence combines regional detection with chemical “ground truth.” It is particularly important because a neutron map averages material over an area and depth, whereas a drilled sample can reveal the actual minerals and volatile species at a specific location. Mission descriptions explain the planned instruments and operations; they should not be treated as findings already returned by the rover.

How scientists look for water on Mars

Neutron and gamma-ray surveys reveal hydrogen-rich ground

Mars Odyssey’s neutron and gamma-ray instruments map elemental composition over broad regions. Hydrogen changes the neutron signal, and in relevant near-surface Martian environments it is often interpreted as water ice. Gamma-ray measurements add information about elements in the soil.

These orbital maps are excellent for finding regional patterns and likely ground-ice zones, but they do not identify the physical form of every hydrogen atom. They also have limited spatial resolution compared with a rover’s instrument package. Local geology, temperature and seasonal behavior are needed to distinguish stable ice from other hydrogen-bearing material.

CRISM maps minerals altered by water

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) splits visible and near-infrared light into many bands. It maps hydrated minerals and other alteration products that form when rocks interact with water.

NASA reported hydrated-mineral signatures on slopes associated with seasonal dark streaks. CRISM did not photograph liquid flowing down those slopes. The interpretation combines mineral spectra with the feature’s location, season and observations from other instruments. A hydrated mineral can preserve evidence that water was present in the past without proving that liquid water is flowing there today.

NASA’s 2015 work on recurring slope features and hydrated salts was interpreted at the time as evidence consistent with seasonal briny flows. That interpretation remains historically important, but it should not be presented as an uncontested, general detection of present-day liquid water. Later work has emphasized uncertainty about how such streaks form and how much liquid, if any, is involved.

Radar sounding probes buried layers

Radar sounders transmit radio waves toward Mars and record echoes from boundaries between materials. The strength, timing and shape of an echo can reveal buried layers, ice-rich deposits or other reflectors.

Mars Express carries MARSIS, a low-frequency subsurface radar sounder. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory describes a 40-meter antenna and an investigation objective extending to about 5 kilometers into the subsurface. Those are instrument-description figures, not a guaranteed depth at which water can always be detected. Resolution and signal quality depend on frequency, terrain, material properties and geometry.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter carries SHARAD, a higher-frequency radar intended for shallower subsurface boundaries. NASA describes SHARAD radargrams from Utopia Planitia as evidence for an ice-rich deposit. Radar is especially useful for tracing the extent and thickness of buried ice, but a reflector does not automatically identify its composition.

Why a bright radar echo is not automatically a lake

Radar interpretation is an inference problem. A strong reflection can arise when radio waves encounter a boundary between materials with different electrical properties. Liquid water can produce a bright return under some conditions, but rock, dust, brine, ice interfaces and unusual layering can also affect reflectivity. The radar beam’s angle and the shape of the surface matter as well.

In 2021, the MARSIS team expanded its analysis to 44,000 measurements collected over 15 years. Researchers reported many additional bright echoes in places too cold for liquid water and said they were not certain whether the signals represented liquid water. The broader distribution made the original lake interpretation less straightforward.

A 2025 NASA/JPL reassessment provided another caution. A SHARAD target beneath an ice slab almost 1 mile (about 1,500 meters) thick and spanning roughly 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) had previously been interpreted as a possible buried lake. The newer analysis favored a layer of rock and dust. The dimensions describe the radar target’s geometry, not a confirmed reservoir.

As SHARAD scientist Than Putzig explained in NASA/JPL’s account, “If it’s ice, that means there’s lots of water resources near the Martian equator, where you’d want to send humans.” The conditional “if” is the scientific point: the material must be identified before resource conclusions are justified.

Moon and Mars: the detection toolkit compared

Evidence type Moon Mars
Light and mineral evidence Infrared absorption can indicate surface water molecules or hydroxyl, including signals measured by M3. Visible and near-infrared imaging spectroscopy, especially CRISM, maps hydrated minerals and other water-related alteration products.
Hydrogen mapping LEND maps orbital hydrogen patterns; VIPER’s planned NSS is intended to sense potential hydrogen-bearing material to about 3 feet (1 meter). Mars Odyssey neutron and gamma-ray instruments map hydrogen-rich ground, often interpreted as near-surface water ice in suitable regions.
Subsurface radar The cited lunar approach emphasizes neutron and spectral measurements, followed by planned drilling and local chemical analysis. MARSIS and SHARAD use radar echoes to investigate buried layers, ice-rich deposits and other subsurface reflectors.
Ground truth Planned drilling would expose cuttings for near-infrared and mass-spectrometer analysis. Landers and rovers can analyze local soil and rock, while orbital signals supply regional context.
Main interpretive caution Hydrogen is not uniquely water, and hydroxyl can resemble water in some measurements. Radar brightness and hydrated-mineral signatures do not, by themselves, prove present-day liquid water.

How scientists build a reliable case

1. Start with a measurable anomaly

An instrument first identifies something different from its surroundings: an infrared absorption band, a neutron deficit caused by hydrogen, a hydrated-mineral spectrum or a radar reflector. The initial result is a candidate signal, not a final diagnosis.

2. Test competing materials

Scientists compare the signal with laboratory spectra, radar models and known mineral behavior. For neutron data, they ask whether hydrogen could be in hydroxyl or another compound instead of water. For radar, they test whether rock, dust or ice interfaces could reproduce the echo.

3. Add geography, season and depth

Location and environmental conditions can eliminate explanations. A signal that appears only in a warm season differs from one buried beneath a stable polar deposit. Radar depth, mineral setting and the temperature of a suspected reservoir all affect whether liquid water is physically plausible.

4. Seek an independent measurement

Confidence increases when different techniques agree—for example, a neutron hydrogen anomaly coinciding with a spectroscopic water-related signal, or a radar layer matching an independently mapped ice deposit. Agreement does not make every interpretation certain, but it narrows the alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Confirm locally when possible

A rover, lander or drill can examine grains, minerals and volatiles directly. Local measurements resolve details that orbital instruments average over large areas. This is why planned lunar drilling and Martian surface missions are complementary to, rather than replacements for, orbital surveys.

What each method can—and cannot—establish

  • Infrared spectroscopy: identifies absorption patterns associated with water, hydroxyl or hydrated minerals at or near the surface; it does not automatically establish a liquid body.
  • Neutron measurements: locate hydrogen-rich material and can support an interpretation of water ice; they do not identify the hydrogen-bearing molecule alone.
  • Gamma-ray mapping: adds elemental-composition information over broad regions; it is not a close-up chemical assay of a particular ice grain.
  • Radar sounding: reveals subsurface boundaries and reflectors; a bright return is evidence to model, not a self-explanatory picture of a lake.
  • Mineral evidence: can show that water altered rock or formed hydrated salts; it may record ancient water rather than water present today.
  • Drilling and surface analysis: can distinguish compounds directly at a site, but only for the limited area and depth the mission can reach.

Why the Moon–Mars comparison matters for exploration

On the Moon, the central challenge is finding and characterizing volatile material in permanently or intermittently shadowed terrain and determining how it is distributed at useful scales. As NSS lead Rick Elphic said in a NASA account, “There is currently a gap in our understanding of how lunar ice is distributed at small scales, from 10s of centimeters up to 10s of kilometers.” Orbital maps can identify promising regions, while a rover and drill could show whether a specific patch contains accessible ice, hydroxyl or another compound.

Mars offers a richer set of orbital observations, including mineral maps and two generations of subsurface radar, but that variety also creates more ways to overinterpret an unusual signal. The 2021 MARSIS reassessment and the 2025 SHARAD result show why independent confirmation and geological modeling are necessary before calling a reflector a lake or a resource.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore graded rather than binary: a measurement can be consistent with water, provide evidence for hydrogen-bearing ice, identify a water-altered mineral, or establish a local composition through sampling. “Water detected” is meaningful only when the article or mission report specifies which of those claims the data actually support.
