How Do Scientists Detect Hawking Radiation in Laboratory Black Hole Analogues?

Scientists do not detect radiation from an astrophysical black hole in these experiments. They create an effective horizon for waves in a controlled medium, then measure how wave modes are converted, paired, shifted in frequency, or correlated across that boundary. Depending on the platform, the signal may be a classical surface-wave pattern, a quantum correlation in an ultracold gas, or stimulated emission caused by an intentionally supplied probe.

The central test is therefore operational: does a moving medium produce the mode mixing predicted for a horizon, including negative-frequency or negative-norm partner modes? Stronger claims require additional evidence such as cross-horizon correlations, entanglement, a thermal spectrum, or a measured analogue temperature. Every result must be identified by its platform and by whether the emission was spontaneous or stimulated.

What a laboratory black-hole analogue actually is

An analogue experiment replaces gravity with a medium whose waves obey equations that resemble those of fields near a gravitational horizon. The laboratory system can be an ultracold atomic gas, flowing water, a polariton fluid, or an optical fibre. No mass is compressed into a black hole, and no event horizon in spacetime is produced.

A horizon appears when the medium or an optical structure moves so that waves cannot propagate back across a particular boundary in the relevant frame. In a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), for example, sound-like disturbances are phonons. A sonic horizon forms where the condensate flow becomes faster than the local speed of sound: phonons on one side can be swept away instead of travelling upstream across the boundary. Water waves and light in fibres have different dispersion relations, so their effective horizons arise through their own moving-medium physics rather than through a literal gravitational field.

The analogy is mathematical and experimental. Researchers compare how modes scatter and mix at the boundary, not whether the apparatus contains an astrophysical object. Raul Aguero-Santacruz and David Bermudez’s 2024 review, Negative frequencies and negative norms in analogue Hawking radiation systems, describes water waves, BECs, polariton fluids and optical fibres as the four most successful experimental analogue systems.

Why negative-frequency and negative-norm modes matter

Hawking-like emission is a mode-conversion process. In a suitable description, an incoming wave can be converted into outgoing components with different frequency signs or norm signs. The negative-frequency or negative-norm partner is not a second ordinary beam with a negative number printed on a meter; it is a mode classification determined by the field’s conserved norm and by the Doppler shift between the laboratory frame and the moving medium.

The 2024 review argues that a static-frame analysis makes the relationship between norm sign and Doppler-shifted frequency especially clear. Detecting the corresponding partner mode supports the horizon-scattering picture because ordinary reflection alone does not reproduce the same mixing of positive- and negative-norm components.

How scientists turn a horizon into a measurement

Across platforms, an experiment follows the same broad logic, although the detector and observable differ.

  1. Create a controlled flow or moving structure. The apparatus is tuned so the propagation speed of the relevant waves changes relative to the flow, producing a subcritical region, a supercritical region, or an analogue white-hole configuration.
  2. Define the horizon and calibrate the background. Researchers measure the flow, density, refractive-index change or other parameters needed to establish where the effective boundary lies and what dispersion relation the waves follow.
  3. Prepare fluctuations or a probe. A BEC may be allowed to evolve with quantum and thermal fluctuations. A water experiment can launch a surface wave. An optical experiment may send a weak signal or a single heralded photon into the moving pulse.
  4. Resolve outgoing modes. Detectors record atomic-density images, surface elevation, optical spectra, arrival times or correlations. Fourier analysis separates the relevant frequencies and wavevectors.
  5. Compare with the horizon model and controls. A convincing interpretation checks the predicted mode conversion, partner mode, correlation shape or spectrum against measurements without the horizon and against alternative classical or technical-noise explanations.

The last step prevents a generic increase in fluctuations from being labelled Hawking radiation. The observable and the strength of the claim have to remain tied to the platform that produced them.

Platform Primary observable Type of evidence Important qualification
Ultracold atomic BEC Atomic-density fluctuations and cross-horizon correlation functions Mode pairs, reported entanglement, thermal spectra and analogue temperature in specific studies Interpretations concern the condensate’s sonic horizon, not an astrophysical black hole
Water waves Surface-wave scattering, frequency conversion and horizon effects Classical thermal aspects and stimulated Hawking-like emission Classical waves do not by themselves demonstrate quantum particle creation
Optical fibre Scattered light, frequency shifts and mode pairs Mode conversion and stimulated analogue emission The 2026 single-photon result is explicitly stimulated
Polariton fluid Fluid-wave and mode observables proposed for polariton systems Analogue-horizon theory and possible quantum signatures The 2024 review covers the platform; a cited 2025 spin-mode study is theoretical

Bose–Einstein condensates: density correlations across a sonic horizon

BEC experiments are the main setting for claims about quantum correlations. An ultracold atomic cloud is driven into a flowing state, and the velocity profile is arranged so that a sonic horizon separates regions of different flow regime. Imaging the atoms repeatedly gives a map of density fluctuations.

Scientists calculate correlation functions between fluctuations at different positions. A characteristic pair of correlated disturbances, with one member outside and the partner inside the horizon, is the key cross-horizon signature. The pattern is expected because the horizon mixes modes that would otherwise be independent. Measurements can also be analysed for entanglement, a thermal spectrum and an effective Hawking temperature.

The 2025 review by Paul Raymond Anderson, Roberto Balbinot, Richard Allen Dudley and Alessandro Fabbri, Looking for traces of Hawking radiation in correlation functions of BEC acoustic black holes, discusses the characteristic structures used in these correlation functions. Its references include experimental reports of quantum entanglement from 2016, thermal radiation and its temperature from 2019, and stationary spontaneous emission together with black-hole time evolution from 2021. Those are reported results of particular studies; they should not be converted into a claim that every BEC interpretation is universally uncontested.

In practice, the BEC analysis must separate a horizon-induced pair from ordinary density noise, finite-temperature excitations, imaging artefacts and the condensate’s changing background. Repeating the preparation and comparing correlation maps with models is therefore as important as seeing a single visually suggestive feature.

Water waves: measuring the classical analogue

In a water tank, a controlled current changes how surface waves propagate. Cameras, wave gauges or other surface measurements track the incoming and outgoing waves. Researchers examine reflected and transmitted components, frequency conversion and the behaviour near a blocking point or analogue white-hole horizon.

These experiments can reproduce classical counterparts of thermal spectra or stimulated Hawking emission. A 2024 Communications Physics paper, Observation of a phase space horizon with surface gravity water waves, reports a classical surface-gravity-wave experiment and a phase-space horizon. Such a result is valuable for testing horizon kinematics and wave scattering, but water waves are classical degrees of freedom in the apparatus. Their scattering does not, by itself, establish the creation of quantum particles or entanglement.

A related 2018 Bayesian analysis, Hawking radiation and analogue experiments: A Bayesian analysis, described earlier water-wave reports as claims of classical thermal aspects. That historical assessment should not be treated as a definitive 2026 verdict on every later experiment.

Optical fibres: frequency conversion and stimulated photons

In an optical-fibre analogue, an intense pulse travels through the fibre and changes the optical properties experienced by a weaker signal. The pulse acts as a moving refractive-index structure. A suitable signal can therefore encounter an effective horizon, where its propagation relative to the moving structure is blocked or converted.

Detectors analyse the outgoing light with spectroscopy and photon-counting methods. A frequency-shifted component, a partner mode and the phase relationship between modes are the relevant observables. Because optical frequencies are measured directly, mode conversion can be mapped with high spectral resolution, but the interpretation still depends on the fibre’s dispersion and on separating the weak analogue signal from effects caused by the intense pulse.

Nature Communications reported Measurement of analogue Hawking radiation stimulated by a single photon in 2026. In that experiment, a heralded signal photon meets the moving pulse and is converted into an analogue Hawking photon. The supplied photon is intentional: this is stimulated emission. It demonstrates a controlled analogue process, but it must not be described as conclusive detection of spontaneous Hawking radiation.

Polariton fluids and proposed spin horizons

Polariton fluids provide another platform in which collective excitations can experience a moving effective horizon. They are included among the principal systems reviewed in 2024. The measured quantities depend on the optical readout of the polariton field and its fluctuations.

A 2025 theoretical study by Anna Berti and colleagues, Analog Hawking radiation from a spin-sonic horizon in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, proposes stimulated and spontaneous emission from spin modes in a two-component condensate. It highlights access to spin-excitation quadratures as a possible experimental advantage. Because the work is theoretical, it is a proposal for how detection could be performed, not a report that the proposed signal has already been measured.

How to classify the evidence

Mode conversion

Finding an outgoing negative-frequency or negative-norm partner is evidence for the horizon-scattering mechanism. The result is strongest when the measured conversion follows the predicted dispersion relation and disappears or changes as the horizon is removed.

Cross-horizon correlations

Correlations linking excitations on opposite sides of a BEC sonic horizon are a central signature. Their position, orientation and frequency dependence can be compared with the correlation function calculated for a Hawking-like process.

Entanglement

Entanglement is a stronger quantum claim than a classical correlation. Some BEC experiments report entanglement across the analogue horizon. Establishing it requires an analysis that rules out explanations based on shared classical noise and accounts for detector and state-preparation limitations.

Thermal spectrum and analogue temperature

A Hawking calculation predicts a thermal distribution under specified conditions. Some BEC studies report a thermal spectrum and an associated analogue temperature. The temperature belongs to that particular condensate configuration and measurement; it is not a temperature measured from a cosmic black hole and should not be generalized to every analogue platform.

Stimulated versus spontaneous emission

Stimulated experiments deliberately inject a wave or photon and measure the response. They can reveal the conversion law and partner modes with a larger signal than would occur spontaneously. Spontaneous emission is the fluctuation-driven process sought without an intentionally supplied probe. The two are related, but they answer different experimental questions. The 2026 optical-fibre report is stimulated, so its result cannot be used as shorthand for a spontaneous detection.

Why the wording of a claim matters

“Hawking radiation detected” can conceal several different statements. A water experiment may have measured classical scattering with a thermal-looking feature. A BEC study may have measured cross-horizon correlations and reported entanglement. An optical-fibre experiment may have measured stimulated conversion of a single photon. These are not interchangeable observations.

The 2018 Bayesian analysis concluded, at that time, that an uncontested and repeated demonstration of the full analogue Hawking phenomenon remained outstanding. Later BEC reports and the 2026 optical-fibre result add important signatures, but the available publications do not establish a universally accepted current consensus that all platforms have demonstrated the same phenomenon in the same sense. A careful account therefore names the platform, observable, emission type and interpretation rather than assigning one blanket status to the field.

A checklist for evaluating a new analogue-Hawking result

  • Platform: Is the experiment using a BEC, water flow, polariton fluid, optical fibre or another medium?
  • Horizon: What moving boundary prevents or redirects wave propagation, and how was it calibrated?
  • Observable: Are the authors measuring density correlations, mode conversion, frequency shifts, entanglement or a spectrum?
  • Emission type: Was a probe, laser pulse or photon intentionally supplied?
  • Quantum content: Does the result involve quantum correlations or only classical waves?
  • Thermal claim: Was a thermal spectrum or temperature measured, and under what specific conditions?
  • Controls: Were technical noise, ordinary scattering and finite-temperature backgrounds tested?
  • Reproducibility: Is there independent replication, and do later reviews agree with the authors’ interpretation?

What these experiments do—and do not—tell us

Laboratory analogues let scientists test pieces of horizon physics in systems that can be prepared, imaged and varied. They make mode mixing, dispersion, correlations and stimulated conversion experimentally accessible. They also expose where a prediction depends on the medium’s microscopic physics rather than on a universal low-energy approximation.

They do not provide a direct detection of Hawking radiation emitted by a real astrophysical black hole. The laboratory signal is a property of the chosen medium and its effective horizon. Its scientific value comes from the controlled test of the underlying wave and quantum-field mechanisms, not from creating a miniature cosmic black hole.
