They detect it by measuring what its gravity does to nearby stars and gas, observing radiation from matter heated as it falls inward, and—when possible—imaging the immediate environment at horizon scale. In the Milky Way, decades of stellar-orbit measurements show that an unseen object of roughly four million solar masses is packed into a very small region at the center.
No single observation is necessary in every galaxy. Stellar motions, gas spectra, changing brightness, and radio images provide different—and complementary—ways to test whether a central massive object is a black hole rather than a cluster of ordinary stars or another compact configuration.

What astronomers actually detect
An event horizon emits no light that a telescope can collect. The observational target is therefore the black hole’s surroundings. Gravity controls the paths of stars and gas; infalling material can become extremely hot and luminous; and the region immediately outside the horizon can produce a characteristic radio pattern. Astronomers measure those signals, fit physical models to them, and ask whether the mass is both enormous and concentrated enough to require a black hole.

An orbit can determine how much mass is present. A spectrum can reveal how quickly gas is moving and how hot it is. Variability can probe the size of an active nucleus, while horizon-scale radio imaging shows structure in the black hole’s immediate environment. Method 1: tracing stars around an invisible mass
Repeated images turn motion into evidence
Astronomers repeatedly photograph the crowded central region of a galaxy and measure each identifiable star’s position. Over years, a star’s changing position traces an orbit or part of one. The faster the star moves and the tighter its path, the more mass must be concentrated near the center. By comparing the measured path with gravitational models, researchers estimate the central mass and the size of the region containing it.
This is a dynamical measurement: the mass is inferred from motion, not from the brightness of the object. It is especially powerful when the orbiting stars pass very close to the center, because their velocities and accelerations then respond to the most compact part of the gravitational field.
Why the Milky Way is the clearest case
Dust obscures visible light toward the Milky Way’s center, and thousands of stars overlap in a tiny patch of sky. Adaptive-optics systems on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) correct for atmospheric blurring, allowing astronomers to resolve and follow individual stars. The European Southern Observatory describes a 26-year observing campaign in which these paths demonstrated the immense gravitational pull of a supermassive black hole at the center.

The date marks a specific confirmation within the long campaign, not the beginning or end of the search.
What an orbit can and cannot prove by itself
An orbit establishes the amount of gravitating mass and constrains how tightly it is packed. A diffuse cluster of normal stars would occupy a much larger volume and would affect the orbit differently. As more stars and more years of data are added, the range of allowed alternatives shrinks. The conclusion is therefore based on a compact mass measured through dynamics, not on a visual glimpse of the event horizon.

Method 2: reading the light from hot accreting gas
Accretion turns gravity into radiation
Gas falling toward a black hole does not usually drop straight in. It can form a rotating accretion disk in which friction and compression heat the gas to very high temperatures. The disk and its surrounding plasma can radiate across many wavelengths, including X-rays. A telescope detects that radiation even though it cannot see through the event horizon.
Spectroscopy spreads the light into its component wavelengths. The positions, widths, and shapes of spectral lines reveal the gas’s temperature, density, chemical state, and speed along the line of sight. NASA explains that spectra help distinguish hot, rapidly moving accretion-related gas from cooler, slower gas more commonly associated with star formation.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing gas motion to estimate a central mass
If gas forms an organized disk, its rotation provides another dynamical probe. The measured speed at different distances from the nucleus can be compared with the gravity expected from stars, gas, and a compact central object. Hubble observations of gas speeds in galactic nuclei have been used to estimate the mass of a central compact object, particularly when individual stars cannot be separated.
Gas is not always a clean tracer. Jets, turbulence, magnetic fields, pressure, and outflows can disturb a disk, so astronomers model those effects and compare gas-based results with other evidence. A bright nucleus alone is not sufficient: the spectrum and kinematics must be consistent with rapidly moving material in a deep gravitational potential.
Method 3: measuring reverberation in active galactic nuclei
A delayed response provides a size scale
Some galaxies contain an active galactic nucleus (AGN), where the central accretion region is unusually luminous. The central continuum light can vary. Gas clouds farther out respond after a delay because light takes time to reach them and their emission takes time to return to the observer. Astronomers compare the changing central light with the later changes in emission lines, a technique NASA calls reverberation mapping.

The delay estimates the distance to the responding gas. Combining that size with the gas’s measured velocity gives an estimate of the central mass. This method is valuable for active or distant galaxies in which individual stellar orbits cannot be resolved.
Why reverberation is indirect
Reverberation mapping relies on assumptions about the geometry and motion of the emitting gas. It does not produce a resolved picture of the event horizon, and the inferred mass carries model-dependent uncertainty. Its strength is that it opens a route to weighing central objects in systems far beyond the Milky Way, where direct star tracking is impractical.
Method 4: imaging the black hole’s immediate surroundings
What horizon-scale radio imaging shows
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) combines radio observatories to achieve an angular resolution far beyond that of a single conventional dish. Its image of Sagittarius A* concerns the glowing, orbiting material and the surrounding emission structure on the scale of the black hole’s immediate environment. It is not a photograph of light escaping from inside the event horizon.
ESO describes the Sagittarius A* result as visual evidence that complements decades of stellar-orbit measurements. The gas around the Milky Way’s central object changes rapidly, making observations and the reconstruction of a stable image particularly challenging. The final image is produced from coordinated measurements and physical modeling rather than from a simple snapshot taken by one telescope.
Why the image is complementary
An image can reveal a ring-like emission structure and a central dim region consistent with the way light is expected to behave near a black hole. It does not replace orbital dynamics: the star measurements determine the central mass over long timescales, while the radio image probes the immediate surroundings on horizon scales. Agreement between the two strengthens the overall interpretation.

How the evidence fits together
| Method | What is observed | What is inferred | Works best when | Type of evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stellar-orbit tracking | Positions, velocities, and accelerations of individual stars | Central mass and how compact it is | The galaxy is close enough for stars near the nucleus to be resolved | Inference from motion |
| Gas spectroscopy | Emission lines, temperatures, and gas velocities | Mass and physical conditions in the nuclear region | A bright, organized gas disk or other measurable nuclear gas is present | Inference from light and motion |
| Reverberation mapping | Variations in central light and delayed line emission | Size of the emitting region and an estimated central mass | The galaxy has a variable active nucleus and sufficiently strong emission lines | Indirect inference from timing and motion |
| Horizon-scale radio imaging | Radio structure from the immediate environment | Geometry and appearance of emission near the black hole | The target is bright and compact enough for a global radio array | Image of the surroundings, not the interior |
These methods are not interchangeable. A quiet galaxy may have no bright accretion disk or useful reverberation signal, yet still reveal its central black hole through stellar motions. An active galaxy may be too distant for individual-star tracking but suitable for spectroscopy and reverberation. Astronomers choose the combination that the target’s distance, brightness, dust, and activity make feasible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a central black hole is the preferred explanation
Mass must be concentrated
The key question is not merely whether a galaxy contains a lot of mass. Galaxies obviously do. The decisive issue is whether the measured mass is confined to a sufficiently small volume. Stellar orbits and gas velocities provide that constraint. If the required density is too high for a stable cluster of ordinary stars, a black hole becomes the physically viable explanation.
Independent signals should agree
A convincing identification follows the same logic used elsewhere in astronomy: different observations test the same underlying model. In the Milky Way, long-term stellar tracking measures the gravitational field; the 2018 relativistic effect tests the predicted behavior in the strong-field region; accretion-related radiation shows that energetic gas surrounds the object; and EHT imaging probes the immediate environment. Each line has limitations, but their agreement is more informative than any one image or spectrum.
The Milky Way’s measured scale
NASA Science describes Sagittarius A* as having about four million times the Sun’s mass. That figure is an approximate value attributed to NASA’s page; the page’s publication year is not stated. Estimates can vary with the data and analysis, so the number should be read as a source-specific scale rather than an immutable exact count.
Why detecting black holes in other galaxies is harder
At larger distances, the angular separation between a galaxy’s central stars is too small for current telescopes to resolve individually. Dust can hide the nucleus, and a galaxy may not have a luminous accretion disk. The observing strategy therefore changes.
Best Value
- Nearby, relatively quiet nuclei: measure the motions of stars or circumnuclear gas if the region can be resolved.
- Active nuclei: use spectra to characterize fast gas and, when monitoring is possible, apply reverberation mapping.
- Very compact, bright radio sources: use coordinated radio observations to study horizon-scale surroundings.
- Obscured systems: observe at wavelengths that penetrate dust more effectively and combine whatever dynamical or spectral information is available.
Not every galaxy supplies every kind of evidence. A catalog of black-hole candidates can therefore contain objects supported by different measurement combinations and different levels of directness.
Common misconceptions and how to avoid them
“Invisible” does not mean undetectable
Invisible means the event horizon itself does not send out observable light. The gravitational field and the radiation from nearby matter are observable. In practice, astronomers detect a black hole through those effects in the same way that an unseen planet can be inferred from a star’s motion.
“The telescope photographed the black hole”
The EHT image shows emission from the immediate surroundings. It does not show the inside of the event horizon, and it is not a conventional optical photograph. Calling it an image of the environment keeps the claim precise without diminishing its importance.

“A bright center proves a black hole”
Brightness alone is ambiguous. Star formation, supernova remnants, jets, and other energetic processes can also produce strong emission. The spectrum, variability, gas speed, and compactness must be consistent with accretion onto a massive central object.
“One orbit gives an exact mass”
An individual orbit constrains the gravitational field but can leave degeneracies involving distance, orbital orientation, and distributed mass. Repeated observations, multiple stars, improved resolution, and relativistic corrections reduce those uncertainties.
What a typical observing campaign looks like
- Choose the tracer: determine whether the nucleus offers resolvable stars, measurable gas, variable emission, or compact radio structure.
- Collect time-series data: return to the target often enough to measure stellar motion, gas variability, or changes in the active nucleus.
- Calibrate and model: correct for atmospheric distortion, instrument response, dust, and background emission before fitting physical models.
- Infer the mass and scale: use orbital dynamics, gas kinematics, or reverberation timing to estimate how much mass is present and how tightly it is confined.
- Test alternatives: ask whether stars, gas, or another compact configuration could remain stable at the required density and reproduce all observations.
- Seek independent confirmation: compare dynamical results with spectra, variability, relativistic effects, or horizon-scale radio structure when those data are available.
The result is a measured chain of cause and effect: a compact central mass shapes nearby motion and, if fuel is present, powers the light from its surroundings.
The bottom line
Scientists detect a black hole at a galaxy’s center by observing its consequences. Stellar orbits weigh the unseen object and show how compact it is; spectra and gas motion reveal hot, rapidly moving accretion material; reverberation mapping extends mass estimates to active and distant galaxies; and horizon-scale radio imaging examines the environment immediately outside the event horizon. For the Milky Way, a 26-year VLT campaign, its 2018 relativistic confirmation, and complementary observations together make the central black hole interpretation compelling.
