Researchers control experimental medical microrobots by combining a robot that responds to an external stimulus, equipment that delivers that stimulus, a method for locating the robot, and software or human commands that adjust its motion. Magnetic fields are the leading approach: magnetic material embedded in a tiny robot can be pulled, rotated, or otherwise driven by permanent magnets or electromagnets outside the body. Imaging then supplies the position information needed for manual or automated correction.
This is a laboratory technology, not a routine medical service. Published systems have been demonstrated in laboratory settings, anatomical models, and some animal experiments, but a 2023 review says magnetic microrobots were not qualified for actual clinical application. A 2025 sperm-cell demonstration used a 3D-printed reproductive-tract model rather than a living organism.

What “control” means for a medical microrobot
Inside the body, a microrobot cannot normally carry a conventional motor, battery, radio, and cooling system at a useful scale. Instead, the control system is distributed across four parts:
- The robot: its shape and materials determine how it responds and whether it can carry a drug, scaffold, or other payload.
- The actuation hardware: magnets, acoustic transducers, light sources, chemical gradients, or combinations of these create the force or torque that moves the robot.
- The tracking system: ultrasound, magnetic or radio-frequency localization, MRI, X-ray, fluorescence, or another imaging method estimates where the robot is.
- The controller: a person or algorithm converts a desired path and the measured position into the next command.
The central challenge is that movement and observation are coupled. A field may move the robot, but the operator still needs to know whether it reached the intended vessel, cavity, tissue region, or model feature. The 2024 review “Medical Microrobots” describes the broader goal as building miniature robots that can be controlled inside the body to help identify and treat disease.

How magnetic steering moves the robot
Magnetic systems place magnetic particles, a permanent magnetic element, or a magnetic coating in the robot. An externally generated field can exert a force that pulls the robot toward a field gradient, or a torque that aligns it with the field. By changing the field’s direction, strength, or timing, researchers can make a robot translate, rotate, swim, roll, or follow a programmed path. Because the energy source is outside the body, the robot can operate without an onboard motor, battery, or tether.
Two hardware families dominate experimental setups. Their trade-offs are different rather than one being universally superior.
| Actuation system | How it is controlled | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permanent magnets | Mechanical movement or repositioning of magnets changes the field experienced by the robot. | Large working areas are possible, and the mechanism can be comparatively straightforward. | The field is difficult to switch off quickly; precision and the number of independently controlled motion directions can be limited. |
| Electromagnetic coils | Computer-controlled currents vary field strength, direction, and waveforms. | Changing fields and more degrees of freedom support complex trajectories and finer steering strategies. | The coils occupy a fixed workspace and can heat during prolonged operation, requiring thermal management. |
These distinctions are summarized in the 2023 review “System integration of magnetic medical microrobots: from design to control.” A system designed to reach a broad region may favor a permanent-magnet arrangement, while a procedure demanding independently adjustable forces and torques may justify a coil array. The final choice depends on the target anatomy, required motion, available workspace, exposure limits, and how much control authority the experiment needs.

Actuation hardware cannot compensate for a poor robot design. Researchers match geometry and materials to the fluid, tissue, target and payload. Magnetic microrobots described in the literature include helical swimmers, spheres and porous microscaffolds.
Helical robots
A magnetic helix can convert a rotating field into corkscrew-like propulsion. Its geometry may also provide space for a cargo or therapeutic coating. The same structure that improves swimming, however, can make fabrication, loading and predictable behavior more demanding.

Spherical robots
Spheres can be relatively simple to manufacture and can be made very small. They may be useful when rolling, pulling or transporting a surface-bound payload is more important than long-distance swimming. Their shape offers fewer built-in propulsion features, so field design and the surrounding fluid become especially important.
Porous scaffolds
Porous magnetic scaffolds can combine locomotion with tissue-support or cargo functions. Their pore structure, magnetic content and degradation behavior must be balanced: adding more magnetic material may improve actuation while changing mass, stiffness, biocompatibility or the way the structure breaks down.

A robot that is useful for a short laboratory demonstration may not be suitable for prolonged contact with tissue or for safe clearance from the body.
How researchers see a robot they cannot directly observe
A camera outside the body cannot simply look through tissue and provide a reliable robot position. Researchers therefore select a tracking method that can reach the target region and that fits the experiment’s safety and timing requirements.
| Tracking method | What it can provide | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ultrasound | Useful position information with potential for real-time guidance, especially in shallower regions. | Penetration and image quality are limited by the tissue path and target depth. |
| Fluorescence | Optical visibility for accessible or relatively shallow tissue and laboratory setups. | Light scattering and absorption restrict useful depth. |
| MRI | Deep-tissue imaging and anatomical context. | The scanner environment, imaging rate and system integration can constrain the actuation setup. |
| X-ray | Visualization of deep targets and high-contrast tracking in some demonstrations. | Ionizing radiation makes prolonged tracking undesirable. |
| Magnetic or radio-frequency positioning | Estimates robot location from signals associated with the device. | A position estimate may not by itself establish the robot’s exact relationship to nearby anatomy. |
The method determines what “feedback” means. A tracker that updates rapidly but provides little anatomical context is useful for one control problem; an anatomical image that updates slowly may be better for planning a safe route. The integration review discusses these trade-offs and emphasizes that localization and actuation must be designed as one system.

Open-loop, closed-loop and autonomous control
Open-loop steering
In open-loop control, an operator sends a command—such as moving a magnet along a planned route—without continuously correcting it from measured robot position. This approach is simple and can work when the path, fluid conditions and robot response are highly predictable. Small errors can accumulate, though, because the command is not automatically corrected when the robot drifts, stalls or encounters an obstacle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesClosed-loop steering
Closed-loop control adds a repeated observe-and-correct cycle. The controller compares the robot’s measured position with a target, calculates an error, and updates the field command. Researchers have applied conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control as well as model-predictive control, which uses a model to evaluate likely future motion before selecting the next input.
- Set a target: define a point, path or orientation in the imaging coordinate system.
- Measure: acquire an ultrasound, MRI, X-ray, fluorescence, magnetic or radio-frequency observation.
- Estimate: identify the robot and transform its observed location into the coordinate frame used by the actuator.
- Calculate error: determine the difference between the desired and observed position or orientation.
- Command: adjust magnet position, coil currents, waveform, frequency or another actuator input.
- Check safety: limit field, speed, temperature, radiation exposure and proximity to anatomical boundaries.
- Repeat: continue the cycle until the robot reaches the target, a stop condition occurs or the operator takes over.
Closed-loop control can reduce accumulated navigation error, but it depends on reliable tracking, a usable robot model and a safe response when the image is ambiguous or temporarily lost.
Autonomous control
An autonomous system plans or adapts a route with less direct operator input. It may select field commands from a motion model, update a path around obstacles or manage a swarm. Autonomy does not remove the need for supervision: uncertain localization, changing biological conditions and failures in the robot or imaging chain remain safety concerns. The 2023 magnetic-system review favors human involvement as an additional safeguard.
Magnetic control is one option among several
A 2022 review categorizes biomedical microrobots as magnetically, acoustically, chemically or optically driven, with hybrid systems combining more than one mechanism. The appropriate method depends on how deeply energy can reach, how much force and torque are available, how many motion directions are needed, what tracking is compatible, and how the surrounding biological environment affects propulsion.

| Approach | Potential advantage | Key dependency or concern |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic | Wireless force and torque with no onboard power source; field direction and strength can be varied. | Requires magnetic material and external magnets or coils; coil heating and workspace constraints may matter. |
| Acoustic | Uses sound fields that can interact with small devices or particles. | Performance depends on acoustic coupling, tissue path and the available maneuverability. |
| Chemical | Can use reactions in the surrounding environment for propulsion. | Requires compatible fuel or chemistry and control over what enters or changes in the biological environment. |
| Optical | Light can drive or manipulate specially designed microstructures. | Penetration and line-of-sight limits are important in tissue. |
| Hybrid | Combines mechanisms to exploit complementary capabilities. | More components can increase integration complexity and compatibility requirements. |
The review “Recent Process in Microrobots: From Propulsion to Swarming for Biomedical Applications” presents these categories without identifying a universal best choice. A deep target, a shallow optical target, a drug-delivery task and a swarm experiment can lead to different engineering decisions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a controlled experiment typically involves
Although setups differ, a demonstration generally follows a sequence that exposes the interaction between robot, actuator and tracker.
- Define the medical task: specify whether the device must transport cargo, reach a location, orient a scaffold, release material or perform another action.
- Select the robot architecture: choose a helix, sphere, scaffold or other structure, then determine magnetic content, payload and degradation behavior.
- Calibrate the actuator: map magnet positions or coil currents to the field and force/torque experienced in the intended workspace.
- Calibrate localization: relate image coordinates to the actuator’s coordinate frame and determine how accurately the robot can be identified.
- Plan a route: account for fluid flow, tissue geometry, obstacles, speed limits and the possibility of losing visibility.
- Run with supervision: apply open-loop, closed-loop or autonomous commands while monitoring the robot, anatomy, equipment and safety limits.
- Stop and recover: define how to halt fields, withdraw or immobilize the robot, and handle a lost-track or hardware fault before testing begins.
This systems approach explains why a successful motion video is not, by itself, evidence of a clinical device. It may demonstrate actuation while leaving biocompatibility, sterilization, long-term tracking, retrieval and human-safety questions unresolved.
What the 2025 “sperm bot” demonstration shows—and does not show
A report published by Live Science on September 5, 2025 described sperm cells coated with magnetic nanoparticles. Researchers guided them with an external magnetic field through a 3D-printed model representing part of the female reproductive tract and tracked them with X-rays. The report is available at this article.

That demonstration is a clear example of the basic control loop: magnetic actuation supplies steering, X-ray imaging supplies location information, and the model supplies a controlled environment. It was not performed inside a real organism, so it should not be described as a human treatment, a clinical trial or proof that such devices can safely navigate a person’s reproductive tract.

How close are microrobots to routine use in people?
The clinical boundary is as important as the steering technique. The 2023 review reports in-vitro tests and some animal work, while stating that magnetic microrobots were not qualified for actual clinical application. It identifies biocompatibility and biodegradability as continuing development requirements. Those requirements include more than proving that a robot can move: researchers must understand tissue interaction, immune response, toxicity, degradation products, retention, retrieval, sterilization and failure behavior.
Evidence should therefore be labeled by stage:
- Laboratory test: motion or payload behavior is shown under controlled conditions.
- Anatomical model: a phantom or 3D-printed structure reproduces selected geometry without being a living body.
- Animal study: the device is tested in a living organism, but results do not automatically translate to humans.
- Human clinical evaluation: safety and performance are assessed under an approved clinical protocol.
- Routine clinical use: a qualified device is available within normal medical practice.
The cited examples support the first three categories in particular cases, not routine deployment in people.
How to judge a microrobot-control claim
When reading a new demonstration, ask seven questions:
- How deeply did the actuation energy or field reach the target?
- What force, torque, speed and motion directions were actually demonstrated?
- How large was the usable workspace, and how many degrees of freedom were controlled?
- Was tracking real-time, and did it locate the robot relative to anatomy or only in an instrument coordinate system?
- What tissue exposure, heating or radiation concerns applied?
- Were the robot’s materials compatible with the intended cargo, degradation and biological environment?
- Was the evidence from a bench setup, model, animal or human clinical evaluation?
These questions prevent a common category error: treating the ability to steer a tiny object in a model as equivalent to a safe, approved medical procedure.
