On an iPhone 15, open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts and tap the account that is failing. In most cases, you change the mailbox password on the email provider’s website or app, then return to Mail and complete its sign-in prompt. If Mail still cannot authenticate, remove the account from the iPhone and add it again.
Change the password Mail uses
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Mail Accounts and select the affected account.
- If a provider sign-in or reauthentication screen appears, enter the current password and complete any security checks, including two-factor authentication.
- If no prompt appears, open the provider’s official website or app and change or reset the mailbox password there.
- Return to Mail and allow it to sign in with the new credentials.
The iPhone 15 model does not create a separate email-password system. The exact labels and authentication screens depend mainly on your iOS version and provider.
Where to change the actual mailbox password
Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Microsoft Exchange and custom-domain services normally manage passwords on their own websites or apps. The Mail settings screen connects the account to your iPhone; it is not generally the place where the provider account password is changed.
| Account situation | Where to change or restore access | What Mail may require afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail or another Google account | Google’s account or Gmail sign-in flow | OAuth approval, two-factor authentication or a new sign-in |
| Outlook.com, Microsoft 365 or Exchange | Microsoft’s account page or your organization’s sign-in page | Microsoft authentication, two-factor authentication or administrator approval |
| Yahoo Mail | Yahoo’s account-security page or app | A fresh sign-in and any Yahoo security verification |
| Custom-domain mailbox | The host’s webmail or account portal | Provider-specific password, server or security requirements |
| iCloud Mail | Your Apple Account security settings | Apple Account authentication on the device |
Do not confuse an email password with your Apple Account password
An email-provider password is separate from the password for the Apple Account used for iCloud, App Store purchases and other Apple services.

When Mail keeps saying “incorrect password”
Reauthenticate the existing account
Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts, tap the account and follow any sign-in prompt. Approve the provider’s security checks rather than repeatedly typing the old password.

Remove and add the account again
- Go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Tap the affected account.
- Choose Sign Out or Delete Account, depending on the account type and iOS wording.
- Return to Mail Accounts, tap Add Account, choose the provider and complete its sign-in flow.
Removing an account from the iPhone removes its connection from Mail and other apps using that account; it does not close or cancel the mailbox with the provider. Before removing a work account or one containing local drafts, check that important drafts and unsent messages are saved elsewhere, because device-only settings or unsynced data may not return automatically.

- Tap the entry, then choose Edit > Change Password.

Why the screens differ by account
- OAuth sign-in: Google, Microsoft and other providers may show a web-based approval page instead of a password field in Mail.
- Two-factor authentication: A code, approval notification or security key may be required after the new password is entered.
- App passwords: Some services or older mail clients require a provider-generated app password rather than the normal account password.
- Work or school policies: Exchange and Microsoft 365 administrators can require managed sign-in, device compliance or a specific server configuration.
- Personal versus managed accounts: A personal mailbox is controlled by you; an administrator-managed account may need help from your organization’s administrator.
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Approach | Best when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Provider sign-in prompt | Mail displays a reauthentication request after the password changed | Usually preserves the existing account setup; screens depend on the provider |
| Change the password on the provider site or app | You know the old password is no longer accepted or no prompt appears | Requires the provider’s security checks and may invalidate other sessions |
| Use an app password | Your provider or administrator specifically requires one | It is separate from the normal mailbox password and must be generated by the provider |
| Remove and re-add the account | Mail remains unable to authenticate after the password change | Review unsynced drafts and recheck account settings after setup |
Quick checks before contacting support
- Confirm that the new password works on the provider’s official website or app.
- Check whether the account requires two-factor authentication or an app password.
- Complete any sign-in prompt under Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- For a work or school mailbox, ask the administrator whether a policy, server change or account lock is blocking access.
- If the account was removed, add it again through Mail Accounts > Add Account rather than entering random incoming and outgoing server values.
