Open a JPEG by double-clicking or tapping the .jpg or .jpeg file. Windows normally uses Photos, macOS uses Preview, and phones use Photos, Gallery or Google Photos. If the wrong program opens, use Open with to select another installed viewer. If the file still will not open, check whether it is really a JPEG, download or copy it again, and convert it only when the underlying file is HEIF/HEIC or another format.
What a JPEG file is and what normally opens it
JPEG is the Joint Photographic Experts Group image format. The two familiar filename endings are .jpg and .jpeg; Windows also recognizes .jpe. The JPEG MIME type is image/jpeg. These endings identify the same general image format, so changing .jpg to .jpeg does not change the picture.

Current desktop and mobile operating systems include software that can display an ordinary JPEG. You generally do not need to install an extra application just to view one. An image editor is useful only when you need to crop, retouch, resize or export the picture.

Open a JPEG on Windows
Use the normal double-click
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer, or open it from the taskbar.
- Browse to the folder containing the image. Common locations include Downloads, Pictures, Desktop and a folder on a USB drive or network location.
- Confirm that the filename ends in
.jpg,.jpegor.jpe. If extensions are hidden, turn on View > Show > File name extensions in current Windows versions so that you can see the real ending. - Double-click the file. Windows normally opens it in Photos, where you can view it and use the available rotate, crop or other editing controls.
A JPEG can also open from a browser or Paint if those programs are installed. Opening it in a browser is convenient for viewing; it does not change the original file.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Choose another app for one opening
- In File Explorer, right-click the JPEG.
- Select Open with.
- Choose Photos, Paint, a browser or another installed image program.
- If Windows shows a confirmation or access prompt, allow the app only if you recognize the file and intended to open it.
This is the quickest fix when a different program has become the default or when the current viewer reports an error. The alternative program must already be installed; Open with does not download an application.
Change the default JPEG association
- Right-click any
.jpgor.jpegfile and choose Open with > Choose another app. - Select the viewer you want to use.
- Enable the option to always use that app for this type of file, when Windows displays it.
- Open another JPEG to verify that the association changed.
You can repeat the process for a different extension if .jpg and .jpeg behave differently. A default-app change affects how Windows launches the file; it does not repair a damaged image or convert another format into JPEG.
Open a JPEG on a Mac
View it in Preview
- Open Finder and navigate to the folder containing the image.
- Double-click the
.jpgor.jpegfile. - macOS normally opens it in Preview. Use the window controls to zoom or inspect the image, and use Preview’s save or export commands only when you intend to create a changed copy.
JPEGs stored on local disks, removable media or network storage can be opened this way as long as the file is available to the Mac. If an editor is installed, it can open the same standard JPEG for more advanced changes.

Use Open With when Preview is not the right choice
- In Finder, Control-click or right-click the image.
- Choose Open With.
- Select Preview or another installed viewer or editor.
Choosing an app from this menu changes only that opening unless you separately change the default application for the extension. If every viewer fails, treat the issue as a file or transfer problem rather than simply an association problem.
Open a JPEG on an iPhone or iPad
Open an existing JPEG
- Open Photos if the image is in your camera library or has been saved there.
- If the file is in a download, attachment or cloud folder, open Files and browse to its location.
- Tap the image. iOS or iPadOS displays a supported JPEG in the built-in viewer.
When an image is in Files rather than Photos, you can use the share controls to copy or save it to Photos if you want it in the camera library. The exact destinations shown depend on the apps installed on the device.
Tell JPEG apart from HEIF or HEIC
Recent Apple devices may capture HEIF/HEIC rather than JPEG. HEIF/HEVC support begins with iOS 11 and iPadOS, and with macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later. A file that looks like a photograph but ends in .heic or .heif is a different format; renaming it to .jpg does not convert the encoded data.

Export an HEIF/HEIC image as JPEG
- Open the HEIF/HEIC image in Photos or Preview on an Apple device that supports it.
- Use the app’s Export or equivalent save command.
- Choose JPEG as the output format and save a new file.
- Open the exported
.jpgin Photos, Files or another viewer to check it.
On a Mac, Apple documents the route as File > Export from a compatible app. Export creates a JPEG copy; it leaves the original HEIF/HEIC file unchanged. For future iPhone or iPad captures, go to Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible where that option is available. New captures then use JPEG rather than HEIF, while existing images are not converted automatically.

Open a JPEG on Android
Find it in a gallery app
- Open Gallery or Google Photos and look through the relevant album or date.
- Tap the image to view it.
- If you downloaded it or received it as an attachment, check the Downloads album or open the device’s Files/file-manager app.
Android menus differ by manufacturer and software version. A file manager is often the most reliable way to locate a JPEG when it is not visible in the camera gallery.
Select an app when Android asks
When more than one compatible viewer is installed, Android may ask which app should open the file. Select a gallery or image viewer you recognize. Choose the default or “always” option only if you want that app to handle future JPEGs; otherwise choose the one-time option when offered. You can use the file manager’s Open with action again if you later want a different viewer.

Why a JPEG will not open
The extension does not match the actual format
A filename ending in .jpg is not proof that the bytes inside are JPEG data. Microsoft notes that changing a filename extension does not convert a file. An image named photo.jpg may actually be HEIC/HEIF, WebP or another format, or it may be damaged. Check the extension supplied by the person or service that created the file and, when possible, open the original in the app that exported it.
The download or copy is incomplete
Compare the file with the source if you can. An unusually small file, a transfer that stopped, or a corruption message points to an incomplete copy. Delete the bad copy and download it again, copy it again from the camera, USB drive or network location, or ask the sender to export and send a fresh JPEG. Do not overwrite the only original while testing repairs.
The default viewer is broken or unsuitable
Try the platform’s Open with route and select another installed viewer. If one app opens the image while another fails, the file is probably readable and the problem is limited to the first app or its association. If no installed viewer can open it, continue checking the format and the transfer rather than repeatedly changing defaults.

The file came from another operating system
File-format identification can fail when files are transferred between macOS and Windows. Keep the original extension, avoid renaming files merely to make them look familiar, and test the image in a second viewer. If the source is HEIF/HEIC, use a compatible app to export a real JPEG.
Conversion: what works and what does not
- Renaming: Changing
picture.heictopicture.jpgchanges only the label. It does not convert the encoded image and will not make an incompatible viewer understand it. - Exporting: Open the source in Photos, Preview or another compatible app and use its export or save-as command to create a JPEG or PNG copy.
- Choosing an output: Use JPEG when broad photo compatibility is the goal. Use PNG when the application specifically requires it or when you need that format’s characteristics; conversion can create a separate copy rather than replacing the source.
- Checking the result: Confirm that the new filename ends in
.jpgor.jpeg, then open it on the device where you need to use it.
Conversion is necessary only when the original is a different format or a particular application cannot read the source. An ordinary, intact JPEG does not need conversion before viewing.
A practical decision path
- Try the normal viewer. Double-click on Windows or Mac, or tap the image in Photos, Gallery, Google Photos or Files on a phone.
- Use Open with. Select another installed viewer if the wrong program launches or the first one reports an error.
- Inspect the real extension. Look for
.jpg,.jpeg,.jpe,.heic,.heifor another ending. - Retry the transfer. Re-download or recopy a file that is incomplete, unusually small or reported as corrupt.
- Export only when needed. Convert HEIF/HEIC or another source format through a compatible app; never treat a rename as conversion.
These steps separate the three common causes: a wrong app association, a format mismatch and a damaged or incomplete file. They also preserve the original so that a failed conversion or edit does not destroy the only copy.
