Set up Sleep in the Health app to create a repeating bedtime and wake-time routine, choose which days it applies to, set a sleep goal, and optionally use a wake alarm. The same schedule can start Sleep Focus, which manages notifications and screen behavior, while an Apple Watch can add sleep data and a Sleep Score.
These are separate controls: Health holds the schedule, Sleep Focus controls interruptions, the Clock app provides independent alarms, and Apple Watch tracking is optional. The steps below follow Apple’s iPhone instructions with iOS 27-era labels; wording can differ by software version or region.

What “Sleep” on iPhone actually includes
Apple’s Sleep tools are easier to use when you separate their purposes:
| Feature | Purpose | Repeats? | Hardware needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health sleep schedule | Stores bedtime, wake time, active days, sleep goal, wind-down, reminders, and an optional schedule alarm. | Yes, on the active days you select. | iPhone only. |
| Sleep Focus | Reduces notifications and changes permitted people, apps, Lock Screen, and Home Screen behavior during sleep. | It can follow the Health schedule, or be turned on manually. | iPhone only. |
| Clock alarm | Sounds an alarm once or on a repeating pattern without automatically activating Sleep Focus. | Yes, according to the Clock alarm’s repeat setting. | iPhone only. |
| Apple Watch sleep tracking | Records sleep data and can calculate Apple’s Sleep Score. | Nightly, when tracking requirements are met. | Optional paired Apple Watch. |
A schedule alarm and a Clock alarm are not interchangeable. A schedule alarm is part of Health’s sleep routine; a Clock alarm is an independent alarm. Apple says a song cannot be selected for a sleep schedule alarm, while a Clock alarm can use a song.

How do I set up Sleep on my iPhone?
Use the recurring schedule flow in Health if you want the routine to repeat. Entering bedtime and wake time while setting up Sleep Focus can establish the next occurrence and repeat only once, so it is not a substitute for creating a full schedule.
Create your first recurring schedule
- Open Health.
- Tap Browse, then Sleep.
- On the Sleep page, tap Get Started and then Continue.
- Choose a Sleep Goal.
- Select the days on which the schedule should be active.
- Set your bedtime and wake time.
- Decide whether to use the schedule’s wake alarm. If you enable it, set its sound, volume, vibration, and snooze options.
- Save the schedule.
The schedule applies only to the days shown as active. For example, selecting Monday through Friday creates a weekday routine; Saturday and Sunday remain outside that schedule unless you add them or create another schedule.
Set a realistic sleep goal
The sleep goal is the target duration used by Health’s Sleep feature. It is separate from the alarm time: changing the goal does not by itself move your wake time, and moving the wake time does not automatically change the goal. Choose a duration that matches the routine you intend to follow, then adjust the schedule times independently when necessary.

Health supports multiple schedules, which is useful when your wake time differs across the week.
- Open Health and go to Browse > Sleep.
- Open Full Schedule & Options.
- Choose the option to add another schedule.
- Set the active days, bedtime, wake time, and alarm options for that schedule.
- Save it, then check that the active-day selections do not overlap unintentionally.
A common arrangement is one schedule for Monday through Friday and a second for Saturday and Sunday. Each schedule can have its own times and alarm settings. If you edit an existing schedule rather than adding one, the change applies to every active day in that schedule.

How do I change my sleep schedule for tonight?
Use the Next section when you need a one-night exception, such as a later bedtime before a day off. A change made there affects the next wake-up only; after that wake-up, the normal schedule resumes.
- Open Health > Browse > Sleep.
- Find the next scheduled sleep period and tap Next.
- Edit the upcoming bedtime or wake time (and any available alarm setting).
- Save the change and verify the displayed next wake-up time.
Do not edit the main schedule when you only want a single-night change. A full schedule edit changes every day assigned to that schedule and will continue until you change it again.

When a temporary change should become permanent
If the same exception will happen regularly, edit the schedule under Full Schedule & Options or create a separate schedule with its own active days. Using Next repeatedly is appropriate for isolated changes, not for a recurring pattern.
What are wind-down, Sleep Reminders, and Sleep Focus timing?
Open Health > Browse > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options to adjust these settings.
Wind-down
Wind-down can begin from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime. When wind-down starts, Sleep Focus starts as well if your schedule is set to use it. Choose the interval that gives you enough time to finish tasks and reduce interruptions before the scheduled bedtime.

The Health schedule defines the bedtime and wake-time windows. Sleep Focus is the notification and device-behavior layer associated with that schedule. Changing one does not automatically rewrite the other’s customization, such as which people or apps are allowed through.
How do I customize Sleep Focus?
After setting up a sleep schedule, open Settings > Focus > Sleep. You can customize:
- People who are allowed to notify you.
- Apps that may send notifications.
- The Lock Screen and Home Screen shown while Sleep Focus is active.
- Other Focus behavior available on your iPhone.
These choices determine what gets through during Sleep Focus; they do not change your bedtime, wake time, or sleep goal.
Turn Sleep Focus on or off manually
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Focus.
- Tap Sleep to turn it on.
- To turn it off, open the same controls and tap Sleep again.
Manual activation is independent of waiting for the next scheduled bedtime. Other Focus modes can also be scheduled in Settings, but that does not mean every Focus mode is linked to the Health sleep schedule.

Keep the schedule but stop automatic Sleep Focus
If you want Health to retain your bedtime and wake-time routine while leaving Sleep Focus off automatically, open Health > Browse > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options and turn off Use Schedule for Sleep Focus. Apple describes the result this way: “When this setting is off, your sleep schedules remain in effect, but your Sleep Focus doesn’t automatically turn on.” You can still turn Sleep Focus on manually from Control Center.
Does Sleep Focus set an alarm?
No. Sleep Focus manages notifications and screen behavior; it is not itself an alarm. An alarm can be configured inside the Health sleep schedule, or you can create a separate alarm in Clock.
| Need | Use | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Wake at the end of a recurring sleep routine | Health sleep schedule alarm | Configured with the schedule; sound, volume, vibration, and snooze are available. A song cannot be selected. |
| Set a one-time wake-up | Clock alarm | Independent of the Health schedule and Sleep Focus. |
| Repeat an alarm on a pattern unrelated to sleep settings | Clock repeating alarm | Can repeat without turning on Sleep Focus; Apple says a song can be used. |
| Silence most notifications and change screens overnight | Sleep Focus | Can follow the Health schedule or be activated manually; it does not replace an alarm. |
This distinction means you can set a Clock alarm for an early appointment without changing your sleep schedule, and you can keep a Health schedule while choosing not to activate Sleep Focus automatically.

An Apple Watch is optional. You do not need one to create a Health schedule, use a schedule alarm, or configure Sleep Focus. The watch adds recorded sleep data when its tracking requirements are met.
Enable tracking during or after setup
If an Apple Watch is already paired, the watch option appears during Sleep setup. You can also enable the tracking path after pairing the watch later. Follow Apple’s Sleep setup prompts to turn on sleep tracking for the watch and confirm that the watch is associated with the iPhone’s Health data.

Meet the overnight requirements
- Turn on Sleep Tracking for the Apple Watch.
- Charge the watch to at least 30 percent before bed.
- Wear it while sleeping for at least one hour to receive sleep data.
The 30-percent and one-hour figures are device-use requirements for obtaining data, not medical thresholds. If a night is missing, check those conditions first, along with whether Sleep Tracking is enabled.
Understand Apple’s Sleep Score
Apple describes Sleep Score as a 0–100 rating based on the previous night. Its stated weighting is:
| Component | Points | What Apple says it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep duration | 50 | How long you slept. |
| Bedtime consistency | 30 | Consistency of when you fell asleep; Apple says this considers the last 13 nights. |
| Interruptions | 20 | Interruptions during sleep. |
The score is Apple’s method for summarizing the previous night. It is not a clinical diagnosis or an independent measurement of health.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your goal | Recommended setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time | Create a recurring Health schedule. | It repeats on selected active days and can include a schedule alarm. |
| Use different weekday and weekend times | Create two Health schedules with separate active days. | Each pattern can have its own times and alarm settings. |
| Change only the next morning’s wake time | Edit Next. | The normal schedule returns after that wake-up. |
| Reduce overnight interruptions | Use Sleep Focus and customize allowed people and apps. | Focus controls notifications and screen behavior. |
| Keep the schedule but avoid automatic Focus | Turn off Use Schedule for Sleep Focus. | Health retains the schedule while Sleep Focus remains manual. |
| Collect sleep data | Add an Apple Watch with Sleep Tracking enabled. | The watch records data when charged and worn long enough. |
| Use a music alarm or an unrelated recurring alarm | Use the Clock app. | Clock alarms are independent and can use a song. |
Troubleshooting common Sleep setup problems
The schedule changed when I wanted only one night
You likely edited the full schedule instead of the upcoming entry. Return to Health > Browse > Sleep and use Next for a one-time adjustment. Edit Full Schedule & Options only when every active day should change.
Sleep Focus does not start at bedtime
Open Health > Browse > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options and check Use Schedule for Sleep Focus. If it is off, the schedule remains active but Sleep Focus will not start automatically. Also check whether you set a wind-down interval: Sleep Focus begins at the start of wind-down, not at the end of it.
Sleep Focus starts, but an important notification is missing
Review Settings > Focus > Sleep and inspect the allowed people and apps. Sleep Focus may be working exactly as configured while excluding a person or app you intended to permit.
The wake alarm has the wrong behavior
Confirm which alarm you are editing. A Health schedule alarm is configured in the schedule and cannot use a song; a Clock alarm is configured in Clock and can use a song. Adjust the schedule alarm’s sound, volume, vibration, or snooze controls in Health, or change the independent Clock alarm instead.

Apple Watch data is missing
Verify that Sleep Tracking is enabled, the watch reached at least 30 percent charge before bed, and it was worn for at least one hour. A schedule can still work normally without the watch, so missing watch data does not mean the iPhone schedule failed.
Quick Recap
A practical setup checklist
- Create the repeating routine in Health > Browse > Sleep > Get Started, not only through the initial Sleep Focus prompt.
- Select the exact active days; add a second schedule when weekday and weekend times differ.
- Use Next for a one-night change and expect the normal schedule to return afterward.
- Set wind-down between 15 minutes and 3 hours if you want Sleep Focus to begin before bedtime.
- Customize permitted people, apps, Lock Screen, and Home Screen under Settings > Focus > Sleep.
- Remember that Sleep Focus is not an alarm, and that Health alarms and Clock alarms have different capabilities.
- Turn off Use Schedule for Sleep Focus if you want the schedule without automatic Focus.
- Add Apple Watch tracking only if you want sleep data; charge it to at least 30 percent and wear it for at least one hour.
