How Do I Know When It’s Time to Say Goodbye to My Pet?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single sign or exact day that can tell you when it is time to say goodbye to a pet. The clearest next step is a conversation with your veterinarian about your pet’s comfort, suffering, likely illness progression and care options. You know your pet’s usual habits; your veterinary team can help interpret what has changed and what may come next.

What changes should prompt a conversation with your veterinarian?

Changes in comfort and everyday function are reasons to ask for an assessment, not a do-it-yourself diagnosis. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) lists difficulty breathing, persistent pain, trouble eating or drinking, difficulty standing or walking, withdrawal and repeated medical crises among signs that a pet may benefit from hospice, palliative care or a quality-of-life assessment. The RSPCA also suggests noticing changes in appetite, mobility, behavior, confusion, restlessness and interest in favorite activities.

Ask your veterinarian to consider pain, eating and drinking, breathing, elimination, mobility, and your pet’s engagement with people and surroundings. Rebecca Ashman, RSPCA Head Vet, suggests asking, “Is my pet still enjoying their life?” It is one useful reflection, not a test with a universal answer.

Timing depends on the animal’s medical condition, the bond with their caregiver, the resources available for home care and access to veterinary care. Jane Sykes, professor of veterinary medicine at UC Davis and a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist, explains that “the timing differs for every owner-animal relationship.”

What care options can you discuss?

Euthanasia is not the only care conversation. Options depend on the diagnosis, the pet’s symptoms and what can realistically keep them comfortable. Ask the veterinarian to explain the likely benefits, burdens and practical demands of each path for your particular animal.

Treatment, hospice or palliative care

Treatment may still be appropriate, while hospice or palliative care focuses on comfort and support through the final stage of life. Ask what symptoms can be relieved, how the illness is likely to progress, what care is needed at home and how often your pet should be reassessed. AAHA advises that hospice be provided under veterinary guidance; it does not mean accepting unrelieved suffering.

What is suitable depends on your pet and should be discussed with the veterinary team.

Humane euthanasia

A veterinarian may discuss euthanasia to prevent further pain or suffering. Ask what the procedure involves for your pet, whether sedation is appropriate, and whether it can be done at the clinic or at home. Availability and costs vary by location and provider.

Hospice-supported natural death

For some families, hospice-supported natural death may be an option under veterinary care, with effective measures in place to relieve discomfort. Ask the veterinarian whether it is appropriate for your pet’s condition and how suffering would be prevented or addressed. It should not be confused with leaving an animal to endure unmanaged pain or distress.

How can you prepare for the veterinary appointment?

Bring written questions and ask for a plan you can revisit if your pet’s condition changes. A quality-of-life consultation can help organize the discussion; it cannot make the decision for you.

Should you choose a clinic or an at-home setting?

Neither setting is morally superior. The right choice depends on what is available locally, your pet’s condition and stress, family preferences, cost and aftercare logistics. Ask your veterinarian which settings are possible and what each would mean for your pet.

At-home visits may cost more, and availability varies, according to the RSPCA. Ask in advance about fees, who will attend, whether sedation is appropriate, what the family can expect and what arrangements can be made afterward. The RSPCA’s procedure description applies to dogs and cats: a veterinarian may suggest sedation before an injection, after which breathing and heartbeat gradually stop. The RSPCA notes that a gasp or eyes remaining open can be normal reactions. Ask your own veterinarian what to expect for your pet; the choice to stay during the procedure is personal.

What happens after a pet dies?

Your veterinary team can explain burial, cremation or other arrangements available locally. People also mark a pet’s life with letters, photo albums or journals, memorial trees, or jewelry and keepsakes. There is no fixed timetable for grief, and it is appropriate to seek support if you need it.

Grief can begin before a pet dies. In findings from its Pet Grief Survey 2025 reported on its guidance page, the RSPCA said 75% of owners experienced grief before their pet died and nearly 40% struggled with knowing when to euthanase their pet. These are RSPCA survey findings, not universal population rates.

If you would like a book to help you prepare, When It’s Time to Say Goodbye by Angela Garner and Victoria Nicholls covers pet end-of-life care, veterinary questions and bereavement. It can support preparation, but it cannot assess your pet or determine the right timing.

Sources and scope

For current guidance, see the AAHA end-of-life care guidance, updated May 19, 2026, and the RSPCA guidance on pet euthanasia and bereavement. Jane Sykes’s comments on timing and decision-making appeared in The Washington Post on July 21, 2025. This guidance is chiefly based on dogs and cats; species-specific decisions, local laws, service availability and costs require advice from a local veterinarian.
