Email recall in Outlook can feel like a safety net, but it’s not magic. The only real way to know whether your email recall worked is to confirm the recall result report and/or the recipient outcome under the conditions Outlook requires.
This 2024 guide shows you exactly how to check recall status in Outlook across platforms—Windows desktop, new Outlook, Outlook on the web, and Outlook for Mac—plus what to look for when recall fails or when you never receive a report.

What Outlook Mail Recall Actually Does (and What It Doesn’t)
When you use Message Recall in Outlook, you’re asking Exchange to replace or remove the original message in the recipient’s mailbox. This isn’t the same as deleting an email from the recipient’s device if they already downloaded or processed it.
In practical terms, recall is most likely to work when the recipient is on the same Microsoft Exchange environment and hasn’t opened the message yet.

Prerequisites: When a Recall Can Even Work
Before you try to verify recall, confirm the conditions. If these aren’t met, you may never be able to prove success—because success is unlikely.
- Both mailboxes must be Exchange (Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online or Exchange Server). Outlook recall is designed for Exchange-to-Exchange scenarios.
- The recipient must be in the same organization/tenant (typical). Cross-tenant recall is unreliable and often fails silently.
- Recipient hasn’t read the message yet. If it’s already opened, recall usually fails.
- Recipient must be using a mailbox type that supports recall. Some setups (shared/external/legacy systems) reduce reliability.
- Exchange transport must process the recall request. If the recipient mailbox is unreachable or delayed, recall may not land cleanly.
Even with all prerequisites, Outlook’s recall experience is imperfect: you may see a report that says “failed,” or you may see nothing at all.
How to Check If Your Email Recall Succeeded in Outlook (Windows)
On Windows, the most dependable approach is to look for the recall status message generated for your original send. Outlook can create a “recall succeeded/failed” response under certain settings.
Check the Recall Success/Failure Report (Most Reliable)
In Outlook for Windows, use these steps right after you initiate the recall:
- Open Outlook.
- Go to Sent Items.
- Find the original email you recalled.
- Look for an item related to the recall (it may appear as a notification message such as Message Recall Report or a recall status message).
- Open that status message to see whether Outlook reports successful recall or failed recall.
If Outlook generated a recall report, this is the clearest answer. If you see “failed,” the report typically explains why (for example: recipient read it, or recall couldn’t be completed).
Check the Message Status in Sent Items
Sometimes the recall report appears near the original message, and sometimes it’s easier to search.
- In Sent Items, use the search box.
- Search for keywords like recall, or the recipient name, or the subject line of the original email.
- Open any recall-related notification Outlook shows.
If you don’t find a recall report, don’t assume success. Lack of a report usually means recall details weren’t generated or weren’t delivered to you.

Review Message Details to Confirm What Happened
When you can open the original message item and/or the recall-related notification, you can cross-check message metadata.
- Select the original sent message or recall notification.
- Go to Message tab.
- Choose Message Details (wording may vary slightly by Outlook build).
- Look for references to recall status and processing.
This method is most helpful when the recall notification exists but you want more context on the outcome.

How to Check Recall in New Outlook for Windows (Microsoft 365)
New Outlook can behave differently from classic Outlook. The recall status report may still appear, but the UI location can vary depending on your Microsoft 365 build and whether your tenant uses Exchange Online.
- Open New Outlook on Windows.
- Go to Sent.
- Open the original email.
- Look for any recall status or follow-up notification message associated with that send.
- If you don’t see one, search your mailbox for recall and filter by Sent and Inbox around the time you recalled.
If New Outlook doesn’t show a status report, treat it as “no confirmation,” not “successful recall.” That distinction matters when you’re deciding what to tell the recipient.

OWA is often more predictable for mailbox searches when you can’t find a recall notification in Sent Items.
- Sign in to Outlook on the web (Microsoft 365).
- Open Sent Items (or Sent).
- Locate the original message you recalled.
- Search for “recall” in the search bar if you can’t locate a status message.
- Also check Inbox for recall reports that may have been delivered to you.
Recall reports may arrive as informational messages. If you find one, its wording usually indicates success or failure and sometimes the reason.
How to Check Recall in Outlook for Mac
On macOS, the biggest difference is how Outlook surfaces message status compared to Windows. Still, the recall report is the key artifact.
- Open Outlook for Mac.
- Go to Sent (or Sent Items).
- Find the original message you attempted to recall.
- Check for a recall status notification near that item.
- If you don’t see it, search your mailbox for recall and limit results to a date range around the recall.
If no recall report appears, you still can’t conclude success—use recipient confirmation instead.

If you can’t find a recall report, you can ask the recipient to check their mailbox state. This is especially useful when recall isn’t Exchange-to-Exchange or when the recipient already opened the email.
Ask them to check:
- Inbox and look for the original subject or sender
- Deleted Items (and Recover Deleted Items if their organization supports it)
- Junk/Spam (recall may not remove messages that were filtered differently)
If they never see the message again, that’s consistent with a successful recall request. If they already opened it, their mailbox may still retain it even if recall failed.
Common Reasons Recalls Fail (and the Exact Clues to Look For)
When recall fails, Outlook often generates a report stating so. If you can’t find a report, the “failure modes” below explain why your email might still be visible to the recipient.

Troubleshooting: What to Do If You Don’t See Any Recall Report
No recall report is common. It doesn’t prove success. Treat it as “unknown outcome” and verify using a combination of search, settings, and recipient confirmation.
Confirm Recall Notifications Are Enabled
Recall notifications depend on Outlook/Exchange settings and how your mailbox is configured. Check your Outlook settings for delivery notifications and message response reports.
- Open Outlook (Windows or OWA).
- Check Outlook Settings (gear icon in OWA) for notification-related preferences.
- In Windows Outlook, review message notification options under Options if your admin hasn’t locked them down.
If your company admin disabled certain messaging responses, you might never get a recall result.
Re-check the Original Message’s Sent Folder and Search for the Recall Report
Some recall result messages appear in places you don’t expect.
- Search your mailbox for the recipient name plus the approximate subject.
- Search for recall and narrow by date (use the day you recalled).
- Check both Sent Items and Inbox for informational recall messages.
If you still can’t find anything, proceed as if the outcome is uncertain.
Ask the Recipient to Check Their Inbox and Deleted Items
This is the fastest way to get truth. Keep it short and specific: ask whether they see the message in Inbox/Deleted Items, and whether they already opened it.
If they say they already opened it, you can stop trying to “confirm recall” and switch to damage control.

Recall is best-effort. When the information matters (contracts, passwords, HR issues), you need a plan that doesn’t depend on perfect Exchange conditions.
Best Value
Send a Follow-up Email Immediately
Send a new message right away that clearly states what happened and what the recipient should do. Include the original subject in the body so they can find the email quickly.
- Use a clear subject like Correction: [Original Subject]
- Request they ignore/delete the message
- If sensitive info is included, say so and offer the correct information
Use Microsoft Purview or DLP Approaches (Organization-Dependent)
Some organizations use Microsoft Purview (DLP and other controls) to protect sensitive data after accidental sharing. What you can do depends on admin policy, but it’s worth escalating if the message contains regulated content.
If You Used Attachments: Consider Replacing or Revoking Access
If the message used a cloud link (SharePoint/OneDrive), update permissions or revoke access. For file attachments, recall can’t reliably remove the downloaded file, so focus on what you can control: link access and the follow-up instructions.
FAQs: Email Recall in Outlook (2024)
Why can’t I see a recall report?
Recall reports depend on Exchange processing and client settings. If notifications are disabled, if the recipient system can’t process recall, or if permissions/policies limit recall feedback, you may not receive a result message—even when a recall was attempted.
Does Outlook recall work with Gmail, Yahoo, or other non-Microsoft email accounts?
Usually, no. Outlook recall is designed around Exchange-to-Exchange behavior. Non-Exchange recipients generally keep the original email, and you should assume it remains delivered.
If the recipient already read my email, will recall remove it?
Typically, no. Once the recipient opens the message, recall commonly fails. You’ll usually see a failure explanation if a recall report is delivered to you.
Can I recall an email after hours have passed?
You can attempt recall, but success drops sharply as time passes. Delayed reading, syncing, and inbox rules all reduce your odds. If you need certainty, use a follow-up message right away.
How do I know the recipient definitely didn’t receive it?
You can’t fully guarantee delivery outcome from the sender side. The closest proof is a successful recall report plus recipient confirmation (or the recipient confirming they never saw the message).
Bottom Line
To know if your email was recalled in Outlook in 2024, your first move is checking for the recall status/report tied to the original sent message. If you don’t see a recall report, treat the result as unknown and confirm with the recipient.
In parallel, don’t rely on recall for time-sensitive corrections—send a follow-up immediately with clear deletion/ignore instructions and, if applicable, revoke access to any linked resources.
