You can change to a face already saved in your Pixel Watch collection from the watch or the Pixel Watch phone app. For a face you do not have, install a watch-compatible listing through Google Play, then apply and edit it. The exact choices depend on the face and on the Wear OS software supported by your watch.
The key distinction is between selecting and installing. Collection faces are ready to use; a face missing from the collection must be obtained as a compatible Wear OS app. Checking that distinction first prevents you from repeatedly trying to install a face that is already available—or trying to apply a phone-only app as a watch face.

How do I find and install new watch faces on my Pixel Watch?
There are three starting points, and choosing the right one prevents most confusion:

First decide whether the face is already in your collection
If you can see the face when you swipe through the watch-face carousel, it is already available and you only need to apply it. The same applies to faces shown under Watch faces in the Pixel Watch app: selecting one and choosing Use on watch applies the saved face without a separate Play Store download.
If you cannot find it in either place, treat it as a new installation. Search Google Play for the face, open its listing, and confirm that it supports Wear OS and offers your watch as an installation target. Do not assume that an app installed on your phone includes a watch face; Google specifically notes that an app can lack a watch-install option when it is not compatible with Wear OS.
Before you start: identify the route you need
Use the watch or the Pixel Watch app when your goal is simply to change the current design. Those screens show the collection associated with your watch, so the operation is selection rather than downloading. Use Google Play when the design is absent from both collections, because only the Play listing can add a new compatible face.
A face may be visible in a store search but still unavailable to your particular watch. The important evidence is the listing’s watch-install option or device selector, not just the fact that the app has a phone version. If the Pixel Watch is not offered as a target, stop there and choose another listing rather than installing the phone component and expecting a new watch face to appear.
Keep the distinction in mind after installation too. Play Store installation adds the face to the watch; the carousel or Use on watch command then makes it active. Installing and applying are two separate actions.
Browse and apply faces directly on the Pixel Watch
Switch to a face already available
- Wake the Pixel Watch and display the current face.
- Touch and hold the current watch face until the face selector appears.
- Swipe left or right through the available faces.
- Tap the face you want. It becomes the active face.
This route is the quickest way to switch between faces you have already saved. It does not search the full Play Store catalog; a face absent from the carousel must be installed separately.

Edit before applying, when the option appears
Some faces show an Edit control in the selector. Tap Edit before finishing the change, then move through the face’s available settings. Depending on that design, you may be able to choose colors, visual styles, or complication layouts. When you finish, return to the selector and tap the face to apply it.

Not every face exposes the same controls. The editor only shows settings supplied by that face, so a missing color or layout is normally a design limitation rather than a watch failure.
Apply a saved face from the Pixel Watch app
Use the collection on your phone
- Open the Pixel Watch app on the paired phone.
- Tap Watch faces.
- Swipe through the faces shown in your collection.
- Tap the face you want to use.
- Tap Use on watch.
The selected face is sent to the watch and becomes active. If the face offers settings, choose Edit before Use on watch and adjust the available options first. The app and watch may display different controls because each face defines its own editable properties.
When the phone route is useful
- It is easier to inspect several saved faces on a larger screen.
- You can set a face’s style or complication choices before sending it to the watch.
- It confirms whether a face is already in your collection before you spend time searching Play Store.
If the app does not show the watch or does not complete the change, check the connection between the app and watch, then update the relevant software. Google says keeping apps and watch software current can resolve app errors.
Install a new third-party face from Google Play
A third-party face is software, not a physical accessory. Use an official Google Play route and read the listing’s device support before installing.

- Open Play Store on the Pixel Watch.
- Browse or search for a watch face.
- Select the face’s listing to view its details.
- Tap Install.
After installation finishes, return to the watch-face selector: touch and hold the current face, swipe through the collection, and tap the new face. If the listing installs an app but the face does not appear, reopen the listing and verify that it includes a Wear OS watch component rather than only a phone app.

Install from Google Play on the phone
- Open the Google Play Store on your phone.
- Browse the Watch faces category or search for the face by name.
- Open the listing.
- Choose the watch installation option when it is shown, then install it to the Pixel Watch.
Google’s Pixel Watch app installation guidance and its Wear OS instructions both describe Play-based installation. The exact button placement can vary with the listing and Play Store version, but the deciding detail is whether the Pixel Watch is offered as a supported device.
Install from the web Play Store
- Open the face’s page in the Google Play Store website.
- Sign in with the Google account associated with your devices, if prompted.
- Choose the Wear OS watch as the target device when the site presents a device selector.
- Confirm the installation.
If no watch appears as an eligible target, the listing may not support your Pixel Watch. Google advises checking for a watch-install option; an app that offers only phone installation is probably not compatible with Wear OS. How the three installation routes differ

All three routes lead to the same compatibility question. The route does not make an incompatible face work; it only changes where you begin the installation. If the listing does not expose a watch target in any route, the absence is meaningful.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting
Pixel Watch models do not accept every historical Wear OS face. Google explains that some older faces can no longer be downloaded or updated on newer watches because they are not compatible with the newer Wear OS software. This can look like a failed installation even when the Play Store is working normally.
- Open the face’s Play Store listing and look for a Wear OS or watch installation option.
- Check whether your Pixel Watch is listed among supported devices or appears as an install target.
- Read any compatibility message before trying to install again.
- If an older face is unavailable, use Google’s current collection in Play Store instead of attempting an unofficial download.

Compatibility is a property of the face’s listing and the watch’s Wear OS version; a face working on one Wear OS watch is not proof that it will work on another.
Customize the face after it is installed
Edit on the watch
- Touch and hold the active face.
- Tap Edit when it is available.
- Swipe through the editor’s style, color, and complication pages.
- Choose the settings you want and finish the edit.
Edit in the Pixel Watch app
- Open the Pixel Watch app and tap Watch faces.
- Select the active or saved face.
- Tap Edit.
- Adjust the controls exposed by that face, then use it on the watch.
Understand complications
A complication is a small information area on a watch face. It can show data such as weather or step count, but the choices are not universal. The face determines how many complication slots exist, where they are placed, and which data sources can fill them. The watch and installed apps also determine which information is available.

For example, one face may offer a top slot for weather and two lower slots for activity data, while another may have no editable slots at all. If a preferred data type is absent from the editor, select a different face with a compatible slot rather than expecting every design to support every complication. What to do when a face is missing
The face is not in the carousel
First determine whether it was actually installed to the watch. A phone-only installation will not add a watch face. Reopen the Play listing and look for the watch installation target. If the listing supports the watch, install it from the watch’s Play Store or select the Pixel Watch as the target from the phone or web Play Store, then reopen the face selector.
The Play Store says the face is unavailable
Check compatibility before repeating the download. An older face may have been removed from installation or updating on newer Wear OS watches. Use a currently supported face from Google Play when the listing does not offer your watch.
Installation stops or the app reports an error
- Confirm that the watch and phone are using current software and that the Pixel Watch app and Play Store are updated.
- Close and reopen the Play Store or Pixel Watch app, then retry the installation from the same official listing.
- Check the listing again for a watch target; selecting only the phone can install the wrong component.
- If the face remains unavailable, treat the compatibility notice as decisive rather than trying an unofficial package.
Google’s Pixel Watch help recommends updates as a way to address app errors. The official installation guidance does not require sideloading, and downloading a face from an unrelated third-party site bypasses the compatibility and update checks shown by Google Play.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching the carousel for a face you have never installed: the carousel shows your available collection, not the entire Play Store catalog.
- Assuming a phone app includes a watch face: only a listing with a compatible Wear OS component can add a face to the watch.
- Ignoring the device selector: on a phone or web browser, explicitly choose the Pixel Watch when Google Play offers a target-device choice.
- Repeating an incompatible download: a warning about an older face and newer Wear OS software is a compatibility limitation, not necessarily a temporary store error.
- Expecting every face to offer the same editor: colors, styles, and complication slots are defined by each face.
- Using an unofficial download to bypass the store: the supported installation path is Google Play, where the watch target and compatibility information are shown.
Switch back to another face later
Once a face is in the collection, you do not need to reinstall it each time. Touch and hold the current face, swipe to the saved face, and tap it. You can also open the Pixel Watch app, tap Watch faces, select the saved design, and tap Use on watch. Edit it first if you want to change its supported style or complication choices.

A practical decision path
- See it in the watch carousel? Touch and hold the current face, swipe to it, and tap it.
- See it in the Pixel Watch app but not active? Open Watch faces, select it, and tap Use on watch.
- Cannot find it in either collection? Search Google Play for the face and inspect the watch-support information.
- The listing offers the Pixel Watch as a target? Install it, then select it from the face carousel.
- No watch target or a compatibility warning? Choose another Wear OS-compatible face; the missing target indicates that this listing is not available for your watch.
This sequence separates a simple selection problem from an installation and compatibility problem, so you know whether to use the face editor, Play Store, or a different listing.
