In Teams for desktop, select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), open Settings > Devices, find Noise suppression, and switch it off. During a meeting or call, use More actions > Audio settings or the arrow beside the microphone, choose More audio settings, and disable the same toggle. Microsoft says the selected setting carries over to your next meeting or call.
What turning off noise suppression changes
Noise suppression is Teams’ microphone-processing control. When it is enabled, Teams attempts to reduce sounds such as fans, keyboards and other background noise before sending your microphone signal to other participants. Switching it off stops that particular filtering step, so the microphone can transmit a more complete version of what it hears.

That is useful when you are using a high-fidelity microphone in a quiet studio or another low-noise room. Microsoft specifically recommends disabling noise suppression for high-fidelity microphones in a quiet environment. The trade-off is that every sound reaching the microphone can become more audible, including room reverberation, chair movement, HVAC noise and people speaking nearby.
The control is separate from your operating system’s microphone mute button, microphone permissions and the input-device selector. Turning noise suppression off does not unmute you, change the selected microphone or grant Teams permission to use the microphone.

Turn it off from Teams desktop settings
- Open Microsoft Teams on your computer.
- Select Settings and more, the ellipsis (…) near your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Open Devices.
- Locate Noise suppression.
- Switch the toggle to Off.
Teams normally enables noise suppression by default. Microsoft says the choice you make here carries over to the next meeting or call, so you do not normally need to change it every time you join. If the label or location is different in your client, use the Teams settings search box for “noise suppression” and open the matching audio or device setting.
Check the selected microphone at the same time
The Devices page also contains the microphone and speaker controls. Confirm that Teams is using the microphone you intend to test before judging the result. A high-end external microphone can sound unchanged if Teams is still using a laptop’s built-in microphone, a dock microphone or a headset input.
Disable it while a meeting or call is in progress
You can change the setting without leaving the meeting. Meeting audio changes take effect immediately, which is useful when you need to demonstrate a full-range microphone, capture room sound or troubleshoot an unexpectedly processed voice.

- [Clear Output Voice] Cardioid condenser microphone for PC captures your voice properly, producing clear smooth and crisp sound. Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
After changing it, speak or make a controlled test sound while another participant listens. Do not test by creating a loud noise close to the microphone; a normal speaking voice and a quiet room reveal whether the processing has changed without risking feedback or hearing discomfort.
When Voice isolation is active
Voice isolation is related to noise suppression but is not the same mode. It uses a voice profile to identify the enrolled user’s voice and filters out background noise as well as other speakers. That can be helpful in a shared room, but it is unsuitable when the meeting needs to transmit nearby voices, instruments or a broader room mix.
Switch away from Voice isolation in a meeting
- Open the microphone dropdown in the meeting controls.
- If Voice isolation is selected, choose Background noise only when you want ordinary background filtering without isolating only the enrolled speaker.
- Alternatively, open the available audio controls and turn the Noise suppression toggle off when you want Teams to stop that processing.
Background noise only keeps background-noise filtering while avoiding Voice isolation’s speaker-specific behavior. Noise suppression off goes further by disabling that filtering control. Choose between them based on whether you need a natural room signal or simply want other people’s voices to remain audible.
Voice profiles and missing Recognition controls
Voice isolation can require a voice profile so Teams knows which voice to preserve. Microsoft describes creating that profile as taking about 30 seconds; that is an approximate recording time, not a guarantee for the entire setup process. If the Recognition option is missing from your settings, Microsoft advises contacting your organization’s IT administrator. The absence may reflect an administrative restriction rather than a microphone fault.

Desktop, web and mobile differences
The exact desktop path is the most consistently documented way to turn the control off. Teams supports audio settings on mobile, but the mobile interface does not necessarily expose the same choices as the desktop client.
iPhone and iPad
Microsoft’s mobile guidance lists Auto, Low and High noise-suppression choices on iOS. That documentation does not specify an Off choice on the mobile screen, so do not assume that the desktop toggle appears on every iPhone or iPad version. If you need unprocessed microphone audio and cannot find Off, make the change in Teams desktop or ask your organization whether mobile audio policies limit the available modes.
Android and changing client versions
Menu names and availability can change with Teams client versions, account type and organizational policy. On any platform, start with the in-app settings search for “noise suppression.” If the search returns no control, check whether you are signed into the expected work or school account and whether your organization manages meeting audio centrally.

Noise suppression versus High fidelity music mode
High fidelity music mode is a separate Teams control intended for sharing music, not ordinary speech. It is not simply another name for the general Noise suppression toggle. Microsoft says the mode can turn off noise suppression and other audio effects while it is active.

When network bandwidth allows, Microsoft documents a 32 kHz sampling rate at 128 kbps. In lower-bandwidth situations, the bitrate can fall to 48 kbps. Those figures describe Teams’ music-sharing mode under the stated network conditions; they are not a promise that every call will use those values.
Microsoft says High fidelity music mode is unavailable in live events and when Spatial audio is enabled. It also recommends the mode for music rather than speech. For a normal conversation, leave the music mode off and use the ordinary Noise suppression setting that matches your room and microphone. For a piano, guitar, playback track or other musical source, use the dedicated music control when it is available and confirm that participants hear the intended signal.
Choose the right audio option
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Noise suppression off | Stops that Teams filtering control from reducing microphone audio. | You need the microphone’s fullest sound in a quiet room or with a high-fidelity microphone. |
| Background noise only | Keeps background-noise filtering without restricting the signal to the enrolled user’s voice. | Voice isolation is active but nearby speakers or room sound must remain audible. |
| Voice isolation | Uses a voice profile to retain the enrolled user’s voice and filter background noise and other speakers. | You are in a shared or noisy space and only one enrolled speaker should be heard. |
| High fidelity music mode | Optimizes Teams audio for shared music and may disable noise suppression and other effects. | You are transmitting music rather than conducting an ordinary speech call. |
If the toggle is missing, unavailable or keeps reverting
Meeting or administrator policy
Some audio settings can be unavailable because of meeting-organizer settings or IT-administrator policies. A locked, greyed-out or absent control therefore does not necessarily indicate a problem with your microphone. If the option is missing in both the meeting controls and Settings > Devices, contact your organization’s Teams administrator and ask whether noise-suppression, Voice isolation or recognition features are restricted.

Teams can present different controls for personal, work and school accounts, and the web, desktop and mobile clients are not identical. Verify the account shown in your profile menu, then check the desktop client’s Settings > Devices page. Updating Teams may change labels or expose a newer control, but the setting still depends on what your organization allows.

The sound still seems filtered
First verify that the intended microphone is selected. Then test with a second participant and compare a normal speaking sample with and without the setting. Other processing can affect the result, including Voice isolation, High fidelity music mode, headset firmware, an audio interface’s own noise gate or a virtual microphone supplied by another application. Teams’ Noise suppression toggle only controls Teams’ processing; it cannot disable filtering performed before the signal reaches Teams.
The change did not persist
Reopen Settings > Devices after the call and check the toggle. If it has returned to its previous state, the account may be receiving a managed policy or the client may be applying a meeting-specific configuration. Record the client type, account and meeting context and give those details to your administrator rather than repeatedly changing the same control.
Practical setup for a natural microphone sound
- Use a quiet room before disabling filtering. With suppression off, the microphone will transmit more of the room.
- Place the microphone close enough for a clear voice but not directly in the path of breath or plosive sounds.
- Use headphones when possible to prevent speaker output from re-entering the microphone.
- Ask another participant to listen after each major change; local monitoring may not reproduce the audio that Teams sends.
- For music, distinguish the dedicated High fidelity music mode from the general Noise suppression control.
A high-fidelity microphone is optional; you do not need to buy new hardware to change the Teams setting. The benefit of disabling suppression is greatest when the existing microphone already captures a clean signal and the room is quiet.
