Do not delete random folders—especially anything in WinSxS—or assume that freeing storage alone will solve every performance problem.
What “cleaning up your PC” can mean
People usually mean one of four different jobs: freeing storage, removing temporary or unwanted files, uninstalling software, or fixing a computer that feels slow. These problems overlap, but they need different responses. A nearly full system drive can interfere with updates and reduce performance. Unused applications and large personal files consume space without being “junk.” Malware can use processor and disk resources. Startup programs, outdated software and aging hardware can also cause sluggishness even after a successful cleanup.

Start by identifying which condition you have. If Windows shows a low-storage warning, begin with storage tools. If you see unfamiliar processes, unexplained disk activity or browser changes, run a security scan. If plenty of space is available but the PC is still slow, investigate startup apps, updates, malware and hardware rather than repeatedly deleting temporary files.

Windows can show where your system drive space is going. On Windows 11 and Windows 10, open Settings > System > Storage. Let the categories finish calculating, then inspect the system drive (normally C:). You may see installed apps, temporary files, documents, pictures, videos, cloud files and other categories.

This first view prevents a common mistake: deleting a few small caches while a large game library, video folder or previous Windows installation is consuming most of the drive. Record which categories are large and work from the largest, safest targets.
Use Cleanup recommendations as a review list
Select Cleanup recommendations in Storage settings. Windows can surface four useful groups:
- Temporary files: disposable system and application data that Windows has identified as removable.
- Large or unused files: files that may be taking substantial space but require your judgment before deletion.
- Files synced to the cloud: locally stored copies that may be eligible for cloud-only storage, depending on your configured service.
- Unused apps: installed programs Windows believes you may no longer use.
Open each category and read the names, locations and sizes. Select only items you recognize, then choose Clean up. Treat personal media, downloads, project files, game saves and cloud-synced material as review items, not automatic junk. If a file matters, copy it to another drive or archive before removing it.

Storage Sense is Windows’ automatic maintenance feature. Microsoft describes it as a way to free drive space by removing unnecessary temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. It operates on the Windows system drive, normally C:, and does not automatically manage your Downloads folder or cloud files unless you configure those locations.

Turn Storage Sense on and choose its behavior
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Storage Sense.
- Turn on Automatic User Content Cleanup (the exact wording can vary slightly by Windows release).
- Choose when Windows should run it and review the options for temporary files, the Recycle Bin and cloud content.
- Leave Downloads and cloud-file deletion disabled unless you understand exactly which files will be affected.
Storage Sense is useful for routine maintenance because it can run on a schedule. It is not a substitute for reviewing large personal files or uninstalling applications, and it cannot diagnose a hardware fault.
3. Run Disk Cleanup for selectable system files
The classic Disk Cleanup utility remains useful when you want to inspect individual categories manually. Search for Disk Cleanup from the Windows taskbar, open it, choose the system drive and wait for the calculation.
The list can include temporary files, Internet files, thumbnails and other system categories. Select a category to read its description before checking the box. If you need additional system categories, choose Clean up system files, select the drive again and review the expanded list.
Items that deserve extra caution
- Downloads: may contain installers, tax files, work documents or other material you still need.
- Previous Windows installations: removing them can eliminate the ability to roll back to an earlier installation.
- Cloud-synced files: deleting a local copy may affect what is available offline, depending on the synchronization settings.
- Recycle Bin: emptying it removes the normal recovery path for those files.
- Thumbnails and temporary Internet files: generally rebuildable, but the first folder view or browser session afterward may take longer while caches are recreated.
When uncertain, leave the category unchecked and investigate its contents through File Explorer or Microsoft’s documentation before proceeding.

4. Find and handle large personal files
Large files are often the fastest way to reclaim meaningful space, but they are also the easiest to delete accidentally. In File Explorer, inspect Downloads, Videos, Pictures, desktop folders and game-library locations. Switch to a details view and sort by Size.
Archive instead of deleting when possible
- Move completed videos, photos and installers to an external drive or another trusted storage location.
- Keep at least one additional copy of irreplaceable documents and photos before deleting the original.
- For games, use the game client’s uninstall or library-management controls so saves and installation records are handled correctly.
- Do not remove files from folders whose purpose you cannot identify merely because they are large.
After moving files, empty the Recycle Bin only when you are certain the originals are no longer needed. Recheck Settings > System > Storage to confirm that the expected amount of space was released.
5. Uninstall applications deliberately
Unused applications can occupy substantial storage and may add background services or startup entries. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), sort the list by size or installation date.
- Identify a program by its publisher and purpose.
- Close the program and any documents it has open.
- Select the three-dot menu or the program entry, choose Uninstall, and follow the application’s removal wizard.
- Restart if the uninstaller requests it.
- Return to the app list and confirm that the entry is gone.
Keep device drivers, security software and components whose purpose is unclear until you verify them. Removing a driver or shared component can disable hardware or another application. If a program is unfamiliar, search its publisher and installed location before deciding; do not use the name alone as proof that it is unwanted.

6. Scan for malware when performance or activity is unexplained
Microsoft notes that malware can consume CPU and disk resources and reduce performance. If resource usage remains high after ordinary storage cleanup, or you notice unfamiliar programs, browser redirects, disabled security settings or unexplained network activity, use Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Quick scan for an initial check. If symptoms persist or you need a broader examination, open Scan options and choose a fuller scan.
- Apply the recommended action for anything detected, then restart if requested.
Keep Windows and your security definitions updated. Do not install several real-time antivirus products at once; they can conflict and consume additional resources. A storage cleanup does not remove malware, and a malware scan does not recover deleted personal files.

The WinSxS directory is Windows’ component store. Its size in File Explorer can look alarming because it includes hard-linked components and files needed for servicing. Microsoft documents supported component-store cleanup methods for removing outdated Windows Update components.

Why your PC may still be slow after cleanup
Freeing space helps when low storage is the bottleneck, but it does not guarantee a noticeable speed change. Microsoft also identifies startup apps, outdated software, malware and hardware limitations as common causes of poor performance.
Check startup programs
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Startup apps. Sort by startup impact and disable only programs you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. Leave security tools, hardware utilities and software required for work enabled unless you have verified their function. Disabling an entry prevents automatic launch; it does not uninstall the program.
Install Windows and application updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates and restart when required. Update applications through their own supported channels. Outdated software can contain bugs or compatibility problems that look like general slowness.

Use Task Manager to identify the bottleneck
In Task Manager > Processes, inspect CPU, Memory and Disk columns while the computer is slow. A process that repeatedly consumes a resource gives you a direction for troubleshooting. Search the exact process name and publisher before ending it. Ending a system process without understanding it can cause instability; restarting is safer than repeatedly killing unknown tasks.
Consider hardware limits
If storage remains healthy, malware scans are clean and startup apps are controlled, the limitation may be memory, an older processor, a failing drive or another hardware issue. Back up important data before hardware diagnostics. Persistent disk errors, crashes or unusual noises warrant professional service rather than more file deletion.
